Lewis Matheson Method

✓ Two important steps:

1. Operating equations for each component

2. Equilibrium concentration equations

MC Distillation: Problem

Solution:
F=D+W
100 = D + W
A balance on Toluene gives us:
0.3× 100 = 0.10 D +0.6 W
30 = 0.1 (100-W) + 0.6 W
W = 40 Kmol
D = 60 Kmol
MC Distillation: Problem
Component xf xD Xw

Benzene 60 90 15

Toluene 30 10 60

Xylene 10 0 25

A balance on Benzene gives us:

0.6 × 100 = 0.90 × 60 + xWB × 40
xWB = 0.15 = 15 Kmol
Thus, xWX = 0.25 = 25 Kmol
MC Distillation: Problem
Now Reflux ratio = R = Ln/D = 4

Thus, Ln = 4 D = 4 × 60

Ln = 240 Kmol

And Vn = Ln + D = 240 + 60 = 300 Kmol

Feed is entering at boiling point and all feed at initial is considered to fall in liquid
form downward

Lm = Ln + F = 240 + 100 = 340 Kmol

And Vm = Lm – W = 340 – 40 = 300 Kmol

MC Distillation: Problem
Thus obtained values are,

F = 100 Kmol, D = 60 Kmol, W = 40 Kmol

Ln = 240 Kmol, Vn = 300 Kmol, Lm = 340 Kmol, Vm = 300 Kmol

Now we have to develop TOE,

yn = 0.80 xn+1 + 0.2 xd

ynb = 0.80 xn+1 + 0.18

ynt = 0.80 xn+1 + 0.02

ynx = 0.80 xn+1

MC Distillation: Problem

Now we have to develop BOE,

ym = 1.13 xm+1 - 0.133 xw

ymb = 1.13 xm+1 - 0.02

ymt = 1.13 xm+1 - 0.08

ymx = 1.13 xm+1 - 0.03

MC Distillation: Problem
Using the equilibrium equation i.e.

Using the BOE:

ymb = 1.13 xm+1 - 0.02
ymt = 1.13 xm+1 - 0.08
ymx = 1.13 xm+1 - 0.03
MC Distillation: Problem
Using the equilibrium equation i.e.

Using the TOE:

ynb = 0.80 xn+1 + 0.18
ynt = 0.80 xn+1 + 0.02
ynx = 0.80 xn+1
