ADIONG, NORHAFIDA MIL STEM 12 – AL ZUHR

Knowledge is created and disseminated in all forms and formats. Media and information
increase every day and it becomes so abundant that it can be found anywhere, anytime especially
in the booming era of data and information explosion. Becoming media and information literate
individuals will test our patience on how we deal with information and misinformation. It
includes a certain level of respect towards those who need and request it. Respect for information
need means we allow each and every one to express their ideas, opinions, and expressions fully
without any judgment or prejudice. MIL teaches us to use information and media content in an
ethical, efficient, and effective manner.
Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is a “combination of knowledge, attitudes, skills,
and practices required to access, analyse, evaluate, use, produce, and communicate information
and knowledge in creative, legal and ethical ways that respect human rights” (Moscow Declaration
on Media and Information Literacy, 2012).
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines
it as the "set of competencies to search, critically evaluate, use and contribute information and
media content wisely; knowledge of one’s rights online; understanding how to combat online hate
speech and cyberbullying; understanding of the ethical issues surrounding the access and use of
information; and engage with media and ICTs to promote equality, free expression,
intercultural/interreligious dialogue, peace, etc." (UNESCO, 2016).

PARAPHRASED
Knowledge is formed and distributed in various formats. The massive usage of media and
information is increasing every day to the point it becomes an integral part of our daily lives.
However, in using the platforms, we should be able to distinguish media manipulation and signs
of penetration of the social media given by terrorists or criminal networks. To become media
literate, you should be competent enough in using different technology devices. But to be able to
do that, you should know the ethics of how a certain individual should act and allow others to
express themselves without judging them.

According to Moscow (2012), Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is the merging of
logic, attitudes, and practices to enable access, analysis, evaluation, use, production, and
communication of information and knowledge in much more creative, legal, and ethical ways that
respect the human rights

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO)

defines it as the “capabilities to check, estimate, and provide information and media content
effectively; logic of one’s right online; comprehending how to the online works and cyberbullying;
comprehending the moral issues circulating the usage of information; and enable in using media
and ICTs to cultivate equality, free expression, intercultural/interreligious dialogue, peace, etc.”
(UNESCO, 2016)
