Subject/Grade: Science 7 Lesson/Date: Nov 6 Time: 12:45pm-1:34pm

Stage 1: Desired Results

GOs: Students will:
● Illustrate and explain how human needs have led to technologies for obtaining and
controlling thermal energy and to increased use of energy resources
● Describe the nature of thermal energy and its effects on different forms of matter, using
informal observations, experimental evidence and models
SOs: Students will:
● investigate and interpret examples of heat-related technologies and energy use in the
past
● trace linkages between human purposes and the development of heat-related materials
and technologies
● explain how heat is transmitted by conduction, convection and radiation in solids,
liquids and gases
● compare heat transmission in different materials
Learning Students will:
Intentions ● Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between heat and temperature
● Explain the concept of thermal energy and how it relates to heat and temperature
● Recognize and describe the three methods of heat transfer: radiation, conduction and
convection

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Formative ● Observation Summative ● N/A
Assessment ● Questioning/discussion Assessment

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior to ● Prepare slideshow Resources: ● Science Focus 7 textbook
Lesson: ● Prepare handout ● Visual aids/slideshow
● Article and handout
Content/Description
Introduction:
● Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about heat and temperature. Encourage them to
share their thoughts and ideas
● Explain the today’s lesson in about exploring the concepts of heat and temperature and how they are
related
Body:
Learning Activity 1: Heat and Temperature Definitions
● define heat as the transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler one
○ give examples
● define temperature as the measure of how hot or old an object is
○ give examples
● discuss the differences between them
● ask students to predict which of the surfaces presented will be warmest or coldest when
touched
● Discuss how thermal energy of materials can affect their temperature
● Introduce the three methods of heat transfer and explain each method briefly
Transition
Learning Activity 2: Reading and worksheets
● Read the article as a class and give the remainder of class time for students to work
independently or in groups to complete the accompanying worksheet
Subject/Grade: Science 7 Lesson/Date: Nov 6 Time: 12:45pm-1:34pm
● circulate the classroom and assist students as necessary
Consolidation:
Point to Next Class:
● more time will be given in class tomorrow to review the material learned today, and to
finish up the worksheet
