A. Introduction 60

Panimula In agriculture staking is the practice of driving a stake or rod into the ground close
to a plant to provide support for its stems. Staking a plant means driving upright
stakes into the ground and fastening plants to them using plant ties.
Staking involves the use of pole-like material to support the climbing plant to avoid
direct contact with the soil. The stakes provide strength and support and they allow
plants to continue pushing skyward when they overcome by rain, strong winds, or
weight of their fruits or flowers.

In order for you to learn deeply the concepts of staking, kindly read the details
below:

Types of plants that need to be staked

1. Flowering perennials
2. Top heavy houseplants
3. Vegetables
4. Saplings

Different types of Staking

1. Slanting Mesh Method – the staking part of this method can be
constructed with the use of pole bamboo and tree stems.
2. Vertical Mesh Method – this is similar to slanting method it is constructed
with two adjacent posts while a bar is placed where the crop is expected to
climb.
3. Single String Method – it is constructed either in a bar of iron, wood or
bamboo placed on the two posts.
4. Parallel String Method – this method is attached to a vertical poles where

the crops to be supported are in between the strings.
5. Single Pole support method – this method the pole is erected aside a plant
and the plant is tied vertically to the pole.
6. Spiny stick support method – is similar to the single pole support method
their difference is the pole used has long spines with the plant to be
supported.

Procedures to consider in staking a plant

1. Know the stakes or correct system to use.
2. Build your own support system
3. Stake when plants are possible.
4. Tie regularly
5. Keep a close eye on single plant stakes

Benefits of staking the plants

1. Increases yield
2. Maintains fruit quality.
3. Enhances opportunities for pest management
4. Increases effectiveness of weed management
5. Helps in maximizing growing spacing making it possible to increase plant
population per given space

C. Engagement 60 Think of your own personal experiences on staking the crops or make a visit to a

Pakikipagpalihan nearest neighbor in your community and make some observations about their local
staking practices or procedures.

Note: Write your observations in your answer sheet. As evidences provide at least 2

1. Look for a plant either flowering perennials, top heavy houseplants,
vegetables or saplings available in your home. Show how to stake it by
taking a picture while it is being performed. In the absence of the said
photos, make a short narrative report on the tasks duly signed by your
parents or guardian.
