LESSON 49 (Reading 10) TIME 1020-1120
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, most of the pUpils will be able:
1. GUess the meaning of Unfamiliar words from clUes provided by other known words and by context
2. Use with some sUpport familiar print and digital resoUrces to check meaning
LEARNING OUTLINE
Pre-lesson:
Play a dictionary race, give pUpils words to race to find in the dictionary. Choose words from the
texts in PUpil’s Book, pp.48-49 bUt not those in the box on page 48.
Lesson development:-
1. Pupils brainstorm and think aboUt different jobs.
2. Tell the pUpils the text title (UnUsUal Jobs) and show the pictUres from the PUpil’s Book pp.48-49.PUpils tell
their partner what they think the texts will be aboUt. Ask pUpils if they can think of other UnUsUal jobs.
3. Explain to pUpils that they will read one of the foUr texts in the PUpil’s Book. PUpils work in pairs.Give each
pair a copy of one of the foUr texts. Ask pUpils to read their text and find oUt which UnUsUal job it talks
aboUt – they check their predictions from Step 3.
4. Write the words from the box in the PUpil’s Book, p.48 on the board. Ask pUpils to look in their text and
find one or more of the words. They shoUld try to work oUt from the context what the words mean.

5. Have pUpils write a definition for their word(s) in their notebooks in pairs. (CBA)
6. Hand oUt the dictionaries and ask pUpils to find the word(s) and compare the dictionary definition
7. with their own. They shoUld check their Understanding as they do this. If yoU don’t have access to enoUgh
dictionaries, pUpils can refer to the PUpil’s Book, p.137, where the words are listed anddefined.
8. RegroUp pUpils into groUps of foUr to six so that there is at least one pUpil with each text in eachgroUp. PUpils
peer-teach the new words to their groUp and tell the groUp how they worked oUt the meaning of the
word(s).
9. PUpils work either in their new groUp or in their previoUs pair. PUpils read all foUr texts to do thematching

Post-lesson:-
Play a game to review all the words from this lesson to check that pUpils have understood theirmeanings from
the peer teaching.

Lesson development:-
1. PUpils read oUt the qUestion in the Learningbto learn box. Give pUpils 30 seconds to find theanswer on
page 49 of their pUpil’s book.
2. PUpils practise skim reading to find the information to complete the table. (Activity 1)
3. Using the worksheets, ask pUpils to complete the gapped sentences. They can work inpairs or
individUally. These may be, for example: (CBA)
4. Have pUpils, individUally, write at least one more gapped sentence for each of the foUr people inthe texts in
their notebooks.
5. PUpils exchange their sentences with a partner, who completes them. (21st CA)

Post-lesson:-
To review the content of the texts, have pUpils do Activity 2 in the PUpil’s Book, p.50 withoUt re-reading the texts.

Pre-lesson:
PUpils in pairs answer qUestions in Think! p.42.
Lesson development:-
1. Read aloUd 5 or 6 definitions of school sUbjects in the box in Activity 1 e.g. In this sUbject yoU draw and paint.
Sometimes yoU make models; In this sUbject yoU do calcUlations with nUmbers and money. PUpils gUess the
school sUbject from the box. (HOTS)
2. PUpils listen for ten school sUbjects and gUess the meaning of words they don’t know. PUpils do
p.42 and 43 Activity 1, CD1.38.
3. PUpils do Activity 2. PUpils read qUestions again and think of answers. With a partner, they answer
qUestionnaire orally. Find oUt which pairs have same answers to qUestions 1, 3, 4, 8. Explain answers are
opinions. Write on board 2, 5, 6, 7, 9. Check answers then say these arefacts. Ask: Do yoU know the answer
to 10? Which qUestions are easy to answer, opinions or facts? (CBA)
4. Explain pUpils are going to be creative. After drawing sUbject pictUres, pUpils show them to a
partner who identifies the sUbjects. PUpils then label their drawings. (21st CA)

Find oUt pUpils’ three favoUrite sUbjects. Say a sUbject and pUpils pUt hand Up if they like it. Do atally on board.
