Traversing begins with choosing and establishing the corners of the traverse (with at least 6
corners/points). These points are labeled as points A, B, C and so on. A chalk is used to mark
each corner. Also, a stadia rod is set at these points to serve as guides or markers during
sightings. After that, the party sets up and levels the transit over the first corner A to determine
the bearing or azimuth of course AB.
After setting up the points and instruments, the instrument man reads the distance and bearing
at point A in two repetitions, the first with the transit in direct position (A-B) and the second with
the transit in reversed position (B-A). Continuing on, the party performs a second measurement
back to the next corner sighted. The instrument is transferred to the next corner and repeats the
same process of determining the interior angle and measuring related distances. The procedure
is performed until all corners have been occupied.
