INTRODUCTION

Waste can be solid, liquid, or gas and each type has different methods of

disposal and management. Solid waste management is a term that used to refer to

the solid waste. Solid wastes management (SWM) are to control, collect,  process,

utilize and dispose of solid wastes in an economical way consistent with  the public

health protection. Solid waste management may be defined as the discipline

associated with the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer, processing

and disposal of solid waste. Waste management deals with all types of waste,

including industrial, biological and household. In some cases, waste can pose a

threat to human health. Waste is produced by human activity, for example, the

extraction and processing raw materials. Waste management is intended to reduce

adverse effects of waste on human health, the environment or aesthetics.  Waste

management or Waste Disposal are the activities and actions required to manage

waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes the collection, transport,

treatment and disposal of waste, together with monitoring and regulation of the

waste management process. Proper waste disposal and management can be done by

applying the 3R- reduce, reuse and recycle. Reducing means lessening the amount of

trash/garbage produced. Reusing refers to using materials more than once while

recycling means creating new material or product out of trash/garbage. Waste

management practices are very important to maintain the cleanliness of the

community the household practices will reflect in the whole community. Right

practices should be carry out properly in order to maintain the cleanliness of a certain

community. Managing garbage can lessen the dirt in the community and it will also

help every community to avoid bacteria spreading from  dirt. Also, to know their

practices is knowing what should be improve in managing the waste like the

segregation of the garbage and how they dispose their garbage.  The most important

reason for proper waste management is to protect the environment and for the

health and safety of the population and Reduce the volume of the solid waste stream

through the implementation of waste reduction and recycling. To transform our

community from burying waste to utilizing waste as a resource. Through solid waste

management we can manage as a resource promoting, sustainable environmentally

and effective practices through an integrated system. Waste Management and

recycling can eliminate and minimize the intensity pollution in our community. This

case study can help our surroundings in this activity. Our economic status can help

maintain a disposal of waste or proper  waste management about segregation the

Non-Biodegradable and Biodegradable  in the community even the outside of the

community, learning this case study is  not only for learning proper segregation but

to discipline our self in proper disposal  of garbage. Being a student, we are going to

apply this activity to our self to manufacture the great variety or material that we use

in our homes, community and etc. Also, this research presents efforts on

environmental academic responsibility that will present examples of environmental

practices. The findings of all this study will commit to environmental responsibility of

every household in barangay San Miguel, San Juan and San Francisco. In regard of

this, our study entitled “The Solid Waste Management Practices of the Top Three

Model Barangay in Iriga, City aims to know how the community manage their waste

as well as to identify the materials they are using managing their waste.

Furthermore, this study is not just a study but it also helps the community through

conducting clean-up drive in the said place. This can help maintain a safe, cleaner

and more attractive environment. Proper Waste management is also one way of

reducing the possibility of contaminating groundwater and soil. There are many

benefits of waste management. One of the most popular and Natural processes of

waste management is composting. In this method, plant and other organic waste

are being broken down to produce materials rich in nutrients. This is something

anyone can do at home. Wastes like vegetables and fruit scraps, leaves and grass

clippings can be placed in a bin and eventually, they will decompose, producing a

mixture that can be used to improve soil in the garden. Recycling is one of the best

way to manage waste. This helps reduce pollution, conserve energy and save

natural resources. Recycling materials like glass, plastics, aluminum and paper won’t

only keep the environment clean, but is also a way to save money. While existing

waste disposal facilities are inadequate to deal with the quality and quantity of

waste generated, more sophisticated systems are expensive and their

maintenance requirements are high.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

6. What are the actions made by the barangay officials to make their residents

follow the rules?

With the questions at hand, the researchers formulated the

following assumptions: 1. The researchers assume that the top three model

barangays are implementing segregation of waste. That the biodegradable will

be separated to the non-biodegradable waste (households waste). 2.

The researchers assume that the barangay officials are making ways to

implement the rules regarding the solid waste management like seminars so that

their constituents will be notify about the rules that they are implementing. 3.

The researchers assume that the top three model barangay is implementing

the ordinance well to the residents of their barangay and also they are making an

action that will encourage their constituents like programs connected to the  solid

waste management.
