Chapter 1

Background of the Study

Education is a systematic process that enhances an individual's

knowledge, skills, and character, elevating their status in society. It plays

a vital role in improving one's quality of life and social standing choosing

a career path is a significant decision for students as it greatly influences

their future. High School students need to explore and consider their

post-secondary options for employment. Making the right career choice

can be challenging, as it depends on various factors, including personal

perspectives, available resources, and awareness of different aspects

related to the chosen profession. Students can utilize their knowledge

and abilities to gain the necessary experience and contribute to their

personal growth and societal well-being. Universities aim to grant

degrees as a recognition of educational achievement.

Choosing a senior high school strand is one of the most challenging

decisions that junior high school students will have to face. It is greatly

important because the strand they choose will serve as their training

ground before entering college. By understanding the factors and

considerations that influence students' track choices, educators,


policymakers, and parents can provide them with the necessary

information and guidance to make informed decisions.

Selecting the correct SHS strand is a critical decision for Grade 10

learners of Handumanan National High School as it greatly impacts their

future career paths. The importance of choosing the right track lies in

enabling students to explore their interests and strengths, thereby

enhancing their motivation and allowing them to excel in their chosen

field. While factors such as socio-economic status, parental guidance, job

opportunities, and personal interests may strongly influence students'

decisions, it is essential to acknowledge that aligning interests and skills

with the chosen track can lead to future employment opportunities. In

the local area, factors such as the influence of family and friends,

individual skills and abilities, and performance in junior high school

shape students' choices. Dissatisfaction may arise when desired tracks

conflict with financial circumstances or other life factors, such as

parental influence, as highlighted by (Vries) et al (2017). Understanding

these challenges is crucial for addressing the complexities surrounding

SHS track selection at Handumanan National High School.


The primary motivation of this research is to provide guidance to

Grade 10 learners in selecting the most suitable track for Senior High

School (SHS). By understanding the factors they should consider and

encouraging them to choose a track aligned with their interest and

preferences, this research aims to empower and motivate these students.

The benefits of this study lie in gaining insights into the main reasons

behind the selection of the right track in SHS. Choosing the right track

in senior high allows students to develop specialized knowledge and

skills, optimize their learning and personal growth, and pave the way for

their future career paths. The significance of selecting the right track

cannot be understated, as it marks the initial step towards achieving

personal goals and shaping one's future career.


Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand the different considerations of Grade

10 learners of Handumanan National High School in selecting SHS

Track. To conduct this study we need to know:

1. What is the profile of Grade 10 learners in Handumanan National High

School.

B. Sex

C. Age

2. What are the considerations of Grade 10 learners at Handumanan

National High School in selecting Senior High School Track?

3. What is the level of motivation of Grade 10 learners when they are

grouped according to.

A. Family income

B. Sex

C. Age
Hypothesis

H1: Family income is one of the main factors for students

consideration and motivation on choosing SHS Track.

H2: There is a significant relationship between family factors and

students consideration and motivation in choosing their Senior High

School Track.

Assumption

The survey questionaire will collect the details to determine the level

of motivation of grade 10 learners and what factors and consideration

influence them in selecting SHS Track.

We anticipate that Grade 10 learners may encounter difficulties in

selecting a Senior High School (SHS) track based on our assumption.

These challenges could include factors such as: financial instability, peer

influence, lack of motivation, concerns about future opportunities, and


reliance on advice from their families. We intend to conduct a survey to

collect data and gain insights into the level of motivation and the various

factors influencing Grade 10 learners in choosing their SHS track.

Theoretical Framework

This anchored to John Holland's Theory of Career Choice (RIASEC)

[Holland, 1997], which posits that individuals are inclined to select

careers that align with their personality types. According to this theory,

people tend to prefer jobs where they can interact with others who share

similar characteristics, utilize their skills and abilities, express their

attitudes and values, and engage in enjoyable problem-solving and roles.

Scope and Delimitation

This is a descriptive research which aims to define the consideration

and motivation of Grade 10 learners of Handumanan National High

School in selecting SHS track. The target respondents were the Grade 10

students of HNHS. The central purpose of this study is to understand


and to identify the different considerations and factors that Grade 10

learners at Handumanan National High School take into account when

choosing their desired track.

The researchers will conduct the data gathering through

questionnaires with the use of Google forms (G-forms) and face-to-face

interactions. This survey considers every aspect of student's personal

information that has an impact on choosing their SHS track such as

their family income, their gender and their age.

Significance of the Study

This study will not only yield data will be helpful to one person,more

so to the following groups of people.

(Student) in particular grade 10 learner student will be equipped

with what SHS track should take and they would know what should they

considerate to choose SHS track, it make them aware of the influence

that might affect their choices in selecting the right track of them.also to

verify those influence and use it it to decide the best track for them on

the other hand the study would motivate those grade 10 learner's to

choose the right track base on their interest.


(Parents) studying these research empowers parents to support and

advocate for their child's educational needs. Also, the SHS track helps

guide their child's preparation and explore opportunities.

(Teacher) the study will offer teachers, particular information to

guide the students choosing the right track. It may also approach

handling and SHS tracks equips teachers with the necessary knowledge

and tools to effectively guide, teach, and support student in their

educational journey.

(School administration) Senior High School is significant for school

administration as it enables administration to effectively implement

policies, allocate, resources, support students, and engage stakeholders.

According to research in place, it ensures the teaching and learning slow

as smoothly as possible, and lesson observations inform teaching

strategies to help children achieve as highly as possible. It promotes the

development of positive students in SHS track.

choosing the right SHS track lies in its potential to contribute to

academic development, practical, application, policy implications,

student engagement, empowerment, college and career readiness. Its

important to choose a SHS track that aligns with my interest and goals is
crucial for shaping my future. The SHS track i select can provide me with

the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue my dreams and build a

successful career. Its important to consider my own passions, strengths,

and aspirations where making this decisions.

doors for future researchers to refine and expand studies in relation to

selecting the right academic track. This many serve as a source of

information for selecting the right academic track.

Definition of Terms

Technical

Motivation is an internal process. Whether we define it as a drive or

a need, motivation is a condition inside us that desires a change, either

in the self or the environment. When we tap into this well of energy,

motivation endows the person with the drive and direction needed to

engage with the environment in an adaptive, open-ended, and problem-

solving sort of way (Reeve,2015).

Schwall, A.R. (2012). Defining age, Choronological age (time since

birth) is the most frequently used operationalization of the effects of

aging. However, researchers in various disciplines have expressed


dissatisfaction with the chronological age's inherent atheoretical nature.

Chronological age is essentially a measurement of time, not a refection of

age-related changes and development.

According to Ahmed et al. (2017), the choice of educational track for

students is significantly influenced by family income. Education is often

seen as an investment that requires financial resources. When students

attend school, they have to bear expenses such as books, transportation,

tuition fees, accommodation, and other related fees. Therefore, family

income becomes a crucial factor in career choices. In all likelihood,

students are more likely to select a track that their family can afford to

support. Otherwise, they may find themselves quitting in the middle of

the academic year due to insufficient resources. The cost of education

varies depending on the specific track or course. For example, pursuing a

medical course is generally more expensive than opting for an education

course.

According to Disha, (2020) Consideration involves deliberate reflection and

analysis, usually conducted over a duration, wherein one takes into account multiple

elements or aspects prior to making a decision or developing a viewpoint. It entails the

act of attentively contemplating and taking into consideration various pertinent factors

that could potentially influence a specific situation, action, or result.


Operational

Motivation in choosing the right track of SHS the people surrounds

me that made me feel blessed, and supported especially my circle of

family who always believe in my strength and capability. It motivates me

in all my doings and performances in school. It always in the side of

positivity and encouragement that whenever i fail, I can still cope up on

it in the next time

The consideration of age becomes crucial in determining the

developmental stage and maturity of grade 10 learners, as it has the

potential to impact their cognitive abilities, social interactions, and

emotional development. In our study, it is imperative to define the age

range of grade 10 learners in order to effectively conduct our survey. By

doing so, we can ensure that the gathered data is accurately

representative of this specific group of students.


Family's income is very important in terms of sourcing our daily

needs especially on my studies. The income of the family provides all the

expenses and must assist all my necessity in school. It also important

that my family has a stable source of income that can stand on my needs

in school such as school projects materials. school extra-curricular

activities, school outdoor activities, academic activities and so on that i

may possible to join/participate of.

Consideration the teach that i had chosen has always had it's own

purpose and reason , It has basis and proper examination to know that

you fit in life chosen track but somehow there is still a little issues on it,

considering all your skills, intelligence and capability. There is always a

consideration in all decisions.
