Activity 2: Know Me!
Example 1. Determine each of the following sequences as Arithmetic Sequence or
Geometric Sequence. If the sequence is arithmetic, give the common
difference; if geometric, give the common ratio.
a. In the sequence 3, 7, 11, 15, 19
Say, d = 7 - 3 = 4; or d= 11 – 7= 4; or 15 – 11 = 4 or 19 – 15 = 4
So, the common difference ( d ) = 4. Therefore, the sequence
3, 7, 11, 15, 19 is an Arithmetic Sequence.
b. In the sequence 5, 20, 80, 320
Say, r = = 4; or r = = 4; or r = =4
So, the common ratio ( r ) is 4. Therefore, the sequence 5, 20, 80, 320 is
a Geometric Sequence.
Exercises 2.1
Directions: Determine whether each sequence is Arithmetic, Geometric, or
neither. If the sequence is arithmetic, give the common difference; if geometric,
give the common ratio. Then, give the next term of the sequence.
