AIM: To plan suitable messages for health and nutrition education of
different groups of the community and to select an appropriate mode of
communication to deliver the message

PROCEDURE:
1. Identify the focal/target group for whom the message is to be
made. The different focal groups could be — adolescents, school
children, pregnant mothers, adults.
2. Once the focal/target group is selected, identify the nutritional
problem or a topic about which you would like to educate the
group.
3. Identify a suitable message (aimed at the selected group) which
will help in improving the nutrition and health profile of the
selected group. This will depend on the needs and the existing
problems specific to each group.
4. Select a suitable mode of communication to deliver the message. A
variety of modes are available like poster, charts, flipbooks, puppet
stories and short skits to convey the message. Select any one
depending on the availability of time and resources.
5. Decide as to how to deliver the message.
I. Identification of a target group for education.

1. Old age
2. Diabetic patients
3. Pregnant women
4. Adolescents
5. School going children

II. Identification of needs and problems that are specific to

the selected group

S. No. Focal group Needs & problems

1. Old age People above 60 years belong to the old age
group. As a person grows old, digesting
ability and strength to chew decrease. They
should be given a proper healthy diet.
2. Diabetic Diabetes is a condition where glucose level
patients in the blood is in excess. They should
consume foods with less sugar content.
3. Pregnant To maintain a healthy pregnancy,
women approximately 300 extra calories are needed
each day. They should consume nutritious
foods for the well-being of both the mother
and child.
4. Adolescents Children between 13 to 21 years of age are
called adolescents. Due to wrong lifestyles,
they fall into traps like eating disorders.
Teenagers must have healthy and nutritious
food and stay away from bad thoughts.
5. School going Young children of age 6 to 10 are considered
children in this focal group. Children are too active
and playful in this age; they like more
sweets, candies and chocolates; this might
spoil their teeth and cause cavity and pain.
III. Planning a suitable message to educate the group

S. No. Focal group Message

Old age Seniors must avoid fried, spicy and
heavy foods. They should follow
specific diets in case of any health
conditions.
2. Diabetic patients Diabetic patients must have a
balanced diet, preferably fibre rich.
They should do regular exercises, quit
smoking and limit alcohol intake.
3. Pregnant women A woman must not be anemic during
pregnancy. She should consume a lot
of iron rich foods and maintain a fit
hemoglobin level.
4. Adolescents Adolescents are much concerned
about appearance and acceptance; due
to which they become over conscious
and lose their health. Teenagers must
have healthy homemade foods and
avoid junks. They should be
emotionally strong and follow good
diets.
5. School going Sweets consumed by young children
children should be limited and watched by
elders. They should be warned and
told about the consequences of
having more sweets.

(Conversation between the doctor and the patient)

Zena – What do the reports say, doctor?

Doctor – There is a good and bad news, Zena.

Zena – (Worried) What is it?

Doctor – The good news is that you’re pregnant,

congratulations!

Zena – Oh my goodness! Thank you so much, doctor. But

what is the bad news?

Doctor – You’re slightly anemic, which can be very bad for

your baby. The best way to deal with it is to have lots of
iron rich foods and maintain the fit hemoglobin level.

Zena – What foods are highly rich in iron?

Doctor – Eat lots of red meat, chicken, eggs, beans,

fortified grains, soya beans and nuts. Consume extra 300
calories each day for a healthy pregnancy.

Zena – Thank you, doctor. We will see you soon.

5 . SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN – PUPPET
SHOW

(Conversation between a doctor and a boy)

Sunny – Ouch doctor! My teeth hurts so much, it’s

extremely painful.

Doctor – You had too many chocolates again huh? Your

mother has stopped you several times, you never listen.

Sunny – But chocolates are so tasty, how can I stop

eating my favorite food ever?!

Doctor – If you don’t stop eating too much, you’ll soon get
cavities in your teeth which would be much more painful
than now.
At your age, you need to eat lots of healthy fruits and
vegetables to grow healthier and taller. Sweets only ruin
your teeth and cause you pain.

Sunny – Okay, thank you doctor. I won’t eat too many

sweets from now on, I promise.
