Vocabulary revision: topic cards
Teaching notes

These cards can be used in a variety of ways to revise key vocabulary for any language in
preparation for GCSE exams or with KS3 classes.

Suggested activities

1. Students work in pairs or threes and are given one set of cards (or selection of cards if
you have not covered all the topics) per group. The cards are placed face down in a pack.
The first student takes the top card and says as many words as they can (in the target
language) which relate to the topic on the card. Agree a set number of words as a target
(which can be varied to differentiate) and if they hit that number they can keep the
card. If not, the card is returned to the bottom of the pack and the next student in the
pair/group takes a turn. The winner is the student with the most cards.

2. Give each pair of students a set (or selection) of cards. Spread the cards face up on the
table so that the topics can be seen. Call out or show a word from one of the topic areas.
Students find the relevant topic card and race to hold it up. You could give a point to the
first pair in the class to hold up the right card or students could compete against their
partner to grab the right card first and win a point. Students should keep a tally of their
own points to find the ultimate winner.

3. Choose one card from the pack at random and call out the topic. Students race to write
ten words connected to the topic on a mini whiteboard. The first team to finish can share
their words with the class and wins the point.

4. Deal out one card to each pair or small group. Challenge them to find as many words as
they can, connected to the topic on their card, starting with different letters of the
alphabet, A–Z.

5. Display the topic cards around the room. Each student starts at a different card. Students
have a set time limit to write as many words for each topic as possible in the target
language. When the time limit is up, they have to move on the next card and write words
for that topic. The winner is the student with the most correct words in total.
