Carbon dioxide,CO2 Emission rate in Nigeria

Nigeria: CO2 Country Profile
Nigeria's CO2 emission profile is characterized by the burning of fossil fuels for energy
production and industrial processes such as cement production

In 2016, Nigeria emitted approximately 82,634,214 tons of CO2 from fossil fuel sources. This
represented a 0.70% increase compared to the previous year, equivalent to an increase of
578,039 tons.

The per capita CO2 emissions in Nigeria were estimated at 3.37 metric tons of CO2
equivalent in 2017. Nigeria's annual greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 were 345.7 million
tonnes of CO2 equivalent
How many percent of CO2 need to be reduce in Nigeria
Nigeria, as a signatory to the Paris Agreement,
and has committed to reducing its greenhouse
gas emissions. As of now, Nigeria has not set a
specific net-zero emission target.

To achieve significant reductions in CO2

emissions, Nigeria
1 can focus on several areas,
including
Transitioning to cleaner energy sources
Adopting methane guidelines for the oil and
gas sector
Implementation of a carbon tax.
Reducing gas flaring
Implementing sustainable transportation
solutions transitioning to cleaner energy sources

Encouraging sustainable practices in

industries and agriculture.

Policy plan on CO2 emission in Nigeria

Nigeria has taken several policy actions to address CO2
emissions and mitigate climate change. Here are some key
policy plans and initiatives related to CO2 emissions in Nigeria:
Methane Regulation: Nigeria has implemented
methane regulations in its oil and gas sector to mitigate
emissions. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and
reducing its release can contribute to CO2 emission
reductions.
Climate Change Act 2021: Nigeria promulgated the
Climate Change Act in 2021, which provides a
comprehensive framework for climate actions at the
national level. It builds on prior climate change policies
and initiatives and aims to guide Nigeria's efforts in
reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2.
Renewable Energy Development: Nigeria has been
trying to increase the deployment of renewable energy
sources, such as solar and wind power. The country
aims to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on
fossil fuels, thereby reducing CO2 emissions associated
with energy production. 0 3 3 3 3 12 Medium

Avoiding High-Emission
3 Fossil Gas Infrastructure:
Nigeria is urged to avoid investing in high-emission
fossil gas infrastructure projects that could lead to
stranded

like the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline and additional
LNG export capacity.
