SLOTTING MACHINES
• Basically slotting machine is a vertical axis
shaper.
• The tool moves vertically rather than in a
horizontal direction.
• It has a vertical ram and a hand or power
operated rotary table.
• The stroke of ram is smaller in slotting machines
than in shapers.

PRINCIPAL PARTS OF SLOTTER
• Base
• Bottom most part.
• Made of Cast Iron. It supports column, tables,
ram, driving mechanism etc.

• Column
• It is made up of cast iron and it houses the driving mechanism.
• The vertical front face of the column is accurately finished for
providing ways along which the ram moves up and down.

• Ram
• It is provided to reciprocate vertically up and down.
• At its bottom, it carries the cutting tool.
• It is similar to the ram of a shaper; but it is more massive and
moves vertically, at right angle to the worktable, instead of
having the horizontal motion of a shaper.

• It is attached to bottom end of ram.

• Table
• It holds the work piece and is adjustable in longitudinal and
cross-wise directions.
• The table can be rotated about its centre.

• It is mounted on guide ways of bed
• Using saddle longitudinal feed is given.

• They are provided for rotating the table and for longitudinal
and cross traverse.

•Cross slide
It can be moved parallel to the face of the column.
The circular work-table is mounted on the top of
the cross-slide.

MECHANISM OF SLOTTER
• The base of the slotting machine is rigidly built to take up all
the cutting forces.
• The front face of the vertical column has guide ways for
Tool the reciprocating ram.
• The ram supports the tool head to which the tool is
attached.
• The work piece is mounted on the table which can be given
longitudinal, cross and rotary feed motion.
• The slotter machine can be used on any type of work where
vertical tool movement is considered essential and
advantageous.

• Various types of work holding devices are used
on slotter machine.
• 1. Vices
• There are two types of vices:
• (i) Plain - Plain vice may be bolted to the table of
slotting machine.
• They may be turned so that the faces of the jaws
are parallel with the face of the column.

• (ii) Universal
• Universal vices are particularly adopted for
holding work that is to be machined at a double
angle.
• They are mounted on swivelled bases that can
move through 360° in a horizontal plane.
Universal vices are particularly adopted for
holding small work on which work is to be done
on various points and different angles.

• Various types of clamps are mentioned
below:
• (i) Plain clamp
• (ii) Single finger clamp
• (iii) Screw heel clamp
• (iv) U- clamp
• (v) Double finger clamp
• (vi) Universal adjustable clamp

• 3) Chuck -
• Chuck is directly held on the table by some
means of clamping devices.
• There are two types of chucks used on
slotting machine, which are mentioned
below:
• (i) Three jaws chuck
• (ii) Four jaws chuck

• 4) Special Jigs and Fixtures -
• Special fixtures are used to hold castings of
irregular shape.
• These are designed especially for the
particular work to be machined.
• The basic idea to design jig and fixture is to
locate and support any type of work in a
correct manner with reasonably less time.

• 5) Rotary Table -
• The rotary table provides a convenient means
of cutting internal or external work.
• The indexing of rotary table can be carried out
to suit the number of slots being cut.
• The angle can be calculated by dividing
3600 by the no. of slot.

• 6) Indexing Head -
• The indexing head is to rotate a piece of work
through a certain number of degrees or certain
fractional part of a complete circle for the
purpose of graduating or machining the part.

OPERATIONS PERFORMED
• A slotter is a very economical machine tool when
used for certain classes of work given as under.
• (i) It is used for machining vertical surfaces
• (ii) It is used angular or inclined surfaces
• (iii) It is used It is used to cut slots, splines keyways
for both internal and external jobs such as
machining internal and external gears,
• (iv) It is used for works as machining concave,
circular, semi-circular and convex surfaces.

OPERATIONS PERFORMED
• (v) It is used for shaping internal and external
forms or profiles
• (vi) It is used for machining of shapes which are
difficult to produce on shaper
• (vii) It is used for internal machining of blind
holes
• (viii) It is used for machining dies and punches.
• Since a slotter works slowly. It has less use in
mass production work.
• It can be substituted by the broaching machine.

SLOTTER TOOLS
• Slotter tools when compared with the shaper
tools differ in their constructions.
• It differs from their applications of cutting with a
single point tool in so much that, instead of
cutting on a line perpendicular to its length, it
cuts parallel with its shank.
• To allow for such changed conditions the tool
shape is considerably modified.

SLOTTER TOOLS
• The cutting edge is formed on the end of the
tool so that it cuts when pushed endwise and
which puts the tool under compression.
• Slotter tools have front rake (100-120), no side
rake, and front and side clearance (50).
• The usual top rake angle of lathe tool becomes
front clearance angle for the slotting tool.
• Front clearance angle of the other single
pointed tool becomes the top rake angle of the
slotter tool.

SLOTTER TOOLS
• In the case of slotter tool, generally there is no
side rake.
• But side rake angles are given whenever it is
necessary.
• Tools need to be of large and rigid section, as
the tendency of the cutting is to deflect the tool
away from the work because it almost pushes
the metal off the piece being machined.

CUTTING SPEED
• The rate at which the metal is removed during
downward cutting stroke is called cutting speed.
It is expressed in meters / minute.

FEED

• Feed is the movement of the work per double


stroke.
It is expressed in mm.

DEPTH OF CUT

Depth of cut is perpendicular distance measured between


the machined surface and un-machined surface also.
It is expressed in mm.
