CURRICULUM CONTEXTUALIZATION
(Reflection)

The School Learning Action Cell helps us teachers in developing mastery in different
competencies we need to impart to our students. In participating in SLAC, I learned new teaching
strategies and approaches and classroom management. The concept of contextualization,
localization and indigenization are significant and relevant for us teachers of 21 st century despite of
the trend of technology that would help us facilitate learning these three key terms would be much
vital for making the teaching and learning meaningful.

As an educator we need contextualization to complement the curriculum content and instructional

strategies relevant to learners as stipulated in Deped Order no. 35, s. 2016. We must allow learners
to discover meaningful relationships between abstract ideas and real- world applications. Our
learner in must be exposed to discovering learning, reinforcement, and modelling, as well as
problem solving. While teaching is progressing, we as a teacher provide ongoing feedback that
promotes further learner interaction with the content. This will enable the learners to be engaged
and motivated to do well in the class.

I’ve learned from the discussant that the degree of contextualization may be described and
distinguished into Localization and Indigenization: Localization is the process of adapting and
relating the content of the curriculum and the teaching and learning to local condition,
environment, and resources where students can relate easily. We teachers will start the lesson by
using the examples in the locality and making instructional materials from the local materials are
just ways on how to localize, for example if our subjects are all about baked products and we
wanted our students to relate on the taste of cake but we don’t have an actual cake, we can use
lemon square cupcake which is the available baked products in our locality/community. On the
other hand, Indigenization involves the enhancement of the curriculum framework, curriculum
design, and learning standards of subject areas, guided by the standards and principles adhered to
by the national curriculum, Indigenization benefits everyone; we all gain a richer understanding of
the world and our specific location in the world through awareness of indigenous knowledge and
perspective.

When we use Localization and Indigenization we are already contextualizing. When you localize, you
use information and materials in your learner’s community while when you indigenize, you enhance
competencies in the curriculum, the resources, and the teaching learning processes so that it will suit to
the context of learners’ community. Contextualization will help learners to have deeper understanding

of the lesson or topic they are studying; it also helps make learning more relevant for learners and
encourage them to take an interest in their schoolwork. Contextualizing can help learners to develop
their critical thinking skills that they can utilize while they are studying and when they become
professionals.

Understanding Different Types of Assessment

(Reflection)

Educators must have deeper understanding on the different types of assessment. It is significant to
us teachers to provide an authentic, reliable, measurable, and valid assessments for our diverse
learners who have diverse interest and learning style.

Assessments must be aligned with what is the competency that we need to measure, it can be done
in formative, which occurs both before and during the learning process, and summative, which
occurs at the end of key segments in a learning cycle or the end of the learning process. These two
types of assessment must be construct within the standards so it can be reliable, measurable, and
valid especially the summative. Summative assessment crafted after writing the Table of
Specification. This will be a basis for the competencies of learning that will be measure, the test
items that must be aligned within the number of hours the topic had been taught to the learners.

In conclusion, crafting of assessments is very critical; the degree of authentic evaluation of learner’s
knowledge and skills will depend on its types, construction, and content. So, we must be careful as
possible in choosing and crafting.

IMPLICATIONS OF LOW LEVELS IN NUMERACY”

(Reflection)

Only few learners find mathematics subjects fun and exciting. Mathematics is one of the subjects
that is undeniable our learner finds difficult to enjoy and love as a subject. They say basic
mathematical foundation such as addition, substruction, multiplication, and division are enough to
learn because some complex topics like polynomials, calculus, geometry and so on are not
necessarily applicable in a real-life setting, this is the mindset that somehow made me think the
reason why there are acquired low level competency.

Low numeracy can affect learners’ confidence and self-esteem. During our collegial discussion, I
realized a lots of insights from the discussant, she shared her own experience that a numerate
student is not just a student who can count 1-2-3, but it is a student who can internalize the
concepts of mathematics and can critically think how to solve a certain problem which may lead
them to hands on quantifying, estimating, measuring and use the visible knowledge. We can use

contextualization in fostering higher level competency in mathematics, we can integrate those
things in our locality that can make the concept of certain topic in math more interactive and
relatable.

In conclusion, we teacher should think different strategies where students can understand and
applied simple mathematical problem. Teachers should always integrate mathematics in their
subjects without developing anxiety to our students. By integrating mathematics, it will help
learners to enhance or improve their numeracy level.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL USING ICT”

(Reflection)

“Technology is just a tool. It can give learners a voice that they may not have had before”. – George
Courses.

This passage really hit me hard as a teacher who really wanted to deliver a meaningful experience
to my students. It is true that Technology is just a bare minimum to aid teaching and learning, we
cannot guarantee that learning would be that effective using a certain technology because our
students are diverse, which means they had different learning styles, some approach using
technology may be applicable to some students and some find it really distracting, that is why it is a
big challenge to us teacher to carefully choose an applications/tools to be incorporated in teaching
and learning process. We must keep in my mind that technology can persuade and stimulate
interest and learning but not applicable to all learners and to the topic we are going to deliver.

In conclusion, we teacher still the best facilitator of teaching and learning process and there is no
such high technology that would replace us. We must keep the faith in the advantage of life long-
learning, so we can have a wide knowledge about edtech so we can use smartly and wisely to help
us dispense and facilitate our student’s discovery of meaningful learning experiences.

Adolescent Health Education and Practical Training (ADEPT)

(Reflection)

Adolescent Health Education and Practical Training (ADEPT) is one of the significant
trainings that the students must engage in, this will give them knowledge and awareness to keep
their physical, emotional, and mental health in good sound as despite of some factors that they are
experiencing due to the very complex stage so called adolescence. On the other hand, this training
would also be helpful to us teachers, as we aim to create a harmonious, safe, gender sensitive, and
motivating environment for our learner when they are in school premises. This will guide us on
how we are going to address and approach our troubled students, these students may experience
abuses (mental, emotional and physical) and inadequate healthcare that may cause students not to
attend to school regularly, unacceptable attitudes towards fellow students and teachers and worst
thing is to harm their own self. We can also inject the learning from this training into our handled
subjects to enlighten our students and instill awareness with them.

In conclusion, we teacher play a big role in our student well-being aside from giving them quality
education. We should be aware with the proper health care for adolescent and with the symptoms
of suffering abuses mentally, physically, and emotionally so we can help them out, guide them with
what is the right thing to do to surpass it before they go into even worst possible scenarios.

Characters of a Good Work Ethics

(Reflection)

“If all good work ethic characteristics align in candidate, a hiring manager can be confident that
they will find a way to succeed-no matter their talent level.” This is my favorite quotation that was
delivered by the discussant; it talks a lot with the ethics rather than talent/intellectual, which
somehow ethics level has been overlooked basis especially when we are referring to our favorite
teacher, we prefer those who have top talent but only few of us considered the teacher who show
up every day and reliably get things done that make the quality of education efficient and effective.

The good work ethic characteristics are the needed qualities that must be observed and carry out
by a teacher especially teaching is considered as one of the noble professions because this
profession takes a lot of patience, dedication, and passion to cater the quality education. Ethics play
an important role on how we are going to have a good relationship with the learners, co-teachers,
and administrators. It will help us to influence learner to be more responsible with their duties and
responsibility as a student as they may see as a role model. What we do always reflect on our
student’s attitude towards us especially if we are their adviser.

“Scope and Strategies used in using Reading Assessment Tools”

(Reflection)

The fundamental skills such as reading and writing are the skills that the students must learn, because it
is the foundation of the wide and complex knowledge and skill they may learn. But unfortunately, in the
Philippines one of the top problems is the non-reader students, it is the big challenge to teachers to
promote learners who can read and comprehend.

As a teacher, I must understand the scope and strategies used in using Reading Assessment tools, so I can
be able to address the problem in non-reader students. This will guide me on how I will approach the
non-reader students during my discussion, and how I will use the reading assessment tools so I can be
able to provide an authentic assessment to those students whose under dependent, independent and
frustration.

In conclusion, as an educator our higher ups, somehow equip us with the needed support to address the
challenges in the educational system, so we can be able to create a community that is literate and ready
to conquer the global market.

CONTENT AND PEDAGOGY

(Reflection)

As a teacher we must be familiarized with the content and pedagogy of the education because it will lead
us into the body of information and skills, teaching approaches, and strategies that will support the
learning.

One of the important insights I had learned from the speaker in content and pedagogy is the use of
contextualization during teaching and learning process. In contextualization we can be able to localize
and indigenize. Localization refers to the process of relating learning content specified in the curriculum
to local information and materials in the learners’ community. for example, if our subjects are all about
baked products and we wanted our students to relate on the taste of cake, but we don’t have an actual
cake, we can use lemon square cupcake which is the available baked products in our locality/community.
On the other hand, indigenization refers to the process of enhancing the curriculum competencies,
education resources, and teaching-learning processes in relation to the bio-geographical, historical, and
socio-cultural context of the learners’ community we can ask our learners to interview the chieftains in
the villages of the learners and asked for stories of origin depicting their culture and after they had an
interview, that will be the time that you we will discuss and facilitate the identification of elements of
short story.

In conclusion, we teachers must not stop on learning so we can be able to understand more about our
content and pedagogy of the education to ensure the quality of education that make our student job
ready and can be able to demonstrate a global market competence.
