HUMAN SKELETAL
SYSTEM
supports our body.
protects the organ inside the body.
provides storage of minirals.
involves in making red and white
blood cells; and
movement.
TWO MAJOR DIVISION OF
SKELETAL SYSTEM
AXIAL SKELETON
Axial bones are found along your body’s vertical axis -- in
your skull, in your ears (those are called ossicles), bones
in your throat (called the hyoid), vertebral column, and rib
cage. They’re foundation in which they carry your other
body parts, provide skeletal support, and organ
protection.
TWO MAJOR DIVISION OF
SKELETAL SYSTEM

APPENDICULAR SKELETON
All the bones of the arms and the shoulder girdle where
they attach are included – essential for the functioning
of arms and hands- and all the bones of the legs and the
pelvic girdle where they attach are essential for
movement.
SKELETAL SYSTEM: CLASSIFICATION
ACCORDING TO THEIR SHAPES
BONES CLASSIFICATION
BASED ON THEIR SHAPE

LONG BONES SHORT BONES SESAMOID BONES

cylinder shape and like a cube as their like a sesame seed,
they’re longer than length and width they are roundish.
they are wide are close to equal.

BASED ON THEIR SHAPE

FLAT BONES IRREGULAR BONES

curved and thin. bones.
TWO GENERAL TYPES OF
BONE TISSUE

COMPACT BONE TISSUE

Compact bone (or cortical bone) forms the hard external
layer of all bones and surrounds the medullary cavity, or
bone marrow. It provides protection and strength to
bones. Compact bone tissue consists of units called
osteons or Haversian systems.
TWO GENERAL TYPES OF
BONE TISSUE
SPONGY BONE TISSUE
Spongy (cancellous) bone is lighter and less dense than
compact bone. Spongy bone consists of plates
(trabeculae) and bars of bone adjacent to small, irregular
cavities that contain red bone marrow.
