Task 4: Reflection (Individual) - (10%)

Write a reflection on the implementation of your simulated teaching that has been carried out in
Task 3 in 350 words. The reflection should focus on, for example, on the issues, lesson
objective(s), strengths, weaknesses and suggestions for improvement. Consider how the
simulated teaching session has enhanced your understanding of the approaches and issues in
the Teaching of Grammar in a 21 st Century Primary ESL classroom. Support your key points
with reference to relevant literature.

Acknowledgement

First and foremost, I would like to extend our deepest praise to God who has given me
the patience, strength, determination, and courage to implement this task. This project is a
collaborative effort of many people. To begin with, my utmost thanks and gratitude goes to my
Teaching of Grammar in the Primary ESL Classroom (TSLB3083) lecturer, Dr. Kanakambal
Velusamy for imparting me with her wealth of knowledge, valuable guidance, and experience.

My appreciation and thanks are also dedicated to all of my friends for their helpful
insights, cooperation, and stimulating comments. I would also like to express my apologies for
any mistake and shortcoming in carrying out this task. To end with, I am truly delighted, for this
task would bring benefits to others. Thank you.

Reflection

I had conducted a simulated teaching of a 30-minute lesson for year 5 with my group
members. We chose Aiman’s lesson plan which focused on present continuous tenses and I
carried out the practice stage. The experience taught me a lot in improving myself as a future
teacher and it widened my perspective in conducting a fruitful lesson.

My strength in the simulated teaching was the ability to arouse pupils to be interested
and engaged in the learning activity. I had assigned a pairwork activity and they had to play an
‘Act It Out’ game. The activity was interesting as physical movements were involved so they
were not bored and they could understand the learned verbs better as they acted out. It was a
meaningful learning as they actively participated and enjoyed the activity.

Still, I also have a weakness in the simulated teaching. I provided instructions related to
the activity and the way I delivered the instructions to the pupils was lacking a lot. This
contributed to them being confused and unclear regarding the flow of the game at first. To
overcome this issue, I had to repeat the instructions many times and I even asked the pupils to
paraphrase what they had to do to assess their comprehension about the activity. Unfortunately,
time was wasted in making sure the pupils understood the instructions instead of the actual
learning activity.

Nevertheless, I could take advantage of the opportunities and this experience to improve
my teaching skills in the future teaching-learning lesson. I need to improve my technique in
providing instructions to avoid any misleadings. The instructions should be explained in a simple
manner and easier clarification should be provided so pupils could understand better. The
biggest threat in improving my teaching skills is probably the lack of trust in myself. Therefore, I
should improve my confidence and demonstrate it to gain pupils' trust in my teaching and to
continuously motivate them.

Overall, the simulated teaching helps me in identifying which aspects that I need to focus
on. There is a lot more to improve and explore, as well as sharpening the teaching skills.
