4. RESOURCES
4.1 Approved Material
Only approved material will be used for repairing works.
5. HSE REQUIREMENTS
Hazard identification: Before starting the waterproofing work, a thorough hazard identification
and risk assessment should be carried out to identify and evaluate any potential hazards and risks
to workers, the environment, and surrounding areas.
Personal protective equipment (PPE): All workers involved in the waterproofing work should
wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, safety
shoes, and respiratory protection as necessary. The type of PPE required will depend on the
specific hazards and risks identified in the hazard identification and risk assessment.
Ventilation: Proper ventilation should be provided to prevent the buildup of fumes, vapors, or dust
that could be harmful to workers or the environment. This may include the use of exhaust fans or
natural ventilation.
Material handling: All waterproofing materials should be handled and stored properly to prevent
spills or leaks that could pose a hazard to workers or the environment.
1. Inspect the substrate. The substrate must be clean, dry, and free of debris. Any cracks or
holes should be filled before installation.
2. Prepare the substrate. The substrate should be primed with a approved primer. This will
help to create a bond between the membrane and the substrate.
3. Apply the membrane. The membrane should be applied according to the manufacturer's
instructions. It is important to overlap the sheets by at least 100mm to ensure a watertight
seal.
4. Protect the membrane. The membrane should be protected from physical damage and
sunlight. This can be done by installing a approved protection board on it.
Vertical Surface –
First Layer Application:
9. Start at the bottom: Unroll the first layer of SBS membrane SOPRALENE FLAM 180 4P20 at
the bottom of the vertical surface, ensuring that it extends beyond the intended waterproofing
area. Use roofing nails or screws, if specified by the manufacturer, to secure the membrane
temporarily.
10. Torch application: Starting from the bottom, use a propane torch to heat the membrane evenly.
Begin at one edge and move the torch in a sweeping motion to heat the membrane's underside. Be
cautious not to overheat or burn the membrane.
11. Bonding the membrane: Once the membrane is heated, press it firmly onto the vertical surface
using a trowel or roller. Apply even pressure to ensure proper adhesion. The heat activates the
self-adhesive properties of the membrane, creating a watertight bond with the surface.
Second Layer Application:
Overlap and seal: For the second layer, unroll another SBS membrane SOPRALENE FLAM 180
4P20 roll, overlapping it with the first layer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Typically, a minimum overlap of 100 mm is recommended. Torch the underside of the second
layer and press it onto the first layer, ensuring a tight bond.
12. Seam treatment: If specified by the manufacturer, use a seam primer or adhesive to treat the
overlapped area and enhance the seam's strength and waterproofing capabilities. Follow the
manufacturer's instructions for the specific product being used.
7. Construction Program
1. Surface preparation: Surface preparation is critical for the proper adhesion of the
waterproofing materials to the substrate. The surface should be clean, dry, and free of any
debris or contaminants that could interfere with the adhesion of the waterproofing system.
Adequate surface preparation should be ensured, and the adhesion of the waterproofing
system should be checked periodically during installation.
2. Installation inspections: Installations should be inspected throughout the installation process
to ensure that the waterproofing system is installed correctly. This includes checking for
proper overlap and sealing of seams, proper application of the materials, and any necessary
terminations, flashings, or other details.
3. Leak testing: Leak testing is critical to ensure that the waterproofing system is installed
correctly and is functioning as intended. The leak test should be performed in accordance
with the manufacturer's instructions, and the results should be documented.
4. Documentation: All quality control procedures and results should be documented, including
material testing results, installation inspections, and leak test results. This documentation
should be maintained for the life of the building.
5. Training and Certification: The personnel performing the waterproofing installation should
be properly trained and certified by the manufacturer. This ensures that the installation is
performed correctly, and the waterproofing system is installed in compliance with the
manufacturer's specifications.
