INTRODUCTION
In general, cultures in the past had a tendency toward equilibrium over extended periods of time, and often did
not succumb to major changes unless forced to do so. However, cultural change did occur in the past, albeit
on a smaller scale than today. Cultural change refers to change in the values or beliefs of a culture that has
duration (even irreversible) and impact on that culture over many years. Cultural change can occur either
gradually or rapidly, depending on the source of the change. Anthropologists highlight innovation as one of the
greatest determinants of cultural change. Innovation can be in the form of a new technology, a new practice,
or a new principle that influences how members of society conduct their lives.
