ABSTRACT

Social media platforms have changed how people communicate, share

information, and interact with one another. The phenomenal rise and
widespread adoption of social media have resulted in significant alterations in
human behavior, sparking both fascination and concern among researchers.
The purpose of this research is to present an overview of social media
behavior by investigating its different characteristics and implications. The
study begins by exploring into the fundamental motivations for social media
use. It focuses into the factors that motivate people to use social media, such
as the desire for social connection, self-presentation, and information-seeking.
It focuses on how these motives influence user behaviors like as content
uploading, liking, sharing, and commenting. The expected outcome of this
study is to guide educational practices and guidelines that encourage students
to utilize social media in a responsible and constructive manner.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Social media has become an integral part of the daily lives of people
all over the world, including students. Social media platforms such as
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have revolutionized the way people
interact and communicate with each other. These platforms provide students
with an avenue to share information, exchange ideas, and connect with friends,
family and colleagues.

However, the Department of Information and Communications

Technology (DICT, 2019) stated that when students are asked to submit their
work on social media platforms, they are more likely to be bullied
(cyberbullying). Students will feel additional pressure as a result of the
number of likes they receive. They also stated that comparing their outcomes
to those of others who are dissatisfied with the outcome is more likely to
create despair in young people. They also recommend that teachers involve
their students in undertaking performance tasks that incorporate their interests
and preferences; teachers should also avoid utilizing social media sites to
communicate information, such as assignments and school updates.

The aim of this study is to investigate the patterns and impact of social
media usage among students, with the objectives of understanding their
motivations for using social media, examining the extent of time spent on
various platforms, exploring the types of content shared, and evaluating the

influence of social media on their academic performance, interpersonal

relationships, and overall well-being.
2

Statement of the Problem

The study focuses on investigating how Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior

High School use different social media platforms, Frequency and duration of
their usage, and the purposes for which they engage with social media.

Specifically, this seeks to ensure the following questions:

1. What social media platforms are most commonly used by ALLSHS

students?

2. What types of content do ALLSHS students share and consume on

social media?

3. To what extent do ALLSHS students engage with academic-related

activities on social media?

Scope and Limitations

This study aims to explore social media behavior of Angelo Levardo

Loyola Senior High School students. This will involve selected currently
enrolled in Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School (ALLSHS), SY 2022-
2023. And if students of the following strands: HUMSS (2), STEM (2), ABM
(1), ICT (2), IA (1), SMAW (1), HE (1).

However, the 10 respondents in grades 11 and 12 who are willing to

participate in Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School will be chosen.
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Significance of the Study

This research will provide new insights into the behavior of social
media in ALLSHS students.

Specifically, this research will benefit the following:

The students will have control over the use of social media for
entertainment and networking, to enhance better time management skills, and
to expand social networking sites more for academic purposes. Adopting a
new strategy to understand the recipe for success, which involves the learner
and the environment in which the technology is used.

Parents will get online protection for their child; programs that
provide parental controls can block websites, enforce time limits, and monitor
the websites children visit and their online conversations.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Studies on the social media Studies on the impact of social media

behavior have yielded mixed results. Some studies have found a positive
correlation between social media use and behavior, while others have found a
negative correlation. Still, others have found no significant. Given the
conflicting results of previous studies, there is a need to evaluate the social
media behavior of Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School students.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Gil Appel, social media can be viewed in several ways.

In practice, it is a collection of software-based digital technologies—typically
portrayed as apps and websites—that provide users with digital environments
in which they can transmit and receive digital content or information over an
online social network. In this sense, social media refers to the key platforms
and services, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. There are several
ways to think about social media.

Although not all social media platforms are expressly meant to

encourage user socialization, it is one of the most obvious commonalities of
all types of social media. These Social media platforms are valuable because
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

people often do not perceive a difference between virtual friends and real
friends, as long as they feel supported and belong to a community of like-
minded individuals. The social media helps to strengthen relationships by
5
sharing important life events in the form of status updates, photos, and so on,
reinforcing their in-person encounters as well. (Thomas Aichner, 2021)

Kear et al. conducted a survey after students were asked to co-edit a

document using an in-house wiki after completing an online instruction on
how to utilize the wiki. They gathered information regarding students' wiki
usage over time. Although students learnt how to use wiki, the authors noted
that use dropped over time. They discovered that the students were
uncomfortable with altering the work of other students after further
investigation using the survey instrument. When asked to choose between a
wiki and a traditional discussion forum for this type of collaborative activity,
students chose the forum over the wiki. (Yuanqiong Wang, 2018)

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to ABS-CBN News, MANILA, Filipinos continue to

dominate social media use worldwide. According to a report conducted by the
creative firm We Are Social and the social media management platform
Hootsuite, Filipinos spend the most time on the internet and on social media
platforms. According to “Digital 2019: Global Digital Overview,” Filipinos
spend an average of 10 hours and 2 minutes on the internet using any device.
Brazil came in second with an average internet usage of 9 hours and 29
minutes, while Thailand came in third with an average of 9 hours and 11
minutes.

The surge in Mayor Nieto's Facebook following was a direct result of

Cainta citizens' need for hyperlocal and high-value information, such as class

School

suspensions and disaster updates. Prior to the floods in previous years, many
became aware of the local government’s social media accounts only when
they were already at the height of the flood calamity because they received
6
shares of posts from Facebook friends who are connected to the mayor’s
accounts.

Today, Facebook serves as both an official and personal means of

communication for the Mayor’s Office. It is his primary communication tool
for mobilizing his people or engaging their participation in official events. On
Facebook, he stated that he can tell his followers exactly what he wants them
to know “subtly, directly, and indirectly.” Subtly and indirectly, especially
when the person on the other end is visibly displeased or upset.

FOREIGN STUDY

The use of social media has both beneficial and bad consequences. The
negative impacts, however, are more obvious because students use such
platforms to have fun and pass the time rather than for academic goals. This
may divert their attention away from learning and academic tasks. This study
determined the percentage of students that felt more pulled to social media
than school-related activities, as well as the preference for utilizing social
media for fun rather than academic goals. The findings emphasize the
necessity of raising student knowledge about the harmful impact of such
practices on academic performance. This will assist pupils in excelling
academically and gaining adequate knowledge, which will improve their
performance in competitive examinations. (Manjur Kolhar, 2021)

This study intended to conduct a comprehensive review of the existing

literature on the impact of social media use on mental health. Social media is
new research that is fast rising in popularity. As a result, there are many
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

unknown and unanticipated constructive responses related with it. This

systematic review discovered that social media envy can affect individuals’
levels of anxiety and despair. In addition, several potential causes of anxiety
and depression have been identified, which need to be investigated further. 7

(Alexander Muacevic, 2020)

Furthermore, this study entitled “Impact of Social Media on Self-

Esteem" demonstrates that there is a strong association between social media
and self-esteem. Individuals' self-esteem suffers as their use of social media
grows. The outcomes of this study indicate that there is an important
connection between individuals' use of social media and self-esteem. This
study clearly reveals that Facebook has a negative impact on people's self-
esteem. People spend more time on Facebook and view other people's profiles.
Begin envious of specific people whom they believe to be superior or better-
off than they are.

LOCAL STUDY

A review of the research findings on the association between social

media and students' emotional traits revealed both positive and negative
findings in this study titled "The effect of social media on the development of
students' affective variables." However, the latter were more common, and
negative psychological symptoms such as despair, anxiety, and stress were far
from insignificant. These findings were discussed in relation to some more
relevant theories, such as the social comparison theory, which predicted that
the majority of the potential issues associated with the young generation's
excessive use of social media were caused by unfair comparisons they made
between their own lives and the unrealistic portrayal of others on social media.
(Miao Chen, 2022)

Overall, this research provides data on the effects and benefits of using
social media in tertiary education students. This study was titled "Social
Media Use and Its Effects on Tertiary School Students' Values in Cagayan
Valley, Philippines for Education Program Development". The majority of
students are female, and they have a significant impact on the students,
particularly in academic and real-life lessons. Students should be advised
based on the findings. Encouraged to use it as a supplement to their research
rather than chatting with friends in the library every time.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study will use a phenomenological research design. This study

will provide in-depth insights into how students perceive relationships in their
social media behavior at Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School. This
approach concentrates on the details and identifies a phenomenon as it is
understood by a certain person in a given circumstance.

Population and Sampling

Students at Angelo L. Loyola Senior High School, which includes both

Grade 11 and Grade 12 pupils, are classified as the respondents. The type of
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

probability sampling known as “snowball sampling” is where 10 participants

are chosen who are willing to participate in research. This method involves
asking relevant people who meet the qualifications the study requires.

Instrumentation

This research entitled “Exploring the Social Media Behavior of

Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School Students” is qualitative. The
qualitative research technique that the researchers used was a semi-structured
interview. The researcher prepared a set of questions that were answered by all
of the participants. Follow-up questions that were added to clarify and expand 9
certain ideas.

This study used in-person interviews as its research tool, focusing on

how students ‘social media habits affected their academic achievement. The
interview questionnaires have questions that will show whether using social
media everyday has a negative impact behavior on kid’s ability to learn or
whether it has a positive impact as well.

Procedure and Time Frame

The study got underway with a thorough analysis and comprehension

of the research topic and pertinent issue, with a special focus on Angelo Lopez
Loyola Senior High School. After that, the researchers will create a series of
pre-planned questions to ask the respondents in order to gather the most
accurate information possible. The study’s data collection will be selected
when the interview questions are developed. The researchers will evaluate and
interpret the collected data after conducting interviews with the chosen
respondents.
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

The study will be finished in two months and one week. It takes two
weeks to prepare, two weeks to find participants, three weeks to gather and
analyze the data. And then another two weeks to interpret the findings, draw
conclusions, and revise the study in its entirety.

Validity and Reliability

The interview protocol comprises questions that are designed to gather

information about students in Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School
10
who have social media accounts and their experiences, following our
research’s standard operating procedure. Typically, professional researchers or
advisers validate this kind of instrument, as it is primarily based on our
research objectives. Moreover, the respondents were provided with a
permission letter and were required to sign it to validate their participation in
the interview. To ensure the reliability of the gathered data, photo-
documentation of the data gathering process was also included.

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS/FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

The researchers interviewed ten (10) respondents from Grade 11 and

12 students at Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School to determine how
social media affects their behavior. The responses were collected face-to-face
and recorded. The researchers then gathered, analysed, and coded. A pattern is
then identified between the significant statements of the respondents, and the
responses will be appropriately labelled with codes.

students' behavior. The themes mentioned provide valuable insights about

social media behavior of students.

CONCLUSION

It provides valuable insights into the patterns and dynamics of student

behavior on social media platforms. Through an in-depth exploration of
student activities, motivations, and interactions, this study sheds light on the
various factors that influence social media behavior. The findings of this
research reveal that social media behavior is influenced by multiple factors,
including personal preferences, social norms, peer influence, and the desire for
self-expression.

(1) According to the findings of the research, the majority of Angelo

Levardo Loyola Senior High School students regularly watch Tiktok videos.
Similarly, their participation on Tiktok was quite influential, especially 39
because they were entertained.

(2) Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School students use social
media for a variety of purposes, including posting content, sharing
information, commenting on others' posts, and seeking social validation.
Students could accept the potential of social media as a force for connection,
sharing of knowledge, and personal progress while reducing the negative
affects by recognizing its positive aspects while addressing the challenges.

(3) The extent to which Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School
students engage in academic-related activities on social media varies. While
some students actively participate in and use social media platforms for
educational purposes, others may not.
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

RECOMMENDATIONS

(1) It is important to note that the popularity and usage of social media
sites could change over time. As a result, it is recommended that ALLSHS
maintain current on the latest trends and developing platforms. Conducting
frequent surveys or informal discussions to acquire information about students'
interests and usage of social media platforms can assist in identifying any
shifts or developing platforms that students are employing.

(2) Students at Angelo Levardo Senior High School should be

encouraged to actively seek out and share academic-related content on social
media sites. This can be accomplished by establishing online competitions,
challenges, or campaigns in which students are required to create and share
educational information. Collaboration with teachers to generate interesting
educational content designed specifically for social media platforms can help
increase student interest and involvement.
40

(3) This can include having subject-specific groups or pages on

platforms like Facebook or Twitter, sharing resources, and building an online
learning community. It would also be useful to provide students with direction
and training on how to use social media successfully for educational purposes.
Teachers can also experiment with using social media sites for assignments,
quizzes, and delivering fast feedback to students.

How do you think social media affects students’ academic purposes?

“In my opinion, yung pag gamit ng social media to me it is like a

distraction of the students. It depends if their using it frequently for doing their

then they haven't focus on another then, they just don't do the work given to
them, that what I think.”

79
But in your opinion, what do you think affects students' academic performance
when it comes to social media?
“Social media makes it more convenient to connect with people, find
answers, and entertain oneself. It's an all-in-one device that can be easily
carried around. Students can simply take out their cellphones if they want to
do something else, they are interested in. So, social media is one of the things
they can do on their cellphones.”

How do you think social media impacts students’ mental health?

"Depending on what social media they use, sometimes they use it

where their ego inflates or deflates, as if they fed too much ego in Facebook,
they think they're better. So, they have a war perception of themselves, or they
think they're worthless because if they respond in Facebook, that's why I think
to the ego."

How do you think social media affects students’ self-esteem?

“Sa self-esteem naman, yun nga when the ego is affected naa-affect
den yung perception ng sarili so if we think that we’re better we estimate our
abilities and then if our ego is deflated, we think we can do anything so don't

“Ahh sa social skills for communication purposes in social media, we

like to use shortcuts nowadays, so it hampers our ahh vocabulary; sometimes
we can’t use long words, sometimes were overwhelmed with just long words.
When compared to other English speakers, tayo medyo nahi-hirapan tayo sa

nila mangyari, which in fact is hindi naman lahat ng nasa social media is
accurate.”

How do you think social media affects students’ self-esteem?

“Depende din po kasi yun sa students kung yung social media po ba ay

is magiging way para i-lift yung self-esteem niya or mado-down siya, lalo
since yung iba naman po is nagka-karoon ng insecurities and yung iba naman
83

How do you think social media affects students’ social skills?

“Nakaka-apekto po siya, in a way na nasasanay po tayo na sa social

media… sa digital world nalang po nag sosocialize, kumbaga dahil po don
mas parang nagkakaroon po ng addiction. Then, mas dun nalang po.”

How do you think students’ social media behavior is different from adults’
social media behavior?

Respondent No. 4: Ms. Grade 12 HUMSS

How do you think social media affects students’ academic purposes?

"I think social media affects students’ academic performance,

especially while doing their homework. The students use a social media
platform to search for something relevant to their study when studying here in
school. Some students used to have a platform or technology from an
academic perspective when doing their homework. It makes social media have
a negative impact on their academic performance. It could lower their grades
if the teacher caught them cheating using that."

84
How do you think social media impacts students’ mental health?

"Social media influences the mental health of the students, because there are a
lot of people using social media who comment on their social status. It makes
the thinking of the student negative, especially if the comment of the other
person is negative. It’s made them think that the student can be negative, and
the comments are negative."

How do you think social media affects students’ self-esteem?

"Social media affects the social esteem of students, especially if

someone compliments me; it affects most of them; it will become higher, but
sometimes social media lowers the self-esteem of students. Sometimes they
give negative comments about students in their school, or sometimes you post

that some good work is relevant to a different subject; there are some people
giving comments that make self-esteem low."

have you personally experienced a decrease in self-esteem?

“Yes, I have experienced a decrease in self-esteem due to strong comments

and opinions on social media. It can alter our thinking and perception of life.”

How do you think social media affects students’ social skills?

"I think social media improves the social skills of students, especially
in encoding a slide presentation using PowerPoint. Social media has a very
important role, a play role, in the students of today, or Gen Z."
85

How do you think students’ social media behavior is different from adults’
social media behavior?

"I think that the behavior of students nowadays is different from that of
adults because Gen Z is more active on social media than adults are. While
adults are most prepared for writing or interviewing, students must be
prepared to use their gadgets for their homework and other purposes.

“So, I think it serves as a platform for students’ to express their

academic needs as well as their academic performances.”

How do you think social media impacts students’ mental health?

"It is highly relevant for students because what social media does to us
greatly affects us whether we admit it or not."

How do you think social media affects students’ self-esteem?

"So, like I said on number two, it affects us greatly; our self-esteem is

also very dependable on social media."

How do you think social media affects students’ social skills?

"It depends on the students, but in a good way, with the help of social
media, they become more sociable with others, but sometimes that’s not 86

always the case."

How do you think students’ social media behavior is different from adults’
social media behavior?

"So, this is two different generations, so our way of thinking and our
maturity are very different, so we think students are much more immature than
adults."

Respondent No. 6: Mr. Grade 12 STEM

How do you think social media affects students’ academic purposes?

“Um, para saken naman nakakaapekto yung performance ng isang

estudyante sa academically, ayun sa social media. Hindi naman ganon ka
major yung effects nya kasi nakakatulong yung social media sa… parang
nagseserve yon as coping mechanism ng ibang student and libangan, and ano

How do you think social media impacts students’ mental health?

“Para saken, major sya na nakakaapekto sa mental health ng isang

studyante kasi... ayun nga sa mga nakikita mo sa social media parang
maaadapt mo yung mga... iyon tulad ng nga sharepost na about sa depression
mga ganon like tinitreat nila as jokes parang magiging sensitive yung tao
ganito ganyan yung maaapektuhan yung mentality nila don so mababago yung
mindset nila kumbaga ayon... major yung impact nya para saken and ayun 87

lang.”

How do you think social media affects students’ self-esteem?

“Ahh eto den isa pa major den para saken, kasi in terms of social
nilang meme yung ano insecurities ng isang tao like yung nga pimples nila
like spots sa ewan kung san man yon tapos… yung iba naman nag s-spread ng
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School

motivational post or something like that so neutral sya para saken, na ano kasi
both nakaka-ano sya eh nakakaapekto ng maganda at masama so ayun lang.”

How do you think social media affects students’ social skills?

“For me nakakaapekto yung social skills ng student kasi diba

makipag usap sa mga tao ganon like ayun how to deal with different type of
magiimprove na from low to high or kung naiintindihan nyo naman yon ganon
basta magiimprove sya significantly.”

How do you think students’ social media behavior is different from adults’
social media behavior?

bagong bagay like ayun, for example, social media and such as like kung pano
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School

mag post, sharepost ano yung mga memes yun wala silang alam dun and mas

Respondent No. 7: Mr. Grade 11 ABM

How do you think social media affects students’ academic purposes?

"So I think it depends entirely on the student that uses social media but I think
on my conclusion base on our times a day as I see around on my classmates
fellow schoolmates, I think the negative effect out ways of positive outcome
of the use of social media when it comes to academic performance because
ahh for me social media is supposed to be a tool, it is supposed to be we used
to uh something used to increase our knowledge on things because its only
internet its easy accessible, it's free we can search anything we want so it's
such uh pervasive tool that we could use but unfortunately uhm more students
are using it for uh for entertainment for communication with their fellow
students uhm much more and even sometimes uhm something that can distract
them so I think in terms of academic performance it could affect them
negatively, but again it is up to the student if how it affects them
academically"

How do you think social media impacts students’ mental health?

"No, of course, I only use social media as a tool because, as I said

before, I don't use social media much in terms of entertainment or for
communication with my fellow students and, of course, my family and friends,
but only that."
89

Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

How do you think social media affects students’ self-esteem?

“So, it depends entirely on the content they are trying to watch or see.
Of course, if it’s positive content like informational, of course, real factual
informational evidence, and such, it has a positive impact on their mental
health because it’s positive, but it depends on uh, it depends because we face
uh content that could destroy their mental health because it's negative, or it
imposes a negative uhh negative answer, or a negative background, uh, so it
depends entirely on what they are watching, and it depends on the
responsibility of the student if the content could affect them.”

How do you think social media affects students’ social skills?

"So, in terms of social skills, I think it affects them positively because

social media is a tool for communicating with others online, and of course, if
you’re able to connect with them online, why aren’t you able to connect with
them in real life? Of course, maybe for some, it could be negative because all
they’re going to use is social media, but they can’t talk to the person in real
life. Maybe they’re just using it anonymously to talk to the person, but I think
the positivity outward the negativity because social media is a good tool for
communication, which is one of its main purposes."

How do you think students’ social media behavior is different from adults’
social media behavior?

"I think in terms of how long or how much they use it, students, of
course, because we are younger and more prone to using technology, use
social media more than adults. Maybe adults use it because they have free time
or are not at school or after work, but in terms of social media, I think students
give much more attention to it, right? They browse it more; they try to
improve their page; they try to gather more friends; but our parents, uh, or

other adults, just try to use it for maybe to pass the time or to watch other
things than they do before they go to work or something, so I think that’s the
different time."

Respondent No. 8: Mr. Grade 11 IA

How do you think social media affects students’ academic purposes?

How do you think social media impacts students’ mental health?

"Nakakaapekto ito sa estudyante, sa mental health? Uh nakakaapekto ito

minsan …uh minsan nabibigyan ng social media ng anxiety, depression ng
isang tao halimbawa, nabully yung isang tao, nasabihan ng kung ano, may nag
comment sa profile, mag kakaroon sya ng anxiety o depression, didibdibin nya
yon or what.

How do you think social media affects students’ social skills?

“Mas naiimprove nito yung social skills ng tao, kasi mas nakikipag
halobilo ka kasi, minsan yung tao, kapag nakipag halobilo sa personal, pero sa
social media, mas nakikipag halobilo sila, kasi hindi naman nakikita yung face
nila, yung expression kasi nila, kasi yung iba kasi uhh nahihiya makipag
walang hiya.”

How do you think students’ social media behavior is different from adults’
social media behavior?

“Feeling ko, hinde… siguro magsulat nalang talaga sila, sabay padala
nalang nila sa ano kasi minsan pag nagkakaroon mg hidwaan yung pamilya
eh kasi matanda ka papayuhan mo yung pamangkin mo mas bata sayo yung
Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
