1 Clash Detection, Coordination & Resolution

1.1 Clash Detection
Clash Detection is a process to identify clashes between the various Models. It is very useful in
the design stage to reduce the amount of re-work that might occur due to modelling & design
errors in execution stage. The conflicts can then be resolved appropriately, saving time and
resources throughout the building process. Autodesk Navisworks (Internal & External Conflicts)
is the software used for identification of clashes between models of various disciple.
1.1.1 Process Mapping for Clash Detection
The process followed for clash detection, as shown below, specifies the design model that must
be shared with the BIM Coordinator once generated, and thus the clash detection is carried forward
in Navisworks.

Figure 1-1 Process Map of Clash Detection

The Clash detection between design models of various discipline are carried out using Naviswork
Software. Firstly, using Navisworks export the Revit models will be exported as .nwc files and
loaded into Navisworks for clash detection. Then after appending the models ( eg architecture and
structural model ) the clash detective is run after setting rules and parameters for the design
models. The Clash report is generated in form of html tabular file format and co-ordination call
on various modelling and design errors are discussed.

The Design errors in Arch Vs Struc are as follows:

Figure 1-3 Clash Between Beam & Wall

There is an design error in the dimension of the beam elements that are extruding out.
As per the architectural drawing, the beam protrudes out by 485mm but as per
structural drawing, it is 500mm. There is a variation of 15mm between the two
drawings. The Reference is shown in image below:

1.3 Cost of Rework

For calculation of cost of rework, the above RFI situation is considered. Considering the beam is
casted on site as per the structural drawing. The wall as per architectural drawing is clashing by
15 mm. This issue is figured out after the conduction of clash detection. The cost for rework is
calculated. There are total seven such beams. Considering scope of work of two floors, total 14
elements. Equipment cost, labour cost, material cost and inspection cost are taken into
consideration.

1.4 Quality Checks

It is necessary to have quality checks for the conducted operations in order to properly apply BIM
to the project. To get qualitative results, many quality checks such as visual, interference, standard,
& integrity can be performed. The models created may be examined and different tests can be
done on them to analyse the amount of quality checks followed when the 3D model is being
developed. As established during the BIMxP, the qualitative analysis shall be followed by
selecting any of the four key quality checks defined. The following are the qualitative checks
performed during the process:
1.4.1 Visual Checks
Several visual checks were identified once a week for the undated structural and architectural
models. The parameters observed while conducting the checks were, intersection of two
components, unjointed components, and prominent modelling errors. Few of the major errors
identified were beams and column junction had gaps and walls were seen to be intersecting with
the beam.

1.5 Clash Resolution

For clash resolution following process is being followed currently:

Clash run for updated model is shown below image in which Struc vs Struc have 0 clashes, Arch
vs Arch has 78 clashes and arch vs str have 68 clashes.

1.6 Key Learnings

• The Navisworks software helps to identify the modelling errors and designing model saves
the re-work costs that might occur if not attended.
• The modelling errors are resolved by the respective BIM modeler whereas the design error
is corrected as per best outcome possible before execution of that elements starts.
• The modelling Standards are also set during these clash management process before sharing
it to the client.
• Using Navisworks' visualization capabilities to view and analyze clashes from different
angles increases and helps in better understanding the clash context and devising effective
solutions.
