I. Objectives, Standards, and Assessments

A. Standard(s)
3.4.C1: Recognize design is a creative process and everyone can design solutions to problems.
S3.A.2.1.1: Generate questions about objects, organisms, or events that can be answered through
scientific investigations.

III. Subject Matter Explanation

A. Prerequisite Skills and/or Prior Knowledge

Students will learn about Keva blocks on Friday. They will need to understand each piece of the
data sheet and have basic knowledge of how to stack the blocks to build a tower. They will need
to understand how a scientist thinks to get the best results.
B. Key Vocabulary and Content

IV. Implementation

A. Introduction
“Friends, today we are going to have a very fun challenge. Remember last week when we were
talking about how a scientist solves a problem? We talked about how they observe what the
problem is, and then they plan an experiment and then they have to do the experiment and
communicate the results.”
1. Hook/Activation of Prior Knowledge
“Today, I have a problem. I need to reach the ceiling, but I am very short. I need a tower that will
let me reach the ceiling.”

2. Setting Today’s Objective

“I need you all to work together to build the best, sturdiest, tallest tower you can.”

B. Development
- Divide students into groups
- Have students take out their data sheet from Friday
- Hand out groups of Keva blocks
- Have students plan their tower within their group
- Students may start building their tower
- They will have three trials to build their tower
- Students will draw their trials each time
- They will then talk with their group about how they can make their tower better
- While students are building, walking around asking what their plan is, how they
came up with it, etc.
-Asking questions to make sure they are on track and working together
- After students have built their tower with three trials and drawn their pictures, we will
discuss the conclusion questions
- We will discuss the questions together and answer them as groups, based on
how each group’s towers went.
C. Closure
- We will complete conclusion questions and discuss how we got our best tower
- We will observe each other’s towers
- Clean up time
D. Differentiation and Accommodation
- Students who speak Spanish will have work translated for them
- Students are working in pairs or groups so those who struggle with reading and writing have
someone to help them
V. Post-Lesson Self-Assessment (Upload this file separately to D2L after your lesson)

A. Report of Students’ Success in Terms of States Objectives

(Reflection on student success written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for students
who failed to meet acceptable level of achievement)

B. Personal Reflection
