BACKGROUND OF EVENTS
KARACAS PARA KAY SR. SAN MIGUEL“DRUM AND LYRE COMPETITION”

kaRACas yells a joyous annual celebration of Iligan's Patron Saint, St. Michael the
Archangel, through music, dances, and colorful costumes with drums and lyres.

Brief History: Recognized by the Government of Iligan City, the Drum and Lyre
Competition was originally conceived by Rotary Club of Maria Cristina, with PAG
Virgie Halili as one of the original members. After PAG Halili transferred to become a
charter member of Rotary Club of Iligan Bay, she took charge of the project and
revitalized it. Thus, during the Rotary Year 2010-2011, she renamed it as the "Drum and
Lyre Competition." Initially, the competition had the participation of only three (3)
schools.
A year later, the Rotaract Club of Iligan Bay, the partner organization of Rotary Club
of Iligan Bay, under the leadership of PDRR Gervin Rino Halili, took the initiative to
innovate the event's name to "kaRACas para kay Sr.
San Miguel." The term "kaRACas" is derived from a local musical expression, "karakas,"
combined with the abbreviation "RAC" representing Rotaract. In the year 2019, the
competition attracted the participation of eleven (11) schools from Iligan City and
Lanao Del Norte. Over the years, the number of participants has grown, making it one
of the highly anticipated events during the city's month-long celebration.

Objectives: The main objectives of this event are to make Iligan City Fiesta merrier
through the parade of school bands honoring Sr. San Miguel and to showcase the
talents and skills of the youth through its musicalexpression and performance in
Drum and Lyre.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Greetings of peace and solidarity!

Fueled by our mission to "Create Hope in the World" and our dedication to peace and
mental wellbeing, we are eager to announce a forthcoming event that promises to
invigorate our community. Collaborating with the Rotary Club of Iligan Bay, we are thrilled
to present the "kaRACas" Drum and Lyre Competition. The event is scheduled for
September 23, 2023, and will take place at the scenic Anahaw Amphitheater, Buhanginan
Hills, Palao, Iligan City, starting at 6:00 AM.

This musical extravaganza serves two significant purposes. Firstly, it adds to the joyous
spirit of the Iligan City Fiesta by featuring a parade of school bands honoring Sr. San
Miguel. Secondly, it provides a platform for our talented youth to express their creativity
and musical skills through engaging performances in Drum and Lyre.

In connection with this, we are excited to invite your esteemed school as one of the
participants from across Iligan City and Lanao del Norte in this yearly celebration of talent
and tradition. The competition will be segmented into two divisions:

Category A: Elementary Level

Category B: High School Level

Please refer to the attached primer for detailed information about the event. The enticing
array of prizes for winners and participants, as well as the competition's guidelines will be
discussed this August 19 during the first meeting with the trainers. Please send your
confirmation on or before August 15, 2023, 5:00 P.M to our Secretary. For any queries or
additional information, kindly contact our Secretary, Ms. Laline Zalzos at 0906 133 6400
