ATA SYSTEM : 73

TITLE : ENGINE FUEL AND CONTROL - FADEC SYSTEM - INSTALL "5BL" STANDARD ECU
SOFTWARE FOR CFM56-5B ENGINES (A318 CAPABLE).

MODIFICATION No. : 33239P8069 24705P8182

REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) 5BL software standard has been developed for
A318, A319, A320 or A321 aircraft equipped with CFM56-5B Single Annular
Combustion (SAC) or Double Annular Combustion (DAC) engines.

The 5BL software standard is basic on 5B engines for A318 type certification.

This Service Bulletin is issued to advise all operators of A319/A320/A321

aircraft, powered by CFM56-5B, of the issue of CFM INTERNATIONAL Service
Bulletin CFM56-5B S/B 73-0113.

The modification consists in replacing the FADEC software standard 5BK (SAC) or
5DM (DAC) by the new FADEC software standard 5BL which is compatible with both
SAC and DAC on CFM56-5B engines.

NOTE :5BL software can not be installed on SAC engines having 3D AERO Stage 9
HPC blades. 2D AERO Stage 9 HPC blades are required on SAC engines (refer to
Service Bulletin No. CFM SB 72-0182).

To modify the ECUs, this Service Bulletin recommends one of the following
procedures :

— Either the replacement of the ECUs PN 2042M13P02 or 1820M88P11 by electrically

and mechanically interchangeable ECU PN 2042M13P05 or the replacement of the
ECUs PN 2042M14P02 or 1820M87P11 by electrically and mechanically
interchangeable ECU PN 2042M14P05 or the replacement of the ECUs PN 2042M13P03
or 1820M88P12 by electrically and mechanically interchangeable ECU PN
2042M13P04 or the replacement of the ECUs PN 2042M14P03 or 1820M87P12 by
electrically and mechanically interchangeable ECU PN 2042M14P04 reprogrammed
and re-identified in shop;

— Or the reprogramming and the re-identification of the ECUs on wing : PN

2042M13P02 or 1820M88P11 becomes 2042M13P05 (PMUX, old front panel assembly);
PN 2042M14P02 or 1820M87P11 becomes 2042M14P05 (non-PMUX, old front panel
assembly); PN 2042M13P03 or 1820M88P12 becomes 2042M13P04 (PMUX, new front

panel assembly); PN 2042M14P03 or 1820M87P12 becomes 2042M14P04 (non-PMUX, new

front panel assembly).

The following new functions and improvements have been implemented in the new
5BL software standard :

— software updates, relative to the 5DM software standard for DAC engines are as
follows :

. DAC modulation change to reduce combustor inner liner distress.

. Increase of DAC 2 WF/PS3 start fuel schedule for cold ambient conditions to
improve cold weather start times.

. DAC cruise optimization logic (fuel mode optimization) : operating the DAC
in the 20/20 mode to reduce the Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) stage 1 blade
failures.

. N2 Rollback and over-temperature protection logic changes.

. Updates of T12 fault detection/accommodation/annunciation.

. Improvement of Fuel Metering Valve (FMV) feedback fault detection and

accommodation.

. Permanent magnet alternator failure detection and accommodation.

. Correction of unconfirmed ECAM failure warnings or maintenance messages.

. Selection of Maximum Climb (MCL) instead of current Maximum Continuous

Thrust (MCT) when no validated TLA.

. Improvements of TLA (Throttle Lever Angle) disagree fault accommodation

logic on ground and in flight.

. Deletion of TLA selection status input on A/THR logic.

. Deletion of continuous ignition when NAI P/B selected.

. Reduction of continuous ignition on-time during high PS3.

. Saving of ignition fault after an engine start.

. Reclassification of faults to improve aircraft dispatch reliability.

. Change of overspeed governor fault classification.

. Change of fault class for a single FMV feedback fault.

. Improvement of class 2 fault annunciation.

. Introduction and modification of SAC/DAC intermix maintenance messages.

. FRV logic change to improve valve reliability.

B. CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS

Accomplishment of this Service Bulletin requires the prior or

simultaneous accomplishment of :

Service Bulletin No. A320-73-1062 Mod. No. 27725P5568

Service Bulletin No. A320-73-1077 Mod. No. 32619P7919
Service Bulletin No. CFM 72-0182

NOTE : You must accomplish SB No. A320-73-1062 or SB No. A320-73-1077.

C. REASON

(1) History

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) 5BL software standard has been
developed for A318, A319, A320 or A321 aircraft equipped with
CFM56-5B Single Annular Combustion (SAC) or Double Annular
Combustion (DAC) engines.

The 5BL software standard is basic on 5B engines for A318 type

certification.

(2) Objective/Action

This Service Bulletin is issued to advise all operators of

A319/A320/A321 aircraft, powered by CFM56-5B, of the issue of CFM
INTERNATIONAL Service Bulletin CFM56-5B S/B 73-0113.

The modification consists in replacing the FADEC software standard

5BK (SAC) or 5DM (DAC) by the new FADEC software standard 5BL which
is compatible with both SAC and DAC on CFM56-5B engines.

NOTE :5BL software can not be installed on SAC engines having 3D

AERO Stage 9 HPC blades. 2D AERO Stage 9 HPC blades are required on
SAC engines (refer to Service Bulletin No. CFM SB 72-0182).

To modify the ECUs, this Service Bulletin recommends one of the

following procedures :

— Either the replacement of the ECUs P/N 2042M13P02 or 1820M88P11

by electrically and mechanically interchangeable ECU P/N
2042M13P05 or the replacement of the ECUs P/N 2042M14P02 or

1820M87P11 by electrically and mechanically interchangeable ECU

P/N 2042M14P05 or the replacement of the ECUs PN 2042M13P03 or
1820M88P12 by electrically and mechanically interchangeable ECU
PN 2042M13P04 or the replacement of the ECUs PN 2042M14P03 or
1820M87P12 by electrically and mechanically interchangeable ECU
PN 2042M14P04 reprogrammed and re-identified in shop;

— Or the reprogramming and the re-identification of the ECUs on

wing : PN 2042M13P02 or 1820M88P11 becomes 2042M13P05 (PMUX, old
front panel assembly); PN 2042M14P02 or 1820M87P11 becomes
2042M14P05 (non-PMUX, old front panel assembly); PN 2042M13P03 or
1820M88P12 becomes 2042M13P04 (PMUX, new front panel assembly);
PN 2042M14P03 or 1820M87P12 becomes 2042M14P04 (non-PMUX, new
front panel assembly).

(3) Advantages

The following new functions and improvements have been implemented

in the new 5BL software standard :

— software updates, relative to the 5DM software standard for DAC

engines are as follows :

. DAC modulation change to reduce combustor inner liner distress.

. Increase of DAC 2 WF/PS3 start fuel schedule for cold ambient

conditions to improve cold weather start times.

. DAC cruise optimization logic (fuel mode optimization) :

operating the DAC in the 20/20 mode to reduce the Low Pressure
Turbine (LPT) stage 1 blade failures.
