CHAPTER 1

1.1 Introduction and background

The body lotion is a semi-liquid substance designed to cleanse

moisture, treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, and itchy skin. It allegedly
used to keep the exposed skin smooth and soft. The lotion is a low-
viscosity topical preparation applied to the skin. Though some lotions
are used as a medicine delivery system, it is purely practiced to smooth,
hydrate, soften, and perfume the skin.

The research focuses on making an easy, affordable, and efficient

homemade body lotion. Many people are fond of lotion, but either they
can’t find one suitable for their taste or they can’t manage the one they
like, this research can encourage them to learn how to make their own
custom body lotion. Not only does the research show how to make an
affordable lotion but it can also be turned into a business since it’s a
more reasonable option it is easier to make the product into a business
where people can make it into a source of income.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Generally the goal of this study is to show how effective an affordable
homemade body lotion is. Specifically this study aims to answer the
following questions:
I. Does the homemade body lotion protect the skin while keeping
the skin moisturized?
II. Does the homemade body lotion help prevent dry and itchy
skin?
III. Is the homemade body lotion more efficient and worth it than
buying a body lotion from the store?

4
1.3 Hypothesis
H: Homemade body lotion typically possesses an equivalent effect
as the store-bought lotion.
H: Homemade body lotion does not possess an equivalent effect as
the store-bought lotion.

1.4 Objectives
The specific goal is to have a proper care product for the exposed skin
with an affordable option. With the possible terms of cost, it naturally
produces a difference than the store-bought body lotion. In the possible
terms of variety, you can customize the homemade product to your
personal liking. The core objective of making a homemade body lotion is
to supposedly gain and or maintain a proper care for the skin, and
possessing the freedom to enjoy a variety of scents that suits your liking.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The study is significant for not only to the people who likes body
lotion but generally to the public since the skin is the one of the most
vital organ of the body. Taking care of the skin can usually be expensive
with this study taking care of the skin can be more cost efficient. Since
this is a homemade product customizing are allowed depending on your
personal liking. You can include secondary products and experiment on
what suits your liking better. The fact that this body lotion is made of all
natural products adding ingredients haven't caused any harm since
there are no chemical substances used. Though still careful thinking is
still needed before carefully adding ingredients most of the natural
products is usually harmless with content moderation.

The intended beneficiaries of this study are the people who want to
learn how to make a cost-efficient, custom body lotion that helps protect
the skin. People who enjoy body lotions and want to make the product
into a business can gain knowledge about the product through this
study. Other people or researchers may equally benefit from the slight
knowledge in this study.

5
This study is significant for other researchers because the slight
knowledge stored in this paper/study can be properly used as their
factual basis or reliable source. Ideas, opinions, facts, and other things
that can be found in my paper can only be used as a basis but in a
notable addition be used to improve opinions, facts with a further and
deeper study about the topic in the near future.
1.6 Scope and Limitation
The study is intended on the efficiency of a homemade body lotion.
Its specific intention focuses on how the body lotion can be more cost
efficient than the store bought. Demonstrating the same effectiveness
and obtaining a variety of options regarding the product is also one of
the contributing factors of the paper. The study is limited to testing the
efficiency of the homemade body lotion by attempting it out ourselves.
Comparing the effectiveness of the body lotion to the store purchased
one. Research on the types of ingredients that can be used depending on
the personal liking.
1.7 Definition of terms
Affordable having a cost that is not too high.

Semi-liquid being able to flow but not completely

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Homemade body lotion or lotion itself is a substance or semi-liquid

product that helps properly protect and moisturize the skin. There are plenty
of benefits of using lotion on the skin like lotion re-hydrates the skin, naturally
replenish extra dry and rough spots on the skin, smooth calluses, it helps
yourself relax and plenty more

A lotion is usually in the form of a low-viscosity, oil and water emulsion

that’s applied to the skin as a topical for a variety of benefits including healing
dry skin and as a preventive measure and treatment for blemishes. Lotions
have minerals and vitamins designed to smoothen and soften the skin,
provide UV protection (sunscreen), and even promote tanning. Lotions can
also be used as topical medical applications in the case of acne blemish gels
and cortisone creams. Although it has fewer overall applications than lotion,
moisturizer is a similar emulsion of oils, lubricants, skin lipids and sterols
used to hydrate the skin. Moisturizers range from low to high viscosity
depending on the type of skin they are manufactured for and prevent/treat
dry skin, improve skin tone and are also designed to cover up blemishes.

Over the last 20 years, clinical and laboratory studies have identified the
benefits of an array of natural ingredients for skin care. Consequently, a
number of these ingredients and compounds are today being developed, used
or considered not only for anti-aging effects, but also for use in dermatologic
disorders. Additional research is needed to determine to confirm and
elucidate the benefits of these ingredients in the prevention and management
of skin disease. Natural products are well regarded as a rich source of
cosmeceuticals. Different classes of natural compounds originating from
animal, plant, and marine algal sources are placed under the category of high-
valued cosmetic ingredients. The extraction of fatty acid components from
botanicals and other natural sources opens up a big market in the cosmetic
industry.

7
Organic homemade lotion (OHL) and store bought lotion (SBL)is
completely different in many ways. HOL is strictly made of butters and oils in
which many people are not comfortable with due to the “greasy" feeling that
goes away in a few minutes. Most people are not comfortable with it, but in
European countries, they use oils and butters to nourish their skin.SBL is
made of synthetic chemicals and water which is mostly the main ingredient in
which leaves your skin wanting more hydration and forces you to reapply
several times a day. The only natural ingredient it has is oat flour at least.

Homemade lotion helps us save more money. Homemade beauty

products have far fewer ingredients than about 99% of the products you’ll
find at the store. Fewer ingredients mean they’re cheaper to make. With
homemade beauty products, you’re typically going to be making more than a
“single serving,” meaning you’ll have enough to use in the future. The
materials for a homemade product are most likely found lying around the
house or if not the materials can be easily accessed. Homemade products are
most likely to be safer than the store bought due to the fact that store bought
products contains chemicals that de-oil our skin or worst irritates our skin
and may cause damage to it.

Almonds are the edible seeds of the Prunus dulcis tree, more commonly
known as the almond tree. Although almonds are commonly referred to as
nuts, they’re actually the seeds found at the center of the almond fruit, which
closely resembles a peach. Almonds can be consumed whole, ground into flour
and even made into non-dairy milk. They are very rich in fat, making them a
perfect source of oil. Sweet almonds are the variety typically eaten and used to
make foods, oils and cosmetics. Meanwhile, bitter almonds are believed to
have medicinal properties, though they can be toxic if they’re not properly
processed. Moreover, they’re not widely available.

Coconut oil is extracted from the kernel of matured coconuts harvested from
the coconut palm and is high in saturated fats. Coconut oil is a common edible
oil in certain countries, and there is a controversy regarding its effects on lipid
profiles and cardiovascular disease risk. The high content of SFA raised
concerns that it could lead to more artherogenic lipid profiles, and thus, health
8
professionals in the 1980s recommended that coconut oil should not be used.
This has changed however, as it was noted that countries with high intake of
tropical oils had some of the lowest rates of cardiovascular heart disease, and
recently, the use of coconut oil has become more popular because of the
potential cardiovascular benefits.

Beeswax is a natural substance generated and secreted by honey bees that use
it to develop their honeycombs. Beeswax is comprised largely of fatty acids,
hydrocarbons, and esters. The wax is hard and breakable when cold but soft
and pliable when heated or exposed to human body temperature. Because
Beeswax does not spoil, become rancid, or otherwise expire, it can continue to
be reheated and reused. Like the varying colors of honey, the color of the wax
depends on the age of the bees, the flowers from which they gather the nectar,
the region of flower growth, and the purity of the honey. Beeswax ranges in
color from almost white to black, although it is typically a shade along the
yellow spectrum, appearing to be bright yellow, butterscotch yellow, or light
amber. These colors are due to the pollen, resin, and gum content in the
originating honey. These elements are also responsible for contributing to the
agreeable scent of both the honey and the wax. Used cosmetically, such as in
lip products, moisturizers, and eye makeup, Beeswax hydrates, conditions,
soothes, and calms the skin. Without clogging the pores and preventing the
skin from being able to breathe, Beeswax creates a hydrating, long-lasting
protective barrier to protect it against environmental pollutants as well as the
harsh effects of the elements. Its exfoliating and reparative properties
combined with its vitamin content helps promote the skin’s regeneration and
rejuvenation by helping diminish the appearance of the signs of aging,
including spots, wrinkles, and skin damage. Used in natural product
formulations, Beeswax offers its scent, which may be characterized as mild,
warm, sensual, floral, woody, rich, “oriental,” or a combination of these
descriptions, depending on the preferred Beeswax. Refreshing, restorative,
and gentle enough for use on even the most sensitive skin, Beeswax is known
to soothe itchiness and irritation, to nourish, and to soften dry, cracked,
broken areas, making it ideal for use in lip balms. Used in hair, Beeswax

9
contributes shine that promotes the hair’s luster, making it valuable for use in
hair products that promote the look of sleekness, such as pomades. ()

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble, essential nutrient with anti-inflammatory

properties. Vitamin E helps support the immune system, cell function, and
skin health. It’s an antioxidant, making it effective at combating the effects of
free radicals produced by the metabolism of food and toxins in the
environment. Vitamin E may be beneficial at reducing UV damage to skin. UV
light and sun exposure reduce vitamin E levels in skin. Vitamin E levels also
decrease with age. However, vitamin E is available in many foods, in
supplement form, and as an ingredient in products applied topically.

Vitamin E is often used in skin creams and lotions because it is believed to

play a role in encouraging skin healing and reducing scarring after injuries
such as burns. In foods, the most abundant sources of vitamin E are vegetable
oils such as palm oil, sunflower, corn, soybean and olive oil. Nuts, sunflower
seeds, sea buckthorn berries, and wheat germ are also good sources. Other
sources of vitamin E are whole grains, fish, peanut butter, and green leafy
vegetables. Fortified breakfast cereals are also an important source of vitamin
E in the United States. Although originally extracted from wheat germ oil,
most natural vitamin E supplements are now derived from vegetable oils,
usually soybean oil.

Shea butter is a seed fat that comes from the shea tree. The shea tree is found
in East and West tropical Africa. The shea butter comes from two oily kernels
within the shea tree seed. After the kernel is removed from the seed, it is
ground into a powder and boiled in water. The butter then rises to the top of
the water and becomes solid. People apply shea butter to the skin for acne,
burns, dandruff, dry skin, eczema, and many other conditions, but there is no
good scientific evidence to support these uses.

Shea butter has been proven to have extensive anti-inflammatory properties.

Redness and swelling on your face may be calmed by applying shea butter
products .The rich tree-nut oils in shea butter can soak into your skin, creating
a smooth and soft barrier that seals in moisture. This moisturizing effect can

10
last several hours. Shea butter has also been reported to have anti-aging
properties. If true, the exact mechanism isn’t well-known and may be related
to promoting collagen production or decreasing the breakdown of collagen
that’s already present.

The first records of essential oils come from ancient India, Persia, and Egypt;
and both Greece and Rome conducted extensive trade in odoriferous oils and
ointments with the countries of the Orient. Most probably these products
were extracts prepared by placing flowers, roots, and leaves in fatty oils.
Essential oil, highly volatile substance isolated by a physical process from an
odoriferous plant of a single botanical species. The oil bears the name of the
plant from which it is derived; for example, rose oil or peppermint oil. Such
oils were called essential because they were thought to represent the very
essence of odour and flavour. Distillation is the most common method for
isolation of essential oils, but other processes—including enfleurage
(extraction by using fat), maceration, solvent extraction, and mechanical
pressing—are used for certain products. Younger plants produce more oil
than older ones, but old plants are richer in more resinous and darker oils
because of the continuing evaporation of the lighter fractions of the oil.

Chapter III
METHODOLOGY
3.1 Research Design
This study made use of the experimental research design to bring about
the benefits of making homemade organic body lotion. The researcher
performed the experimentation and disclosed the data and information
gathered to verify the study. The study used the experimental or the
investigatory method to gather, collect and observe. The gathering of
collected data a hypothesis was prepared for the collection of the needed
information and data.
Experimentation was used to gain knowledge of the benefits of the
homemade organic product as a replacement to store bought body lotion.
Moreover the experiment showed an authentic result that backs up the
statement of the study as well as the significance of the study as previously
stated.
All of the customized choices were collected and noted while the
information, dat
a and results that were concluded is gathered for any analysis.
3.2 Instruments to collect data
1. Collection of materials. The materials needed for this experiment can
be easily bought. Over 90% of the materials can be found in regular
super markets or bath and body shops as well as cosmetic shops. Online
purchases of these materials are also advisable as it takes less than a
week.
2. Preparation of materials. Almond oil obtained from almond seeds.
Usually can be found in care and body wash stores and ultimately in
supermarkets. Coconut oil extracted from the kernel of the coconut and
filtered to have a smooth texture. Found in any grocery stores. Beeswax

12
grated from honeycombs can be found in health and body shops.
Vitamin E usually stored in a capsule like container is usually found in
cosmetic stores. Shea butter that comes from a shea tree can be bought
in cosmetic shops. Essential oils or fragrant oils are usually bought in
health and body stores but can also be found in department stores. All
of the said materials can also be bought in online shops.
3. Evaluation. To distinguish the effectiveness of the product pretest and
posttest has been administered. Rough and dry skin can be the
description of the skin before any usage of the product. After a few
days, roughly 3 days into using the product a significant difference can
be seen on the skin. Vibrant and a hydrated skin is the effect of the
product within a short period of time. An exact distinction has not been
concluded due to the shortness of time. The recommended time of
usage of the product to show a great difference is 6 months the longest.
4. Comparison. Within the experiment two trials were done. The first
trial only 10 capsules of vitamin E were put into the product and white
tea ginger essential oil was used. The second trial 15 capsules of
vitamin E were included with “ocean breeze” fragrance oil. T1 (trial 1)
showed a positive effect resulting in soft texture of the skin as well as
the soft and relaxing smell of the product due to the essential oil.
Furthermore T2 showed a different positive effect with a more vibrant,
hydrated and soft skin with a refreshing and stronger smell due to the
fragrance oil.

Prepare all of the needed material including the optional materials for any
customization. First step is to combine the ½ cup of almond oil, ¼ cup of
coconut oil, ¼ cup of beeswax, and the 2 TBSP of shea butter in a glass bowl
on top of a simmering pan of water to melt the materials together. Pre boiling
the water is advisable due to it being less time consuming. Second stir with a
spoon or spatula occasionally as all of the ingredients melt. It takes up to 5
minutes until the materials are all melted. Keep the heat of the fire in a
temperature where the water continuously boils. Third when all ingredients
are completely melted, add the 1 tsp vitamin E oil and any essential oils or
scents. Keep stirring until all of the ingredients are well mixed with each
other. Lastly is to pour into a glass jar or tin for storage. (Small mason jars
work perfectly for this.)

Chapter IV

Collection, Analysis, and Interpretation of Data

4.1 Summary

The purpose of this study is to prove and test the effectiveness of a homemade

organic body lotion to be used as an alternative to the store bought lotion. The

researcher went thru a methodology where in the effectiveness of the homemade

organic body lotion was tested.

Within the process the homemade body lotion was tested by applying the product

on the skin. The product was also compared with a store bought lotion with the

basis of how long the skin absorbs the lotions, the feeling of the lotion on the skin,

and the aromatic smell of the lotions to define the difference and the effectiveness

and validity of the homemade lotion compared to the store bought lotion.

Within the methodology data and information was acquired. With the data that was

acquired, measuring the contrasting outcome of the effects of the lotions going

through calculations and procedures.

4.2 Presentation of Data

Body lotion is a semi-liquid substance made up of various kinds of oils and

wax that is commonly used within skincare products. Within the homemade

19
body lotion any customization is possible within the fragrance, choice of oils

and amount of vitamin E within the product.

Formed within the experimentation of the researcher the homemade organic

body lotion is efficient enough to be a replacement to the store bought lotion

with it being able to moisturize and protect the skin hence the product serving

its purpose.

To demonstrate the efficiency of the product in comparison to the store

bought lotion, experimentation was put into place.

types of the lotion.

Chapter V
SUMMARY, CONCLUTION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
5.1 Summary

23
Lotion is a semi liquid substance used for the skin. The research is
helpful because the experiment (using organic materials to make homemade
organic body lotion) is extremely helpful and can provide useful information.
The researcher used this experiment to compare the effectiveness of the
homemade lotion to store bought lotion. The principle objective of the
research is whether homemade lotion is a compatible substitute to store
bought lotion. The researcher has proven the products effectiveness by the
means of analyzing data, data gathering and testing the product. Its
effectiveness can be proven due to the product being already tested and with
the data that has been gathered throughout the previews chapters. The
research is not only helpful; it can also help future researchers within the
cosmetic field.
5.2 Major Findings
The major findings are the result of the experimentation namely the data
within the chart that has been previously stated in the past chapter. The
findings may only validate whether the hypothesis within the study is valid or
not. Through the research, the researcher has seen the product as an effective
substitute to store bought lotion. For any further analyzation a chart has been
provided along with the gathered data used to compare and validate the
products effectiveness. The researcher has seen how the skin absorbs the
lotion, how the skin reacts to the lotion and what is the effect of the
homemade lotion to the skin, due to multiple trials being compared with store
bought lotion. Even though the time absorption between the two types of
lotion has a significant difference, the effects of the lotions are more similar.

5.3 Conclusions
With the conclusion readers and future researchers can recognize and
acknowledge the importance of the research and how it may be helpful to

24
others. With the help of the gathered and analyzed data, the major findings of
the research, the conclusions are the following:

 Based on the experiment the homemade organic lotion has the same
efficiency as a store bought lotion
 Though both lotions has the same effect, the homemade lotion has a
longer skin absorption time
 The homemade lotion can protect and moisturize the skin
 The homemade lotion is a suitable alternative to the store bought lotion

5.4 Recommendations
After the findings and conclusions of the research, the researcher greatly
recommend to:

 Be wary of what customizations that may be applied to the product

 Be attentive to the creation of the product
 Do not mix all of the oils all at once, gradually add them one after the
other
 Let the product have a sufficient amount of time to cool off and settle
before any usage
