Case Study

The document discusses two cases of issues faced by flight attendants. In case 1, during the COVID-19 pandemic, flight attendants had to adjust routines on flights to ensure safety while dealing with health concerns from the virus and challenges with passengers not following mask rules. Their mental health was also affected by stress and potential layoffs. Case 2 focuses on safety and security issues following the 9/11 hijackings, which left flight crews fearful of similar events endangering their lives.

What are the issues faced by the flight attendants in both cases?

Case 1: Covid 19 Pandemic, Health risks (physical and mental), layoffs, Anti maskers.

 When the Covid 19 Pandemic arrived, it had a huge impact on everyone, notably the
tourism and hospitality industries. As each airline's personnel and attendants become
adjusted to the government's rules and protocols, issues began to arise. Employees had
to change from their usual routines on each flight, bringing additional patience and
hygienic measures to ensure their safety both inside and outside the plane.
Furthermore, the aforementioned personnel had to encounter health concerns because
they were serving various people during the epidemic, and the number of persons
impacted by the virus is continuously growing. Customers and guests who do not follow
safety rules, such as not wearing a proper face mask or not wearing a face mask at all,
are also a source of concern. Those who are anti-mask assert that they have the right to
decide whether or not to wear the mask. Their mental health is also affected by this
problem as a result of the stress and anxiety they are experiencing as a result of the
widely advocated idea of furlough from every area of the airline industry in order to
save money because their funds have run out. Employee layoffs and furloughs have a
significant impact on their lives, particularly for those who rely primarily on their jobs.

When the Covid 19 Pandemic arrived, it had a major impact on everyone, especially the
tourism and hospitality industries. As each airline's workers and attendants adjusted to the
government's rules and protocols, complications began to occur. Employees had to depart
from their typical routines on each flight, bringing extra patience and hygienic precautions to
ensure their safety both inside and outside the plane.

Case 2: issues about safety and security due to hijacking

 Some individuals believe that working on planes is equivalent to putting or allowing one
foot on the grave. As of this time, the second case focuses mostly on the 9/11 hijacking
scenario, which exploded the World Trade Center, putting countless lives at risk. The
issue in this case is the cabin and flight crews' safety and security on every flight. They
are terrified of losing their safety and security as a result of what has happened. They
are terrified that this scenario may repeat itself, endangering their lives, because
hijacking is a life-threatening event that can disrupt the flight as well as ambush or
murder passengers on board

How did the cabin crew handle the issues in both cases? If you were one of them, how
would you handle these issues?

In these issues, both cabin crew did their best and act professionally. They showed the Roles
and Responsibilities of a Flight Attendant which is to ensure safety, security, and service (the
comfort of passengers) for the duration of a flight. They also showed their skills as a flight
attendant like in the case no. 1 one of the biggest stressors for flight crews has been dealing
with passengers who don’t want to follow the federal mask mandate, but she still manage to
explain it well it shows how strong her stamina is, where it is one of the skills of a flight
attendant where they work long hours, deal with difficult customers, handle heavy goods
like luggage and service carts, and are usually on their feet. They'll need a lot of stamina to
make it through the entire flight.

While in the case no.2 the flight attendant showed her skill in terms of leadership, during an
emergency, flight attendants must assume command and make quick decisions/solutions to
unexpected problems that develop onboard, as well as escort passengers to safety. The
flight attendant calmly describes and gives information about what is happening inside the
airplane, She and the crew did the best they could until the end.

What are your recommendations for the airline management in addressing and/or
preventing such crises from happening?

A crisis is an unexpected occurrence or a group of situations might have a huge impact on

the capability of an organization to execute objectives that harms a company's business a
company's reputation and/or endangers the environment, a person's health, safety, and
well-being of staff, customers, or the public at large the general public If not treated
properly, in a timely and proper manner, A crisis may occur if it is not dealt with properly
become a tragedy or a catastrophe. Crises are regarded as unfavorable changes in the
security, economic, and political environments. Whether it's a political, social, or
environmental issue, events, particularly when they occur unexpectedly, without little or no
warning. Airline management must ensure not only the safety of their passengers but also
the safety of their crew, especially now that many of flight attendants suffer from
depression, anxiety, and stress because of the pandemic. Here are the following
recommendations;

Crew health precautions Airlines should offer crews with information and procedures to help
them avoid getting Covid-19 while on duty and down route in regions where local
transmission is prevalent. Those who flew during the crisis had significantly more clinically
significant anxiety symptoms, Fear of SARS-CoV2 infection might be a logical explanation.
