Chapter 6 - Definitions

1) Manure - animal dung used for fertilizing land.


2) Compost - decayed organic material used as a fertilizer for growing plants.
3) Wayside - the edge of a road.
4) Ledge - a narrow horizontal surface projecting from a wall, cliff, or other surface.
5) Lurched – make an abrupt, unsteady, uncontrolled movement or series of movements
6) Stubble – the cut stalks of cereal plants left sticking out of the ground after the grain is harvested
7) Nightjars – a nocturnal insectivorous bird with grey-brown camouflaged plumage, large eyes
and gape, and a distinctive call.
8) Ghostly - like a ghost in appearance or sound; eerie and unnatural
9) Hoarsely - in a rough voice
10) Lumbered - move in a slow, heavy, awkward way
11) Pier - structure built out into the water for use as a landing place or walk or to protect or form a
harbor
12) Marshy – wet area of land
13) Nourishment - food necessary for growth, health, and good condition
14) Thronged - (of a crowd) fill or be present in (a place or area)
15) Jostling - push or bump against (someone) roughly, typically in a crowd
16) Processions - action of moving forward in an orderly way
17) Transfixed - cause (someone) to become motionless with horror, wonder, or astonishment
18) Shrilly - a high-pitched and piercing voice or sound.
19) Menfolk - group of men considered collectively, especially the men of a particular family or
community.
20) Flanking - be on each or on one side of.
21) Pedestal - base or support on which a statue or column is mounted.
22) Stipulated - demand or specify (a requirement), typically as part of an agreement.
23) Organic - (of food or farming methods) produced or involving production without the use of
chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals.
24) Wire-rimmed - having thin wire like metal frames
25) Vitiate - spoil or impair the quality or efficiency of.
26) Sagely - in a profoundly wise manner.
27) Dialect - a particular form of a language which is peculiar to a specific region
