4. A Separately excited DC motor has the following rating and parameters. Rated power 10 kW, speed 1000
RPM, rated voltage 220. The voltage drop across the armature resistance at rated power is 5% of the
armature rated voltage. Neglect all mechanical losses.
a)Determine the rated torque

b ) Suppose you want to move the operating point of the motor to 0 .5 nominal speed and 0.5 nominal torque

1 st using external resistor in the armature circuit and 2nd using variable voltage supply to the armature.

Calculate the copper loss in both cases.


c ) Draw the speed-torque characteristic curves for the two cases indicating the values of intersection with

the horizontal and vertical axes.

d ) Determine the external resistor to be inserted to break the motor dynamically from its rated operation

with armature current not exceeding twice the rated.

e)Repeat d) for counter current breaking .

5. A three-phase, 4-pole induction motor has the following rating and parameters; stator winding resistance
and rotor winding resistance referred to stator per phase 0.2 ohms, stator inductive reactance and rotor
inductive reactance referred to stator 0.25 ohm. The magnetization inductive reactance is assumed to be
very large compared to the leakage inductances. The motor rated speed is 1775 while rated power is 5.5 kW.
a)Calculate the air-gap power and rotor circuit copper loss in Kilo watts

b) Calculate the rated torque and the peak torque in N m -

c) The external rotor circuit resistor to bring the peak torque to occur at starting (zero speed).

d)Using torque-speed curve explain how regenerative braking can be implemented in induction motor .

6. Show that one phase of the six-step inverter in Fig. 1, can be modeled (represented) as shown in Fig. 2
below, v2 which is the RMS of the phase voltage, and which is DC circuit internal

resistance referred to AC circuit. Roc is internal resistance of the DC supply, VDc is DC voltage to the six step
inverter.
