Chapter I: Introduction
A. Background of the Study
The family is the main influence in the lives of an
individual and considered to be a critical component
that will profoundly influence students’ academic
performance.
These family problems can contribute to loss of
focus or acting out at school. Therefore, detection of
family problems that affects academic performance
is of utmost important.
Family function plays a major role in the formation
of one’s academic performance. The vast spread of
school failure is the most important problem in
educational system. The knowledge of these family
problems may be helpful to identify students at risk.
The purpose of this study is to know the effect of
family problems to the academic performance of
Grade-12 senior high school students.
B. Statement of the Problem
1. What are the family problems that arise on the
home environment which affects the academic
performance of Grade-12 SHS Students of BNHS?
2. Is there a significant relationship between the
levels of difficulty of family problems to the
academic performance of Grade-12 SHS Students
of BNHS?
3. Is there a significant difference on the level of
difficulty of family problems when variables are
grouped according to gender?
The following are the problem statement that
identify the issues in a concise and concrete way.
This study seeks to answer the following questions
1. What are the family problems that arise on the
home environment which affects the academic
performance of Grade-12 SHS Students of BNHS?
2.

of BNHS?
3. Is there a significant difference on the level of
difficulty of family problems when variables are
grouped according to gender?
C. Scope and Delimitations
The respondents of the study were limited to 100
samples and randomly selected on the population of
Grade 12-SHS Students of BNHS, School Year
2022-2023.
The sample of this study is limited to 100
respondents and it will only focus on the effect of
family problem to the academic performance of
students. The utilization of the data was the
researcher’s made survey-questionnaires. It will not
explore other parameters and variables such as
mental health and social issues.
D. Significance of the Study
The study on the effects of family problems to the
students’ academic performance will surely
contribute to the knowledge and understanding of
one’s family, as this will give way to immediate
solution and response to the problem.
This study is deemed significant to one’s family as
it will identify at risk students through detecting
family problems which affects their academic
performance.
Chapter II: Review of Related Literature
A. Related Literature
According to the study conducted by Brian, L. S.,
Geneva, N. A. M., Gossoon, J.E.G., Rosales Jr.,
N.M., Tampon, J.L. & Valenzuela (2019), family
problem are investable and create impact to the
academic performance of the students. The study
found out that family problem seriously affect the
performance of the student in particular to their
attendance and performance.
According to the study conducted by the students of
Best Link College of the Philippines in the year
2019, family problem are investable and create
impact to the students’ academic performance. The
study found out that family problem seriously affect
the performance of the student in particular to their
attendance and performance.
Another study conducted by Yunus & Baba (2014),
family environment appear to influence school
adjustment as well as academic performance. In
particular, family have been deemed to be the most
important support system available to the child. The
result revealed that family problem and
environment has no effect on academic performance
of the student; also there is no gender difference in
school adjustment in academic performance of the
participants.
Another study conducted by Yunus & Baba (2014),
family environment appear to influence academic
performance, as it is deemed the most important
support system of students. The result of the study
revealed that family problem has no effect on the
academic performance of students.
B. Conceptual Framework of the Study
The independent variable that is used in the study is
STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
while the dependent variable is FAMILY
PROBLEMS.
The independent variable is the one who can stand
alone, which means that the IV of our study is the
students’ academic performance. Meanwhile, the
variable that are being tested or measured is the
level of difficulty of family problems which affects
the students’ academic performance.
C. Definition of Terms
Academic Performance – the overall assessment
of students at school.
Family Problems – problems that's happening in
your home environment.
To clarify the terms used in this study, the following
words are defined operationally and based on our
own understanding.

D. Research Hypothesis
SOP#2: Is there a significant relationship between
the levels of difficulty of family problems to the
academic performance of Grade-12 Senior High
School Students of BNHS?
HO: There is no significant relationship between the
levels of difficulty of family problems to the
academic performance of Grade-12 SHS Students
of BNHS.
SOP#3: Is there a significant difference on the level
of difficulty of family problems when variables are
grouped according to gender?
HO: There is no significant difference on the level of
difficulty of family problems when variables are
grouped according to gender.
Chapter III: Methodology
A. Research Design
This quantitative research uses correlational
research design since it aims to know the significant
relationship between the family problems and its
effect to the academic performance of students.
We researchers use correlational research as our
design since our study aims to know the effect of
family problems to the academic performance of
students. As stated by Fraenkel and Wallen (2007),
correlational research is a research which purpose is
to find out the relationship between two or more
variables and their cause and effect.
B. Population and Sample Size
The study will utilize Grade 12 STEM and GAS
students of BNHS. A total of 100 students were
selected as respondents of this study and was taken
through stratified random sampling.
The sample was taken through stratified random
sampling. As stated by Parsons (2017), stratified
random sampling is a probability sampling where
the target population are divided into distinct groups
or strata where within stratum the elements are
similar to each other. In this study, the strands are
the distinct groups and randomly selected on each
strand. A total of 100 students were selected as
respondents.
C. Research Locale
The study was conducted on Basilan National High
School, located in Leroy S. Brown St. Eastside,
Isabela City, Basilan.
BNHS is the only independent and premier
secondary school of Isabela City and in Basilan
province as well. By this, the place was selected for
knowing the efficiency of the said study among
senior high school students.
D. Research Instrument
Through surveys and questionnaires, the researchers
conducted the data upon students of Grade-12 SHS
of BNHS. First part consists of respondent’s
demographic profile. Second part consists of the
following questions:
1. What is/are the family problems in your home
environment that affects your academic
performance?
2. Do you feel that family problems affect your
academic performance?
3. On a scale of 1 to 5, rate the level of difficulty or
how hard your family problem is.
Through the researchers’ made survey
questionnaire, we conducted the data upon students
of grade 12. First part consists of their demographic
profile which includes their strand, gender and GPA
for the 1st quarter. Second part consists of the
following questions:
1. What is/are the family problems in your home
environment that affects your academic
performance?
2. Do you feel that family problems affect your
academic performance?
3. On a scale of 1 to 5, rate the level of difficulty or
how hard your family problem is.

F. Data Analysis
As family problems can affect students in different
ways based on parameters of the study, the
researchers grouped the data into different
subgroups to determine how variables and
parameters affect the aforementioned problem.
The statistical treatments used in this study are
mean, frequency distribution and percentage,
Pearson correlation coefficient (r) and t-test for
independent variable.
As family problems can effect on academic
performance of students based on the parameters of
the study such as GPA, strand and gender, the
researchers grouped the data based on this
parameters to determine how this affect the
mentioned problem.
Since there are two null hypotheses, we researchers
used statistical treatment of data to accept or reject
the said hypothesis. In rejecting or accepting the
null hypothesis, we used the Pearson correlation
coefficient to know the significant relationship
between two variables and the t-test to know if there
is a significance difference on the independent
variable when it is categorized.
