MATH MINI TASK

By Therese Barimbao
- is a sequence or series of numbers where each
Geometric term after the first is found by multiplying the
sequence previous term by a constant factor. This constant
factor is called the common ratio, and it is the
same for all terms in the sequence.

WORD PROBLEM NO.1

Suppose a glass of water contains 100
bacteria at time zero. Every hour, the
number of bacteria doubles. How many EXAMPLES:
bacteria will be there in the glass after a.) 2, 6, 18, 54, 162, ...
1 hour, b.) 2 hours, and c.) 3 hours? This is a geometric sequence with a first

a.) 2 years, b.) 4 years and c.) 6 years? term of -1 and a common ratio of -2.
Each term in the sequence is obtained
by multiplying the previous term by -2.

FUN FACTS
A geometric sequence can have both
positive and negative terms, depending
on the values of a and r. Steps:
If the common ratio of a geometric
sequence is between 0 and 1, the terms -1 x (-2) = 2
of the sequence will decay exponentially. -2 x (-2) = 4
The geometric mean of two positive 4 x (-2) = -8
numbers a and b is the square root of -8 x (-2) = 16
their product, i.e. (ab)^(1/2).
To find the next term of the
Geometric sequences have a wide range
sequence, we can use the formula:

including finance, physics, and an = a1 x r
engineering.
They are often used in financial
planning and compound interest
calculations, where a constant growth
rate is involved.

WORD PROBLEM NO.1

A company produces 5,000 boxes of
chocolates annually, and the demand for
their product grows by 15% every year. EXAMPLES:
How many boxes will the company produce
in the next 3 years? 2 + 6 + 18 + 54 + 162 ...
WORD PROBLEM NO.2 S3 = 2 + 6 + 18 = 26
A company offers its employees a year-end The sum of the first 3 terms of the
bonus program. In the first year, an geometric sequence 2,6,8,54,162 is 26.
employee receives a bonus of P30,000. For 1 + -2 + 4 + -8 + 16 ...
each subsequent year, the bonus amount
decreases by 10%. How much bonus will an S5 = 1 + -2 + 4 + -8 + 16 = 11
employee receive in the sixth year? The sum of the all the terms of the
geometric sequence 1, -2, 4, -8, 16, is 11.

FUN FACTS
The sum of an infinite geometric series
can only be found when the absolute Steps:
value of the common ratio is less than 1. By using the geometric series formula,
If the absolute value of the common ratio we can calculate faster.
is greater than or equal to 1, the series 2,6,8
diverges and the sum cannot be found. Let's first get the common ratio.
a2
The limit of the ratio of consecutive r = a1 = 6 = 3
terms in a geometric series as the 2
number of terms approaches infinity is Sn = a1 (r n - 1) S3 = 52
the common ratio.
r-1 2
S3 = 2 (3 3 - 1) S3 = 26
A geometric series can be used to model
3-1
various real-world scenarios, such as the
S3 = 2 (27 - 1)
growth of populations, the depreciation 3-1
of assets, and the compounding of S3 = 2 (26)
interest. 3-1
S3 = 52

Q1. Which is your favorite topic in the
second quarter?
SUMMARY My favorite topic in the second quarter is the
geometric sequence and series. Because I
Formulas: always had fun solving it.
Common Ratio:
a2 Q2. Which topic did you find difficult and
r = a1
you struggle in the second quarter?
Geometric Sequence: The long division. I always get confused
n-1
an = a1 (r) because of the signs.
Geometric Series:
Sn = a1 (rn - 1) Q3. How did you manage to cope up with the
topic?
I went back to the subtraction rules and used
them to solve the problem. I worked hard to
increase my attention span and focus.

Q4. What skills have you observed to develop in the journey of MATH 10? Did you become
better in problem solving and critical thinking or otherwise. Please share your journey.
Yes. I got more efficient at problem solving and organized my thoughts. Instead of impulsively
solving the problems, I'm now starting to focus in understanding the concept before
attempting to solve the problem. I improved my problem solving skills because I did self-
evaluation. I took time to evaluate how I did it. What I did wrong and what I did right and I did
well the next time. I've also learned to ask for help, so that I could get a difference perspectie
or insight into how to solve the problem.

Q5. As we go along the 3rd and 4th quarter, what are your expectations? Do you have any
suggestions to make our lesson more fun and productive? Your insights will be very helpful to
our encounter.

I'm looking forward for more games about the certain topic. Real-life examples might also
help us to see the practical applications of math and make it more relevant to our lives. I've
also observed that frequent feedback on the student's progress might encourage and help us
to reflect on what we're learning.
