Complex Engineering Problem (CEP) Descriptive Form

Course Code: ME-224

Course Name: Mechanics of Machines
Concerned Teacher: Muhammad Adeel Munir

Problem Statement
1) A small three throw crankshaft has cranks of radii 125 mm set at an angle of
120 degree with each other. And are equally spaced with a pitch of 250 mm.
The revolving masses at crank radii are same for each line and amount of ---
kg (Take value of mass as the roll number of any member of the group). The
shaft is supported in two bearings symmetrically arranged with respect to
cranks and 850 mm apart. Determine the dynamical loads on the bearings for a
speed of 500 rev/min.
The shaft is to be balanced by means of a mass at a radius of 187.5 mm in the
plane of crank 1 and a mass at radius 250 mm attached to a flywheel situated
225 mm beyond the bearing adjacent to crank 3. Determine the magnitude of
these balance masses and their angular positions relative to crank 1.
2) A shaft 1.4 m long carries four eccentric loads A, B, C and D spaced at
0,0.45,0.75 and 1.4m from one end. The loads respectively -----, ----, ---- and
---- Kg (Take value of masses as `the roll numbers in the group) and
eccentricities are 36, 48, 54 and 96 mm. The directions of eccentricities of B,
C and D relative to A are 60, 200 and 270 degrees. The shaft is carried in
bearings E and F which are 0.175 m and 1.0 from A, E being between A and
B.
a) Determine the maximum and minimum vertical forces on bearing F when
shaft rotates at 90 rev/min.
b) What is the maximum speed at which shaft may run, to ensure that the
vertical component of the load on F is always downwards?
3) The shaft 1.3m long carries three unbalanced wheels A, B and C spaced and 0,
0.7 and 1.3 m from one end respectively. The masses are 8, 10 and 6 kg and
eccentricities of the centre of masses are 60, 50 and 40 mm respectively. The
directions of the eccentricities of B and C relative to A are 60 and 270 degrees
respectively. The shaft is supported in bearings at X and Y which are 0.2 m
and 1m from A.
a) Find the forces on the bearings, in magnitude and direction, when shaft
rotates at 90 rev/min.
b) A mass is to be bolted to the wheel C at a radius of 100 mm to make forces
on the bearings equal and opposite. Find the mass required and its angular
position.

Submission Guidelines for Students

 Students should submit the assignment in groups. Each group should
contain maximum 4 students.
 The contribution of each student should be written at the front page. No
assignment will be accepted without the contribution page.
 Neat and organized reports will be appreciated.
 No assignment will be accepted after the due date.
 Drawings drawn on AutoCAD will be appreciated.
