TITLE: TYPES OF COMMUNICATION ACCORDING TO MODE, CONTEXT, PURPOSE AND STYLE

What is commncation?

Can you Imagine a world without communication?

Communication is a process of exchanging information, ideas thoughts, feeling and emotions


through speech signals, writing or behaviour.

Communication- from the Latin word “Communis”- which means common or to share.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

 Identify the types of communication in relation to communication mode, context, purpose


and style.
 Differentiate verbal, nonverbal, and visual communication and their sub forms in relation to
communication modes.
 Evaluate the differences among intrapersonal, interpersonal, extended organizational and
intercultural communication in relation to communication context.
 explain the differences between formal and informal communication in relation to purpose
and style and
 discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different communication types in various
communication setting.

COMMUNICATION ACCORDING to mode

Mode- is the medium or channel through which communicative intent is expressed.

TYPES of COMMUNICATION

1. Verbal Communication- refers to the form of communication in which message is


transmitted Verbally.

-A communication is done by word of mouth and a piece of writing. Provide pic ex.

2 types of Verbal Communication:

a. Oral Communication- spoken words are used. It includes face-face conversations, speech,
telephonic conversation, video, radio, or television, and voice over internet. Provide pic ex.
b. Written Communication - written signs or symbols are used to communicate.
The message can be transmitted via letter, email, report, memo, etc.
This is the most common form of communication being used in business. Provide pic ex.

2. Non- Verbal Communication- is the sending or receiving of wordless messages. It uses


gestures, body language, posture, tone of voice, or facial expressions. Provide pic ex.

3. Visual Communication- type of communication that uses visuals (such as signs, symbols,
maps, imagery, drawings or graphs etc. )to convey information and/ or messages.

COMMUNICATION ACCORDING TO CONTEXT

o Intrapersonal Communication- from Latin prefix intra means within or inside. It


means talking to oneself, inner talk, inner monologue or inner dialogue

o Interpersonal Communication- from Latin prefix inter means between, among and
together. It is the exchange of information between two or more people. AS long as
you are communicating with another person you’re involved in interpersonal
communication.

o Extended Communication- Involves the use of electronic media. Through internet


connection, communication of people who are separated by time distance becomes
quick and possible.

o Organizational Communication- focuses on the organizational contexts. Comprise
individuals who work for the company. This type of communication can be happens
in the workplace, can be forma or informal.

o Intercultural Communication- is the verbal or non-verbal communication between
people from different cultural backgrounds.

Communication according to PURPOSE AND STYLE

This type of communication focuses on the communication setting and mode of delivery

A. Formal communication – Employs formal language delivered orally or in


written form. This includes lectures, public talks/ speeches, research and
projects proposals, reports and business letters. Among others are all
considered formal situations and writing.

B. Informal Communication- this type of certainly does not employ formal
language. It involves personal and ordinary conversations with friends,
family members or acquaintances
