CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the procedures employed in this study. It includes the research
design, research locale, sampling design, materials and procedures, data gathering procedure,
and data analysis strategy on the impact of sleep deprivation on college students' academic
performance.

Research Design
The study was made by a qualitative approach. The qualitative approach was applied to
uncover the opinions of the interviewees at a deeper level of understanding through open,
verbal, and behavioral data collecting. The researchers used an interview method for the data
gathering to successfully answered the questions of “how” and “why.” The study used
phenomenological research for the chosen sleep-deprived college student participants to
identify their knowledge and experiences about the situation. In this case, the researchers
utilized the qualitative approach, interview, and phenomenological research to achieve the
main objectives of the study.

Research Locale

The research was conducted in the researchers' and respondents' residences using the
Zoom internet tool. The respondents were exclusively obtained in the province of Laguna.
Moreover, the researchers chose the area for convenience and to observe the impact of sleep
deprivation on the academic performances of students at several Laguna schools. Four college
students from the province of Laguna were chosen for this study.

Samples and Population of the Study

The researchers interviewed four college students all around Laguna. The researchers
employed them to be their interviewees since some of them are their friends and its easier to
communicate and talk to them. The researchers have the criteria that the college students have
or are experiencing sleep deprivation.

The first participant is a graduating student from Calamba Doctors College in the field of
Medtech. She experienced sleep deprivation due to poor time sleep patterns caused by on-the-
job training at the hospital. The second participant is a college student who studies at the
National University of Laguna. Also has some experience with sleep deprivation in the past but
has gotten through by getting his sleep back. The third participant is a first-year college student
studying Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation at Malayan Colleges Laguna. She is
known to have experienced sleep deprivation due to school life and personal matters. The
fourth participant is a college student studying Bachelor of Science in Accountancy at Malayan
Colleges Laguna. He is said to have suffered from sleep deprivation due to his desire to
graduate, which is why he remains awake until he completes his coursework.

Instrumentation and Procedure

The researchers employed a semi-structured interview, in which they had a list of

questions with expansive inquiries that had to be addressed during the interview. The
researchers used the mediated interview to make it easier for the respondents because they
live in different areas. The interview was conducted via an online application called Zoom.
Furthermore, an audio recorder was utilized during the interview to record the respondent's
responses, as well as the researchers' note-taking with a pen and paper. The interviewees were
composed of four college students in the province of Laguna. The interview was performed to
collect the responses of the respondents. Finally, the researchers will analyze the findings and
give generalizations about the impact of sleep deprivation on college students' academic
performance.

Method of Data Collection

The researchers conducted a virtual interview via zoom that consisted of the
researchers and one of the respondents. The researchers ask the respondents about their
experiences with sleep deprivation and how it affected their academic performance. The
researchers also conducted a document analysis via RRL in which they got their interview
questions and follow up questions. The researchers also transcribed the interview and reviewed
the participants' answers in which they’ll compare it to the RRL if some of the effects are the
same or the effects lined up; that's where the researchers get some of the data.

Data Analysis Procedure

Since the study used a qualitative method, coding and thematic analysis will be used in
data analysis. The researchers will conduct an interview and will look through the transcript to
locate keywords and phrases for their meanings. In the process of the analysis, coding is a must
when highlighting significant words and labeling and collecting qualitative data to identify
various themes together with their related contents. The thematic analysis will be applied to
patterns that can be identified through redundant data analysis, data coding, and theme
formation. Furthermore, the thematic analysis will attempt to elicit information about the
respondents' viewpoints, experiences, insights, and values from a collection of qualitative data,
which is the interview transcript.
