Question: How did the cabin crew handle the issues in both cases?

If you were one of them,

how would you handle these issues?

Answer:

In the first case, the fortunate cabin crews who were able to keep their job handled the issues of

the pandemic in a calm and professional way. They showed the Roles and Responsibilities of a

Flight Attendant which is to ensure safety, security, and service (the comfort of passengers) for

the duration of a flight. Despite the dangers of the unknown virus, the flight attendants were able

to face the issues fiercely and bravely for the sake of their families.

Mrs. Amirzadeh’s dilemma highlights one of the many difficulties of traveling by air during a

pandemic. A pressing issue where crew members must navigate a virus that still isn’t

completely understood and non-compliant passengers who put crew members’ health—and

jobs—at risk every day. As cabin crews are more at risk from COVID-19 than anyone else on a

plane, just by the nature of their work, the thought of being vulnerable to contracting the virus

and bringing it home to their families has been one of their many concerns. The flight attendants

mentioned in the study were also able to show their skills and dedication as a flight attendant. In

the first case, one of the biggest stressors for flight crews has been dealing with passengers

who don’t want to follow the federal mask mandate, but they still managed to explain it well. This

only shows how strong her commitment is, dealing with difficult customers, handle heavy goods

like luggage and service carts, working long hours on their feet, are only few of the struggles

that comes with the job.

For other flight attendants who were unfortunately furloughed because of the decrease in

passengers, they’ve experienced depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems

because of unemployment, lack of financial support and health benefits, and the uncertainties

that the pandemic brings forward. I am amazed at how the flight attendants in this study
responded to the struggles that they have faced during the pandemic. Both women have shown

exemplary attitudes, if I were one of them I can’t even begin to imagine how stressful this

situation is. However, life moves on, and as it does I will do my best to handle the problems that

I encounter calmly and rationally. As a future cabin crew I would handle it the same way like

how flight attendants in both case did their job gracefully. If I was a working crew member during

the pandemic, I will make sure that I follow protocols and be stern when warning passengers of

the mandates of our airline’s policies. It’s our responsibility as a flight attendant to keep all

passengers safe and ensure that they are comfortable in their flights. On the other hand, if I was

laid off, I will see this as an opportunity to explore other careers until I am allowed to fly again. I

will automatically be on survival mode because we all have bills to pay and we need to do

everything that it takes to survive the harsh realities of this world.

While in Case No. 2, the flight attendant demonstrated her leadership capabilities by

nonchalantly describing and providing information about what is happening inside the airplane

despite the fact that she is carrying a lot of weight. She and the crew did their best until the end.

It's also very inspiring that she chose to fight with a 50/50 chance of survival rather than sit back

and watch it happen with a 100% certainty of death.

As a potential cabin crew member, I would handle the situation the same way a competent flight

attendant would. Assume command and make quick decisions/solutions to unexpected

problems that arise onboard, as well as escorting passengers to safety, as it is one of your

responsibilities as a flight attendant to keep all things running smoothly and ensure that flights

are as comfortable and stress-free as possible for the passengers. Hijacking and dealing with

those in crisis on board a flight will continue to be issues, but it is the employees and airline

industry's commitment to investing in education and training of staff and applying all that in a

real-life situation that can make a significant difference in saving lives if the worst happens.
