only one free writing task is assigned, it will be graded using a scale ranging from 0 to 10.
However, when two writing tasks are set (one free and the other guided or semi-guided) the
mark for the free task will range from 0 to 6 points, and the one for the guided or semi-
guided task from 0 to 4 points. A score of 0 is given when:
the candidate does not write anything ,
the candidate only copies the prompts or the topic,
the candidate writes in a language other than English,
the candidate writes about a topic different from the one assigned.
Scorers should reduce the overall mark if the writing product is too short to respond to the

[1] There are 632 million internet users in China and 24 million of Chinese children are thought to
be addicted to the internet. Desperate parents are trying hard to help their children by sending them to
addiction treatment centres.
[2] Chen Fei, one of these children, is nervous.
His parents had told him that they would be travelling to
Beijing for the summer, but that would not be a holiday.
He has found himself in the Internet Addiction Treatment
Centre in Daxing, south of Beijing. In a small room
inside the centre, while her son waits outside, Chen’s
mother is crying as she explains to a psychiatrist why
they have travelled more than 600 miles from their home.
“Our son’s addiction to the internet is destroying the
Internet Addiction Treatment Centre family,” she says. “About two years ago, he started going
to cybercafés to play online, but we gave it little thought.
He was a good student and we knew that he had to relax. Yet the sessions became longer and he began to
play every day. His schoolwork suffered, so we tried to convince his teachers and classmates to distance
him from that scene. Six months ago, he completely lost control and started spending more than 20 hours
in front of a computer.”
[3] “We can’t control him anymore. We want him to understand what is happening to him, to get
better, and for this nightmare to be over,” his father adds. It is decided that Chen will be committed to the
centre for a period of three to six months – perhaps longer if he does not respond positively. He will
undergo a therapy treatment designed by Dr. Tao Ran, a psychiatrist and colonel in the army, who
combines military discipline with traditional techniques to overcome addiction. A doctor explains to
Chen’s parents that their son will have no access to any electronic device, no contact with the outside
world, and he will have to follow all orders. “It will be a difficult process,” the doctor warns.
[4] “Internet addiction leads to problems in the brain
similar to those caused by drug consumption,” Dr. Tao says.
“But, generally, it is even more damaging. It destroys
relationships and harms the body. All our patients have
eyesight and back problems and suffer from eating disorders.
If someone is spending six hours or more on the internet, we
consider that to be an addiction. It’s true that a month of
treatment costs a lot, but most parents consider it a necessary
financial sacrifice,” he adds. Teenagers taking medicine at the Centre
[5] Dr. Tao Ran wants his treatment to become standard practice for internet addiction. He claims
a success rate of 75% since 2008. There are already about 300 clinics in China that adopt elements of his
model – mainly the military discipline.

[1] The winner of the 2016 Global Teacher Award is a
Palestinian teacher called Hanan Al Hroub. She grew up
in a Palestinian refugee camp near Bethlehem and she
teaches refugee pupils herself. She specialises in
supporting children who have suffered from violence. She
was awarded the Global Teacher Prize for her excellent
contribution to the teaching profession. The finalists for
this prize included teachers from India, Kenya, Finland
and the United States. The award was announced at an
awards ceremony in Dubai, with a video message of
congratulations sent by Prince William. He spoke of the
great responsibility of teachers and how they could
influence and shape a young person's life for the better.
[2] Pope Francis announced via a video conference that Hanan had won the $1 million teaching
award. “I would like to congratulate the teacher Hanan Al Hroub for winning this prestigious prize
because of the importance that she gave to the role of play in a child's education. A child has the right to
play. Part of education is to teach children how to play because they learn how to be social through games
as well as learn the joy of life,” Pope Francis said.
[3] Hanan became a teacher after her children and husband
were shot at on their way home from school. This incident had a
negative impact on her children’s behaviour and personality. She
was left alone to support them. With no help from the
educational authorities, she started inventing games at home and
inviting the neighbours’ children to participate. Gradually, the
children's behaviour and grades began to improve. Now she
teaches using play at school to help pupils reject violence and
tension. In her speech at the ceremony, she told the audience that
teachers could change the world.
[4] “I’m proud to be a Palestinian female teacher standing on this stage. I accept this as a win for all
teachers in general and Palestinian teachers in particular. I tell all teachers that our job is humane and its
goals are noble. We must teach our children that our only weapon is knowledge and education," she said
after receiving the award. She says she will spend the prize money on supporting her students by creating
scholarships to encourage excellent ones to be teachers.
[5] The award was created by the Varkey Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by Dubai-
based education entrepreneur Sunny Varkey. It aims at improving the standards of education for
underprivileged children throughout the world. “I hope that this teacher's story would inspire those
looking to enter the teaching profession. My hope is that children from around the world will watch this
ceremony and think about what their own teachers do for them,” said Mr Varkey.

[1] Hassan went to university in Mohammedia.
After graduation, he began looking for a job. Like many
other young Moroccans, he started work in a bilingual call
centre for a couple of reasons. “I want to practise my
communication skills and also work in a prestigious call
centre,” he said. Hassan works for an airline company call
centre. His task at the centre consists of receiving calls
from passengers who are inquiring about tickets and flights.
“My task is to receive all incoming calls and answer
inquiries about flights from a computer system. I also make
reservations and process clients’ payments,” he added.
[2] Apart from working for 45 hours per week, Hassan described the difficulties he encounters
on his daily routine as follows: “As a beginner, the four-week training I had wasn’t enough to fully
understand all the details of the job. The other problem, which many of us in the centre suffer from, is
the huge number of incoming calls that we have to process everyday.” He added: “All the answers I
give to clients are available on the computer system.” Furthermore, when asked if he considers his task
to be repetitive, he answered with a big “YES.”
[3] Recently, IBM (an international computer company) launched a new computer program
called “Watson Engagement Advisor”, which can be used in call centres. It can answer calls as it
understands plain English and can be operated by a human agent. The program is designed to replace
human agents in dealing with customers.
[4] When asked about the challenges of dealing with huge numbers of incoming calls, Hassan
said: “You try to be as friendly as possible, keeping a positive tone, but sometimes you feel annoyed,
bored and you can easily get angry.” Such qualities are of human nature; however, Watson
Engagement Advisor would keep calm all the time and answer all questions easily.
[5] But when asked if he is for or against the idea
of introducing Watson in Moroccan call centres, Hassan
was very hesitant: “I’m against this idea. I think it will
cost a lot of money. There are some clients who make
the reservation online through the website; still they call
to make sure that it’s been done. Moroccans do not trust
technology yet; they still need to hear the human voice.”
Watson wouldn’t need any health insurance nor ask for
days off. It can work day and night without complaining
or fighting over the phone with clients. Watson threatens
Hassan and other young agents’ source of living. It’s true TAOUFIQ ELBIAD

technology, machines are making their way to replace elbiadtaoufiq@gmail.com
humans.

[1] Ibn Sina, also known as ‘Avicenna’, was indeed a true polymath
with contributions in many fields such as medicine, psychology,
pharmacology, geology, physics, astronomy, chemistry and philosophy. He
was also a poet and an Islamic scholar and theologian. His most important
contribution to medical science was his famous book known in the West as the
Canon. This book is an immense encyclopaedia of medicine. It comprises the
entire medical knowledge available from ancient and Muslim sources.
[2] This great scientist was born late in the tenth century in the village
of Afshana, near Bukhara which is also his mother’s hometown. His father,
Abdullah, was from Balkh which is now part of Afghanistan. Ibn Sina
received his early education in his hometown and by the age of ten he learnt
the Quran by heart. He had exceptional intellectual skills which enabled him at
the age of fourteen to do better than his teachers. During the next few years, he
devoted himself to the study of Islamic laws and principles, philosophy and natural sciences. Ibn Sina also
studied the work of Aristotle on metaphysics but couldn’t fully understand it because of his young age. It
was only after reading a manual by the famous philosopher Al Farabi that he found a solution to this
problem.
[3] At the age of sixteen, Ibn Sina dedicated all his efforts to learning medicine and by the time he
was eighteen he became a famous doctor. During this time, he was able to cure Ibn Mansour, the King of
Bukhara, of an illness which no other doctor could cure. The King wished to reward him for this
achievement, but the young doctor only asked for permission to use the prestigious royal library.
[4] When his father died in 1002, he left Bukhara and moved to Jurjan,
where he lectured on logic and astronomy. There, he met his famous
contemporary Al-Biruni. Later, he travelled to Rai and then to Hamadan, where
he wrote his famous book the Canon and also cured King Shams al-Daulah of a
severe illness.
[5] From Hamadan, he moved to Isfahan, where he finished many of his
greatest writings. Shortly afterwards, his health started to deteriorate, so he
travelled less often. He spent the last twelve years of his life in the service of Abu
Jaafar, whom he accompanied as his doctor and scientific consultant. He died in
June 1037 and was buried in Hamadan.
[6] Besides his monumental writings in medicine, Ibn Sina also
contributed to mathematics, music and other fields. His findings inspired later
scientists in various fields of knowledge and he is still considered a valuable
reference to many researchers.

[2] In Germany, a third of all children are born to immigrant families, and the issue of integration
has become an urgent political concern. Heike Ullrich, the head of women‟s football federation in
Germany, said “football is for everybody, men, women, black, white, all races and religions. Everyone
should have a chance to come in contact with the ball. It unites people.”
[3] Lira was five when her family arrived in Germany and settled in a refugee centre. She said that
she felt rejected by some locals as she went to and from school, hearing mocking remarks like „gypsies‟
and „go back where you come from.‟ At the age of six she joined a club in Giesenkirchen and later played
near Monchengladbach.
[4] “I was the only girl. At first the boys didn‟t accept me. But when they saw I could play football,
they decided to play with me. Later they were fighting about which team I should play with,” she said.
One day her father attended a match to watch her brother and by accident learned that his daughter had
also taken up playing football. His response was surprise but not disapproval. “He told me I was very
good. Now he is my biggest supporter,” she said.
[5] In 2007, Lira played as a substitute when Germany won the World Cup final over Brazil. A
year later, she scored both of Germany‟s goals in a victory over Japan for the bronze medal at the Beijing
Olympics. Her present club Turbine Potsdam won the European women‟s Champions League title in
2010. “Playing football is what helped me integrate. First, I learnt the language. Later, I learnt a lot about
the culture and the cities,” Lira said.
[6] “If Lira is a star in the next World Cup, maybe girls who wear the jerseys of their favourite
players on the men‟s national team will start wearing those of the women‟s national team players,” said
Ulf Gebken, a German specialist in sport and social integration.

[1] Kapour is eight years old and works with his father in a shop in a village near New Delhi. Every
morning, while carrying bags of vegetables to the shop, he runs into children wearing school uniforms. He
feels ashamed at not being in a school uniform, carrying books instead of vegetables. Kapour is one of
India's five million school dropouts. These are children of migrant workers who come to the Indian capital
and end up living in slums. Many of them can’t afford to send their children to school. Others are unable to
provide birth certificates or proof of residence for their children, which are necessary for admission to
school. Besides, there are some families, such as Kapour’s, that need their children to help around the house
and look after their younger siblings.
[4] The children are proud because the school bus comes specially for them. It has changed their lives
and given them hope. After joining the bus, Shivam, aged 9, was very happy with his new life and would run
home to tell his mother everything he had learnt. Lately, he has been leading the class in chanting the Hindi
alphabet. His mother was so impressed that she persuaded other mothers to send their children, too. Shaheen,
who has spent a whole year attending the school bus, is one of the 200 children who have successfully joined
primary schools. Her life has been transformed since she joined the school bus." I couldn't count and I
could write only a few words of Hindi," she said. "Now I do multiplication and division, and I know some
English, too." What she had learnt there helped her to pursue her studies at the local primary school without
any difficulty.

TEXT:
[1] Facebook is a social utility that helps people communicate more efficiently with their friends,
families and colleagues. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was born on May 14, 1984 in New
York. He went to high school at the age of 15. There, he excelled in Latin, so he moved to Phillips
Academy to study Latin classics. After Phillips
Academy, he enrolled at Harvard University. As a
student, he continually worked on computer projects
from his dormitory room. He got into trouble because he
used private and personal students’ information to create
an online directory. Consequently, the computer services
department wrote a complaint to the administrative board
to take measures against Mark. This didn’t prevent him
from working on his project. He built a programme to
help the workers in his father's office communicate with
each other and he created a version of the game called
Risk and a music player named Synapse.
[2] Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook from his Harvard dormitory room on February 4, 2004. The
idea for Facebook came from his days at Phillips Academy which, like most colleges and preparatory
schools, had a long tradition of publishing an annual student directory known as "Facebook". It contained
photos of all students, professors and staff. After Facebook had become a success on his own campus, he
and his roommate, Dustin Moskovitz, began spreading it to other colleges. In 2005, more than 30 university
students were able to use Facebook. That year, Mark and Dustin moved to California and set up an office
there. Although they originally intended to go back to Harvard at the end of the summer, their business
flourished and they stayed on the west coast. Today, Facebook has four buildings in California.
[3] Facebook is now the second most visited site on the Internet. Zuckerberg was offered $1 billion to
sell the company, but he said no. His refusal to sell it out made people talk. Critics are comparing Facebook
to Friendster, the first social networking website. In 2002, Friendster was offered $30 million by Google,
and the offer was turned down. On December 2, 2009, Facebook claimed that it had attained over 350
million users.
[4] A movie based on Zuckerberg and the founding years of Facebook, called The Social Network, was
released on October 1, 2010. The film star Jesse Eisenberg played Zuckerberg in the movie. After
Zuckerberg was told about the film, he responded, "I just wished that nobody made a movie of me while I
was still alive." The film is based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich and won
the Golden Globes award for Best Picture on January 16, 2011. Producer Scott Rudin thanked Facebook and
Zuckerberg "for his willingness to allow us to use his life and work as a metaphor through which to tell a
story about communication and the way we relate to each other.”

Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955 in a family having rich
business, political and community service background. His grandfather was
vice president of National Bank and his father was a lawyer. Bill strongly
believes in hard work. He also believes that if you are intelligent and know
how to apply your intelligence, you can achieve anything. From childhood,
Bill was intelligent, ambitious and competitive. These qualities helped him
to attain top positions in the profession he chose. In school, he had an
excellent record in mathematics and science.
Bill‟s parents noticed their son's intelligence and decided to send him to
a private outstanding school, where he was first introduced to a computer. It was a very important decision in
Bill‟s life. Bill and his friends were very much interested in computers and formed "Programmers Group" in
late 1968. In the next year, they got their first opportunity in Information Sciences Company where they were
selected as programmers. So, they started making money although they were still students.
Bill and his close friend Paul Allen started a new company of their own named Traf-O-Data. They
designed a small computer to measure traffic density. From this project, they earned around $20,000. In 1973,
he left home for Harvard University. There, he almost forgot about the world of computers because he spent
many nights studying one of the toughest mathematics courses. Bill and his friend Paul remained in close
contact even though they were away from each other. They would often discuss new ideas for future projects
and the possibility of starting a business one day. At the end of Bill‟s first year at the university, Paul came
close to him so that they could work on some of their ideas. That summer, Paul kept on pushing Bill for
opening a new software company.
Within a year, Bill dropped out of Harvard. Then, he formed Microsoft. Bill's vision is: "A computer on
every desk and Microsoft software on every computer". Bill is a visionary person and works very hard to
fulfill his vision. His belief in high intelligence and hard work has put him where he is today. Microsoft is
good competition for other software companies and Bill will continue to crash his competitors. His powerful
beliefs have helped him increase his wealth and his monopoly in the industry.
Bill is not a greedy person. In fact, he is quite a giving person when it comes to computers, Internet and
any kind of funding. He visited Chicago's Einstein Elementary School and donated a total of $110,000. He
offered computers, and provided internet connectivity to many schools. Also, Bill donated $38 million for the
building of a computer institute at Stanford University. Bill plans to give away 95% of all his earnings when
he is old and grey.
