Rationale

The issue of proper waste disposal has been a big precise problem not only in our

environment but in the world. The researchers chose this sort of research theme since they accept

that this point can change the cycle of our condition, which is to keep our environment clean. In

fact, in Silliman University, "Let's bring some changes in the way we dispose of our plastics and

other wastes properly in our campus" (Tilos, J. C. 2018). According to (Leslie, K. 2019) "Thus,

improperly disposing of wastes cause some harmful effects especially to our health and gives us

environmental problems." "Solid wastes are any rubbish or refuse generated from undesirable or

useless materials or substances," said (Desa, K. & Yusooff, 2011). Improper management of the

disposal of waste is one of the leading causes of environmental degradation. It is also the main

problem of most establishments, and the researchers want to know how far the school will take

responsibility. The researchers are also concerned with our public sanitary landfill, which our

waste will segregate. Secondly, researchers want to know the scraps from our school that's in a

particular position in dumpsites are separated or not. The improper waste disposal here in the

Philippines remains a significant challenge for us. It is getting bigger every year, especially in

urban areas like Metro Manila.

The people don't give importance to it. Lastly, This can lead us to health problems and

environmental problems. The LGU's(Local Government Units) should be responsible for the

waste and disposal of trashes. They should focus more on more deprived areas wherein the

canals are clogged, where rivers are full of trashes and other places which can harm the

environment. (Philippine Solid Wastes At A Glance). The researchers conclude that this topic

needs to be given importance to our environment. Keeping our environment clean avoids us from
getting health hazards. In this study we are planning to conduct a survey in Silliman University

to gather data’s and information from each department. And to further know the extent of proper

waste disposal in Silliman University.

Statement of the problem

Proper waste disposal is one of the main problems in all establishments. Proper waste

disposal is a huge responsibility to handle, especially in prominent Universities. Neglecting this

aspect of having the knowledge of how far will the University take the guilt leads to unorganized

and non-improvement of waste disposal.

Silliman University should know their ways on disposing and segregating waste. The

University should be aware and know the results of their implementations inside the campus.

This study aims to answer these four questions bellow.

1. What plans does Silliman University undertake to strengthen its proper waste disposal?

2. To what extent has the appropriate waste disposal been operational in Silliman University?

3. What challenges does Silliman University meet in the proper waste disposal?

4. What probable prospects does Silliman University meet inappropriate waste disposal?
Significance of the study

This examination was intended to decide the point of view of students and different

individuals from Silliman College. Concerning Legitimate waste transfer and distinguish the

ways on how the foundation keep up and pursue a legitimate waste transfer, the yield of this

investigation on the degree of fitting waste administration will profit the

Students. The student is the primary factor of appropriate waste transfer. The students

benefit from this examination. This investigation will assist understudies with concentrating on

this issue and how to improve the procedure of legitimate waste transfer.

The People of Dumaguete City. The people of Dumaguete City will also benefit from this

study, This study will help students to concentrate on this problem and how to help to improve

rhe process of proper waste disposal.

The Future Researchers. This study will help future researchers who are interested in the

same topic gather references and information.

Attitudes of Students towards waste management

Keeping our environment that we live in is very important as it dramatically affects our

lives. Waste is located anywhere in the world, and there organizations that are doing their best to

make people know about environmental protection. Improper waste management is one of the

leading causes of environmental degradation. Though there is no permanent solution to this

problem, we can still reduce and control this is by giving knowledge to people who know little
about proper waste disposal. Collection, transportation, and destruction are the three necessary

components of managing waste (Licy. C. D, 2013)

Proper waste segregation

In places, you go there will always be some waste management, from offices to your house

and even the streets. It is fundamental to put your loss in the correct canister so, the isolation of

the squanders would be familiar and wouldn't mix with the other waste. To make it easier to

recycle waste segregation is included in the law for people to know about proper waste

management. Waste segregation is cheaper because it doesn't need manual or mechanical sorting

as mixed waste (N.A, 2016)

Waste management solutions importance

The study of improper waste disposal has big relativity in our daily lives ass, we know. We

need to learn how to keep and manage our waste properly to prevent further damaging the

ecosystem around us since we produce most of the trash around the world. Improper waste

disposal affects our environment. Not disposing of the waste properly causes unwanted diseases

and also affects our environment (Blogger. G, 2014)

Human population

The human population is continuously increasing, and global problems regarding improper

waste disposal are continuing because of the rapid industrialization (Atienza, 2008). The
ineffective waste collection strategies and the lack of disposal sites are the major flaws about the

concern of waste management (Reyes et al., 2013)

Kojima & Michida ed.

Components of managing waste

Keeping the environment that we live in clean is very important as it dramatically affects

our lives. Waste is located anywhere in the world, and some organizations are doing their best to

make people know about environmental protection. Improper waste management is one of the

leading causes of environmental degradation. Though there is no permanent solution to this

components of managing waste (Licy. C. D, 2013)

Improvement in waste management

Solid waste and it’s management are the critical areas of environment and health concern that

the cities are currently facing. The rapidly swelling population, increasing urbanization, and

intensifying economic activities have all contributed to the generation of wastes. Municipalities

are increasingly overburdened and unable to cope with the ever-increasing magnitude of urban

wastes. Waste management costs are escalating, and this trend is putting more and more pressure

on municipalities' budgets. Trash is an unwanted and useless by-product of our daily

consumption, affluence, and comfort. We produce waste daily, but we are not aware of managing

it properly, put the burden on nature's assimilating capacity. The industries are polluting through

bodies of water; the liquid wastes are discharging into the river; solid waste finds its way into
city streets and low lands. The picture is very disappointing and dismal. When waste disposed of

inland, it causes land pollution; when burnt, causes air pollution; and when dumped in landfills,

causes surface and groundwater pollution. Besides, it has an aesthetic and health implication.

The municipalities spend 20-40 percent of their municipal revenues, employing 1-2 workers per

1000 person on solid waste management. The modern practice of waste handling and

transportation permits only about half of the wastes to be collected and disposed of. The rest are

left on the streets or find the way into drains or low-lying areas, causing pollution of water

resources, waterlogging and proliferation of flies, mosquitoes, and rats (Yousuf.T 2001)

Adequate waste disposal segregation is the key

For us to promote effective management of waste, we must interact with an activity like

proper segregation, to make it easier to dispose of garbage without mixing it to other debris.

Separation is one of the most important events that we need to promote and enforce for effective

waste management and cause landfills to diminish in size bit by bit go. Indeed, even in Western

Europe where they have been taking a shot at creating logical waste administration frameworks

throughout the previous 30 years. In India, as well, we can't have "zero" landfill or "no" landfill

medium-term. It is not a practical desire ( Dubey. B, 2018)

Causes of Solid waste

Citified waste management is drawing increasing attention. It distinguished a lot of garbage

is lying overdue in the streets, causing disturbances, environmental pollution, and posing a public

health risk.

Proper Waste Disposal

Users are responsible for disposing of their own trashes properly. Improper waste disposal

may cause health hazard to the community. The handling of hazardous waste must be regulated

from the moment of generation until its destruction at its offsite final destination facility. A waste

management system must be devised before work begins on any laboratory activity. Clients must

comply with the rules and regulations of their institute's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)

office, which implements proper waste management rules and standards. Rioux, R., and Zaman,

T.

Theoretical Framework

This chapter includes information from existing theories that are relevant to this study.

With that being said, the researchers aim to further go in-depth with the topics such as proper

waste disposal in general. This topic of the researchers aims to improve waste disposal at

Silliman University. This research topic can help change the cycle of throwing unsegregated

waste in our public dumpsite. This is not only for Silliman University but also for Dumaguete

city.
Waste Management Theory

The Theory of Waste Management represents a broad conceptual analysis of waste, has the

activity and the objective of waste management. The theory of waste management founded by

the time it was expected that there would be harmful to human health and the environment due to

the plastics. It is to prevent everything in between humans, animals, and nature. Waste is crucial

to constructing a sustainable agenda due to plastics that takes 500 years to decompose in a

landfill, as an example. However, emerging from these conditions lead to conflicts with the

objectives of sustaining and preventing waste, because something already existed cannot be

stopped as soon as possible if such.

When a material is labeled as "waste," it will have a hard time sustaining a healthy

environment. Such that new dynamic definitions, goals, and ideas for waste management must

explain why waste was created, that why and how would we implement and make an abundant

solution to the problem. (E. Pongrácz1, P. S. Phillips2 & R. L. Keiski1)

Melloso, C. Waste Management Research form University of Pasay BPG

Social Responsibility Theory

Social obligation is a moral hypothesis, where people are responsible for satisfying their

requirement; the activities of an individual must profit the entire society. Along these lines, there

must be harmony between financial development and the welfare of society and nature. If this

stability is maintained, then social responsibility is accomplished (Pachamama, 2019)

The theory of social responsibility is built on a system of ethics. If it affects the community, then

it would be considered to be socially irresponsible (Pachamama, 2019).

Conceptual Framework
Conceptual Framework

So this concept is one way of seeing the effects of Waste Disposal in Silliman University

because Silliman University's waste goes to our public dumpsite. In this concept, we would

know how the Establishment took control of our waste. We could also determine the effects on

our ways of disposing of our waste. Unsegregated waste of Silliman University shows how the

school neglects the importance of waste segregation. This concept is one way of determining

how the school manage its waste. This concept shows what type of waste we dispose of in our

sanitary landfill. In Silliman University, RRR is observed as a way or a strategy of eliminating

and segregating garbage. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle can help, especially in segregation, these

labels are found in particular trash bins inside the campus. This concept will connect to the

Researcher's topic since they want to know how did the school took the responsibility and wants
to encourage the students to dispose of their waste correctly. This topic gives the researchers the

idea of how they will help in arranging and separating the trashes in different areas on the

campus. This helps the researchers topic to be more productive in changing the school's cycle in

disposing and segregating trashes in different areas inside the campus. As to how students use

the facilities/trash bins in Silliman University, this would connect to the researchers topic since

they aim to know if students are also disposing of the waste correctly. There are of trash bins

located inside the campus, but segregation is useless if the students don't properly dispose of

garbage waste in their designated trash bins. It will also let the institution know if the students

know about proper waste disposal. With regards to the effects of improper waste disposal - this

connects to the researcher's study since Silliman University provides trash bins around the

campus with different labels. If you don't segregate waste, there's a big possibility that it would

toxic be for the people and it would also lead to unwanted diseases.

Definition of terms

Extent – The point or the range where the school took the responsibility of waste disposal.

Waste – The biggest factor in waste disposal and the main concern of the Researcher’s study.

Waste Management - The act of classifying and disposing waste according to its type

(biodegradable, recyclable or residual).

Zero Waste Policy - An advocacy that aims to recycle, revamp and reuse trash to

eliminate or lessen waste production that will go to our dumpsite.

Methodology
This Chapter includes the techniques and procedures we used for this study. This chapter is

composed of research design, research environment, research respondents, research instruments,

data collection procedure, and lastly treatment of data.

Research Design

This study is quantitative research. This study allows us to determine and examine our

targets, which is students inside the campus that already know the implementation and other

ways of disposing of waste. This allows us to understand their opinions on how the University

took the responsibility for waste disposal. This study aims to gather information or data through

questionnaires or surveys, interviews, and observations coming from Senior High School

Students from Silliman University. This study uses descriptive survey method.

Research Environment

This study will be conducted at the Senior High School Department in Silliman University,

Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. The Silliman University campus is located along Hibbard

Avenue. The respondents will be asked to answer our questions inside the school campus. The

researchers chose Silliman University to have easy access to respondents.

Research Respondents

To collect data and information for this study, the researchers choose to tackle a simple

approach from a question from their research in obtaining data. The process involves interaction
between the respondents and interviewer. The Researchers will be able to gather data by

surveying with students of Silliman University Senior High School Department.

Research Instruments

To obtain information for this investigation, the researchers are going to provide

questionnaires, the specialists have the best methodology from the inquiries on their examination

in gathering information. The procedure will consistently include the connection between the

questioner and respondents. Researchers will assemble information by giving questionnaires to

Students from Silliman University Senior High School.

Data Collection

How the researchers work to accomplish collecting data is to find respondents that are

suitable for their study. Before we give our survey, we ask if the respondent has undergone

seminars about proper waste disposal and ask permission if they are willing to answer our

questionnaire and be interviewed. Regardless of the respondent has undergone similar seminars

as long as he's part of the senior high department. We question what their perception about

proper waste disposal in Silliman University since other people know about proper waste

disposal the researchers compared them to the respondents that have little knowledge about

proper waste disposal. The researchers can see the difference in the respondents answer since

people who join seminars have more understanding than people who don't. This study is

quantitative-based, so the researchers tally the survey to collect the needed data.

Treatment of Data
This study is quantitative so after gathering the data the researchers compile them and

compare them to the other responses to know the similarities and differences of the answers of

other people, and after collecting the data the researchers analysand pinpoint the crucial

information the greatly affects their study and know the advantages and disadvantages of proper.

We are going to find the average of the result from our survey to get the information.

waste disposal. The data collected will only be used in the researcher's study; the researchers

will ensure the respondent's answers and provide information about their research.
