Calculation Title : Design: Check: Review: Date:
Calculation Of Pile Set Using Hilley Formula 2-Jan-2020
REF. CALCULATION OUTPUT

Pile Data
Type Of Pile : RC Pile
Pile Size (mm) : 150 mm x 150 mm
Pile Working Capacity : 20 Ton
Factor Of Safety Allowed : 2
Ultimate Pile Capacity, R : 40 Ton

Equipment Data
Type Of Hammer Used : Drop Hammer 3.0 Ton
H= Height Of Free Fall In mm : H
P1 = Total Pile Weight : 1.229 Ton (assumed penetration: 21.0 m)
P2 = Weight of Drive Cap : 0.410 Ton
P= Total Effective Pile Weight (P1 + P2) 1.639 Ton
C= Temporary Elastic Compressions : ( Assume ) 12.0 mm
W= Ram Weight (Hammer Weight) : 3.00 Ton
S= Set Penetration Of The Pile Per Blow : 2.5 mm
K= Hammer Efficiency : 0.80 (For Hydraulic Hammer)
e= Coeffcient Of Restitution : 0.4

For driven piles, caculations are usully based on the Hilley Formula the basic fomula is :
2
η = (W+e P)
W+P

η = 3.00 + 0.40 x 0.40 x 1.639

3.00 + 1.639

η = 0.703

Substituting Know Values,

R = W x H x η x K
S + C / 2

40 = 3.00 x H x 0.703 x 0.8

2.5 + ( 12 / 2 )

40 = 0.199 H

H = 201 mm

We proposed 'H' = 200 mm for the free fall height . The maximum SET for 10 blows shall
be ' S ' = 25 mm . The actual set depend on the soil condition at site.

Equipment Data
Type Of Hammer Used : Drop Hammer 3.0 Ton
H= Height Of Free Fall In mm : H
P1 = Total Pile Weight : 3.368 Ton (assumed penetration: 21.0 m)
P2 = Weight of Drive Cap : 0.410 Ton
P= Total Effective Pile Weight (P1 + P2) 3.778 Ton
C= Temporary Elastic Compressions : ( Assume ) 12.0 mm

Substituting Know Values,

S + C / 2

80 = 3.00 x H x 0.532 x 0.8

2.5 + ( 12 / 2 )

80 = 0.150 H

H = 533 mm

We proposed 'H' = 530 mm for the free fall height . The maximum SET for 10 blows shall
be ' S ' = 25 mm . The actual set depend on the soil condition at site.
