I. Title of the Seminar: “Kurit: The SMHS Campus Journalism and Writing Workshop”
II. Rationale:
Philippine history has been a witness to the power that resides in writing. Its national heroes not only
fought with fierce bravery in the battlefields but also used their wits and writing to awaken the Filipino
consciousness and nationalism and take the fight even to the shores of our conquerors. These events,
remembered and revered, are a testament to the might of the pen not only as a means of
communication but also as a tool to elicit action.
Through the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 (RA 7079), the Department of education acknowledges the
role of journalism in the holistic development of its learners. With its implementation, students are
given the training, experience, and exposure to enhance their awareness of the issues and events that
transpire not only in their immediate environment but on a national and even on a global scale.
San Miguel High School continually does its best to adhere to this effort of producing future journalists
and patriots. Hence, the school supports the operations of its student publication and the recruitment of
and training of its members. This is both in preparation for their roles in the school publication and in
joining competitions/activities such as the Division Schools Press Conference (DSCP) and the National
Schools Press Conference (NSPC).
This two-day campus journalism training is intended to enhance the students’ capabilities as members
of the school publication. Experienced speakers/trainers will be invited to provide appropriate coaching.
Moreover, the new editorial board will be determined based on the results of the training.
