2.3.2 Psychoactive Drug Infographic (24 points)

Directions: In this assignment you will be creating an infographic for a drug (the topic will be
assigned by your teacher). Before you get started, be sure to read the hand-out on “How to create
an Infographic”. Use this worksheet to organize your research.

1 The drug that you will use in this project will be assigned by your teacher.
The topic of Psychoactive Infographic is marijuana.

2 Research content and data on the drug and complete the Drug Infographic overview. You do
not need complete sentences; rather, bulleted lists of content and data.
 Overview of Drug (category/classification, chemical makeup- what’s it made from):

 History (include legal status): It came to the US in 1600. In 1840, it became widely
accepted in mainstream medicine and was an ingredient in many over-the-counter
products. In 1850 it was added to he U.S. Pharmacopeia. After 1915, Twenty-six
states passed laws prohibiting marijuana. During the Great Depression, its use was
related to crime and violence. In 1942, Marijuana was removed from the U.S.
Pharmacopoeia and doctors began to discredit marijuana as not having any
medicinal use.
 Method of Use (snorted, intravenous, oral, pill, liquid etc.) Smoked, eaten, brewed in
teas.
 Addiction Properties (is it addicting? If yes is it physical, psychological or both and how
does someone become addicted to it?) Yes. Physical and psychological. It produces
dopamine, and when your brain gets use to higher levels of dopamine that it can’t
normally produce, it becomes an addiction.
 How does this drug affect the brain? Produces dopamine.
 Short Term (immediate) Effects on Body (3): Trouble thinking, loss of coordination,
problems with memory.
 Long Term Effects on Body (3): Respiratory problems (more mucus, a chronic cough,
and bronchitis), fertility issues (decreased sperm count in men and delayed
ovulation in women), changes in the brain (can affect the parts of the brain that play
a role in our ability to remember, multitask, and pay attention).

 : This far in 2022, more than 157,293 people in Maryland were certified patients at
the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC).
In 2018, according to a Maryland High School Survey, almost 47% of 12th graders
