Note: This lesson was supposed to be discussed last Thursday, September 14, 2023. It was not achieved because Saturday classes were
implemented last Thursday since HPTA was scheduled on Saturday.
Content Standards: The learners demonstrate understanding of classifying substances as elements or compounds.
Performance Standards: The learners should be able to make a chart, poster, or multimedia presentation of
common elements showing their names, symbols, and uses.
Most Essential Learning Competencies: Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds.
(S7MTIg-h-5)
I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. familiarize the layout of the periodic table; and
b. identify some information about the elements that may be found in the periodic table and the group
number.
III. PROCEDURE
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
1. Prayer and Greetings
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Classroom Management
4. Review of the Past Lessons
B. MOTIVATION
Pick 5 students from the class and divide them into 2 groups:
Group 1 – 1student
Group 2 – 4 students
Ask the class which of the group is an element and which group is a compound.
Element – no friend
Compound – has friends
C. LESSON PROPER
ACTIVITY
Introduce to the class the Periodic Table of Elements.
Ask the class the elements they can find in their surroundings.
ANALYSIS
In chemistry, a group (also known as a family[1]) is a column of elements in the periodic table of
the elements. There are 18 numbered groups in the periodic table; the f-block columns (between
groups 2 and 3) are not numbered.
The group number in the periodic table represents number of valence electrons of the elements in a
certain group.
For example, all the elements in Group−1 have 1 electron in their outer most shell.
ABSTRACTION
Ask the class the following questions:
1. What are the parts of an element found in the periodic table?
2. What does the group number on the periodic table represents?
3. Which group does Boron belong to? How many valence electron/s does Boron have?
APPLICATION
1. Individual Activity:
Have the students identify the element’s symbol and group number using the Periodic Table of
Elements. Assign one element for each student so that everyone can participate.
Name Symbol Group Number
Hydrogen
Oxygen
2. Group Activity
Divide the class into 4 groups. The teacher will write the symbol of the element (total of 10
elements) on the board and each group will find the name of the element using the periodic table of
elements. The group will select one member to answer on the board for each symbol.
IV. EVALUATION
V. ASSIGNMENT
Bring your Periodic Table of Elements for an activity tomorrow.
