ABSTRACT

9
Mary Jemwill L. Lopez and Reann E. Aranda of Capiz State University –

Pontevedra Campus. July 2023. Design and Development of Sugarcane Bud and Sett

Cutter.

Thesis Adviser: Engr. Bonifacio A. Hontiveros

This study was conducted to design, fabricate, and evaluate a sugarcane bud and

sett cutter. Specifically, it aimed to: 1) design a sugarcane bud and sett cutter, 2) fabricate

a sugarcane bud and sett cutter, 3) evaluate the performance of the developed machine in

cutting sugarcane buds in terms of input capacity (kg/hr), output rate (no. of buds/hr), and

cutting efficiency (%), 4) evaluate the performance of the developed machine in cutting

sugarcane setts in terms of input capacity (kg/hr), output rate (no. of buds/hr), and cutting

efficiency (%) and 5) analyze the cost of the sugarcane bud and sett cutter.

In designing the sugarcane bud and sett cutter, the researchers gathered all the

necessary data from books, internet, thesis books of Agricultural and Biosystems

Engineering students and related researches. Design criteria includes: ease of operation,

ease of adjusting and repair of parts, ease of cleaning, ease of collecting output, safety,

and vibration.

The fabrication of the machine was done at Brgy. Lawaan, Roxas City, Capiz and

evaluated at the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department, Capiz State

University – Pontevedra Campus. The fabrication process includes: lay-outing, cutting,

machining, boring, welding, assembling, sanding, pre-testing, and painting.
