Lesson: DIVISION OF POLYNOMIALS USING LONG DIVISION

MELC 8 Quarter 1 Week 7: Performs Division of Polynomials using Long Division
Objectives:
 State the division of algorithm of polynomial
 Divide polynomials by another polynomial using long division
 Express each quotient using division of algorithm accurately and systematically

A. RECALL/PRELIMINARIES

ACTIVITY #1: R E C O G N I Z I N G P O L Y N O M I A L S
Instruction: Identify whether the given expression is a polynomial or not. State the reason.
1.) −3 p2 q−4 p+2 p 7 qr+ q−4 +5 _____________________ ________________________________
Not a polynomial because a term has a negative exponent
2.) u−u2+ √ 7 +u4 +u 7 _____________________ ________________________________

4.) m2 +n 3 −4 mn _____________________ ________________________________
not a polynomial because a term has a fraction exponent
5.) −6 m n+2 √m
5
_____________________ ________________________________
not a polynomial because a term has a radical with aliteral coefficient that cannot be simplified

Not a polynomial because a term can be simplified and turned into a negative exponent

ACTIVITY #2: S I M P L I F Y I N G P O L Y N O M I A L S

B. LESSON PROPER

DIVISION ALGORITHM FOR POLYNOMIALS

If P( x ) and D( x ) are polynomials and D ( x ) ≠ 0 ,then there exist unique
polynomials Q( x ) and R( x ) such that
P ( x ) ÷ D ( x ) =Q ( x ) + R(x )/D ( x)
Or
P ( x )=Q ( x ) D(x)+ R (x)
Where, R(x ) is either 0 or of degree less than that of D( x )

To divide polynomial by another polynomial using long division:

Example: Divide (x ¿ ¿ 3+11 x 2−4 x−9)÷(x−2)¿

1. Arrange the terms in both the divisor and

the dividend in descending order

2
x 2. Divide the first term of the dividend by the
first term of the divisor to get the first
term to get the quotient.

3. Multiply the divisor by the first term of the

quotient and subtract and the product
- + from the dividend.

13x
2 4. Using the remainder, repeat the process,
thus finding the second term of the
quotient.

5. Continue the process until the remainder

is zero or the remainder is of a lower
degree than the divisor.
2
1 3 x −4 x
- +
13 x 2−26 x
Therefore, the final answer is
22 x−9 35
2
- 22 x−44
+ x + 13 x +22+
x−2
35
