TOPIC: DESIGN ANALYSIS AS REQUIRED BY
PEC-2017.
ABSTRACT:
Design Analysis is one of the par t of the Electrical Plans and
Specification on Philippine Electrical Code 2017. In response to this
consideration, the basic of the Design Analysis preparation was
presented and the participant will be able to know the following:
TOPIC: DESIGN ANALYSIS AS REQUIRED BY
PEC-2017.

1.) Requirement of the Electrical Permit?

2.) What is the contents of the Electrical Design Analysis?
3.) Procedure for preparation of Design Analysis.
4.) Sample Design Analysis.
LETTER FROM PRC
I- REQUIREMENT OF THE ELECTRICAL PERMIT?
Requirement for Electrical Permit: Signature and Submittals. [ Art.
1.2.1.2- PEC-2017)

A.)The Electrical Permit shall include the following minimum

information:
1.)Applicant
2.) PEE who sign and sealed electrical Plans and specifications.
3.) Licensed Electrical Practitioner (REE/RME) who is in-charge of
electrical works.
4.) Building Owner.
5.) Lot Owner
6.) Building Official.

B.) Five (5) sets of complete electrical plans and specifications

signed and sealed by PEE.

PLANS AND SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

[ART. 1.3.2.1]
A.) Location and Site Plans
B.) Legend or Symbols
C.) General Notes and / or Specifications (General notes and /or
Specification, written on the plans or submitted on separate
standard size sheets.)
D.) Electrical Layout. (Floor plan showing location of equipment and
devices, and their interconnection wiring.)
E.) Schedule of loads. ( Schedule of Loads in tabulated form)
F.) Design Analysis. (Design analysis shall be included on the
drawings or shall be submitted on separate sheets of standard
size.)
G.) One Line Diagram
II- WHAT IS THE CONTENTS OF THE ELECTRICAL
DESIGN ANALYSIS?
Design Analysis shall be included on the drawings or shall be
submitted on separate sheets of standard size, and shall show
the following:
1.) Branch circuits, sub-feeders, feeders, bus ways, and service
entrance;
2.) Types, ratings, and trip settings of overload protective devices;
3.) Calculation of Voltage Drops
Vdrop = (2)I Z for Single Phase ; (√3) I Z for Three Phase
4.) Calculation of short circuit current for determining the
interrupting capacity of overcurrent protective device for
residential, commercial and industrial establishment.

*** The full compliance of the above requirements are already

included on the Load Schedule of the Project.
A.) The calculation of the short circuit current can be patterned on
the example shown on PEC-2017 Example D14.
B.) Wires and cable impedances, resistance and reactance can be
based on Table 10.1.1.9 Alternating-Current Resistance and
Reactance for 600 Volt Cables – Phase, 60 Hz, 75⁰C – Three
Single Conductor in Conduit. –PEC-2017.
C.) Impedances of the Transformer can be referred to Table IEEE
**** However if the Short Circuit Capacity of the Utility is not
available, the Available Short Circuit Current in Example D14
–PEC-2017 can be utilized.
5.) Protection Coordination of overcurrent protective devices
6.) Arc-Flash Hazard Analysis to determine the required personal
protective equipment (PPE) in other than dwelling place-(see
Appendix H for PPE)

FPN: No.1 This analysis is not required for dwelling units but
required for service equipment and other electrical equipment
not par t of the individual dwelling units of residential
condominiums and individual detached dwelling units.
FPN: No. 2 Arc-flash hazard analysis required is intended for
concerned parties to be informed and made aware of the
importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and its type
for the flash hazard risk category determine by the analysis.
Further overcurrent protective devices coordination coupled with
flash hazard analysis can reduce the severity of PPE needed but
is not required under this arc-flash hazard analysis.
FPN: No. 3 IEEE Std 1584-2002, Guide for performing Arc-Flash
Hazard Calculations provides guidelines for Arc-Flash Hazard
Analysis.

ANALYSIS

GENERAL NOTES
1.) Design calculation/criteria was based and referred to Philippine
Electrical Code I (PEC)- 2017.
2.) Supply Voltage from the Utility is coming from the proposed 1-
25kVA 1P, 7.62kV/Single Phase 3 wire (P+N+E), 230V, 60Hz.
Distribution Transformer
3.) All electrical works and installation herein shall complies with
the provision of the latest edition of the Philippine Electrical
Code and regulations and in accordance with the regulations of
the national and local authorities having jurisdiction concerned.
4.) Minimum size of wires is 3.5 mm2 and minimum size of conduit
is 20 mm dia. PVC trade size respectively.
5.) ALL MATERIALS USED ARE ALL BRAND NEW AND OF
APPROVED TYPE APPROPRIATE FOR BOTH LOCATION AND
INTENDED USE.
6.) ALL ELECTRICAL WORKS AND INSTALLATION IS UNDER THE
DIRECT SUPERVISION OF A DULY LICENSED REGISTERED
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER.
A.) MINIMUM INTERRUPTING CAPACITY
Available System Fault = Ifl of the Transformer/Impedance
= (25kVA/.23kV) = 108.695A/0.012 =9,057.916A
=9.058 kA
Use Min. of 10kAIC interrupting capacity on the Main Service Equipment, Main
Circuit Breaker of Panel Board and 5kAIC on all outgoing breakers.
B.) VOLTAGE DROP (VD) CALCULATION
* Voltage Drop shall not exceed to the required value as specified
on Article 2.15.1.2(a)(3) FPN No. 2 and Article 2.10.2.2(a)(1)
FPN No. 4 of Philippine Electrical Code – 2017 (PEC-2017).
Sample and procedure of calculation will be presented below
and the rest of the calculation will be presented on tabular form
for easy reference.
VOLTAGE DROP SAMPLE CALCULATION
Feeder from Service Entrance (SE) to PB (Panel Board)
Size of Feeder 2-60.0mm2 THHN Length = 20 Meters
From PEC-2009 (Table 10.1.1.9)
Resistance and Reactance of 60.0mm2 THHN Copper Conductor
R= 0.10 Ω/305m X = 0.043 Ω/305m
Total Resistance and Reactance of 20 meters Feeder from SE to
PB:
R= 0.0066 Ω X = 0.0028 Ω
Therefore:

VD = (2) I x Z = Volts

=(2) (125A) x √(0.0066)2 + (0.0028)2

= 1.7845 Volts.

%VD = VD/230 x (100%)

= 1.7845/230V x 100%

= 0.7759%
C.) CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION:
1.) The Interrupting Capacity of the Main Circuit Breaker on the
Panel Board shall be at the Minimum of 10 kAIC and to be
cascaded to 5kAIC on the outgoing breakers.
2.) As shown on the Voltage Drop Calculation, the voltage drop
complies the required value as specified in Article 2.15.1.2(a)(3)
FPN No. 2 and Article 2.10.2.2(a)(1) FPN No. 4 of Philippine
Electrical Code (PEC) 2017.
3.) Earthing System: TN-S System is recommended
-A TN-S System has a separate Neutral conductor and protective
earth conductor within the supply to the building. They remain
separate throughout the whole installation.
