large scale?
Unlocking Difficulties
Pest - is any living organism which competes with human, domestic animals or plants
for food and water.
Infestation – is the state of being invaded or overrun by pests or parasites.
Types of Weeds
1. Grasses - are monocotyledonous plants, which have a long, narrow, two ranked, usually flat
leaves with parallel veins and round, hallow stems.
Example: Echinochoacrusgali (L.Beauv.) Local Name: Dayakibok
Echinocloacolunum or colona Local Name: Bulangtiribuhan
2. Sedges – are similar to grasses but have three-ranked leaves and triangular solid stems.
Example: Fimbristylislittoralis Gaud Local Name: Ubod – ubod
Cyperusiria Linn Local Name: Alinang sud-sud
3. Broadleave – are dicotyledonous plants with net-veined leaves.
Example: Monochariavaginalis Presl Local Name: Gabing-uwak
SphenoleazeylaricaGaertu Local Name: Dilangbuti
Categories of Pests
Regular Pest – frequently occurs on crop- close competes with human, domestic association.
Example: Rice slim borer, Brinjal fruit borer
Occasional Pest – infrequently occurs, no “Peste” and Latin term “Pestis” meaning plaque or
contagious disease.
Example: Caseworm on rice , mango stem borer
Seasonal Pest – occurs during a particular season every year
Example: Red hairy caterpillar on groun Mango hoppers
Persistent Pest – occurs on the crop throughout in a particular situation.
Example: Chilli thrips, mealy bug on guava
Sporadic Pests – Pests occur in isolated localities during some period.
Example: Coconut slug caterpillar

Types of Pests
1. Insect – have three pairs of legs, two pairs of wings, segmented body and characteristic
compound eyes and antennae.
2. Mites – are creatures like insects but have soft body and four pairs of legs, these tiny
creatures have red and pale yellow color.
3. Rodents – are group of pest eat away large amount of human food and also damage
the crops on large scale.
4. Animals – like Wild Boar, Deer, Elephants, Wild Buffalo, Jackals, Monkey, Squirrels
cause direct damage to crop plants.
5. Birds – attack the crop plants and eat grains, like crow, Parrots, Sparrows.

Pest Control
Pest control is the regulation or management of a species defined as a pest, a member of
the animal kingdom that impacts adversely on human activities. This can be achieved by
monitoring the crop, only applying insecticides when necessary, and by growing varieties and
crops which are resistant to pests.
Biological Control
This technique is mainly used in greenhouses but can be practiced outdoors too. In order
to control pests biologically, natural enemies of the pest such as predators, parasites, pathogens
are introduced which geographically interfere with their ability to breed and infect the pests with
a fatal bacterial disease.
Mechanical Control
Mechanical control is simply using devices, traps, machines or other physical methods to
control or alter the environment where the pest may be found.
Cultural Control
When using cultural control, you alter the environment, condition of the host or site to
prevent/suppress the pest infestation. By disrupting the normal relationship between the host,
site and pest, you make it less likely for the pest to survive, grow or reproduce
Chemical Control
Pesticide is a broad and general term used for all chemicals used to control pests.
Pesticides are usually toxic to some stage(s) of the pest. Pesticides can be used to control insects,
nematodes, diseases and weeds
