2.1 Abstract
This experiment was done to investigate the operation of the Vernier height gauge. It is like
forthright vernier caliper but a vernier height gauge is used to measure heights and depths with
greater accuracy. Additionally, it contains a vernier scale and the main scale. The top and bottom
sides measuring jaws are parallel to the base thus in return it can measure the required
parameters. Using this gauge, the midpoint of any solid object can be found by measuring the
height and dividing it in half. If a particular height is to be marked on the object its scriber can be
used. Some Type of error like Parallax error can also be present thus distorting the readings.

2.3 Introduction
In many industrial jobs where some measurement is required, we may face different natures of
values for measuring like depth, breadth, height, and length so we may need a special type of
instrument for each of these measuring values. Vernier height gauge is a special type of vernier
instrument which is used to measure heights of different engineering objects up to high precision
and accuracy during many industrial jobs where measuring process is required. Vernier Height
Gauges use the main scale and a Vernier scale to provide a greater resolution and fine adjustment
of the measured value. These gauges can have imperial (inch) or metric (mm) scales or both.
Height Gages Features include. Very precise and reliable.

2.4 Procedure
1. Measure the temperature at which readings are taken. Preferably the temperature should be
20°C
2. Calculate the least count of the gauge and check the scale for any zero error.
3. The Vernier height gauge and datum of an object from which measurement is being made, be
placed on a very flat surface.
4. To measure the height, place the measuring end of the scriber firmly against the object. The
force should not be too high to damage the tip of the scriber.
5. Measure the main scale reading and the Vernier scale reading. The height can be found by the
following formula.
Height from the Datum= Main Scale Reading + (Vernier Scale Reading x Least Count)
6. Now to mark the center of the object, divide the height by 2 7. If the center height comes out
to be a, b, Use the following formula to get the number of divisions to be moved on the Vernier
gauge to get the required center height.
No. of divisions=a +b/Least count
7. Move the scriber to the no of divisions got from the above formula. Use fine tuning screw to
move scriber exactly to the required height.
8. Use a scriber to mark the center of the object concerning the datum.
9. To inscribe a graduation line on an object at a given height. Use steps from 7 to 9 in the
procedure.

2.6 Results and Discussion

In this experiment, the use of the Vernier height gauge was studied. It was used to find out the
height and mark the part with the scriber of the vernier height gauge at 38.33mm and at half of
the width at 12.6 mm thus the midpoint was marked. It is useful equipment for engineers as there
are various parts whose height is required, and markings are required at different heights so it
can easily do using the Vernier height gauge. It is operated similarly to a Vernier caliper. The
main scale reading is noted and the division of the vernier scale coinciding with the main scale is
observed and then multiplied by the least count and finally added to the main scale reading in
turn giving us the final reading.
The main disadvantage of Vernier altimeters is that their readings are highly dependent on the
skill of the operator, which will cause parallax error. When observing the reading on the main
scale, the resulting human error can cause the observed value to fluctuate. The accuracy would
be according to its smallest number, which is 0.02 mm. Therefore, it is much more accurate than
a standard caliper, which has the smallest number of 0.1 mm. Thus, based on the calibration and
condition of the equipment, only a small amount of error was present, but the observed reading
was extremely accurate. Some other sources of error also include a worn needle, an unstable base
creating a wobble, and the slide arm not being parallel to the base.
This experiment showed that the Vernier altimeter is a very reliable, accurate and affordable tool
for measuring vertical dimensions. Vernier height gauges are also used to draw lines on machine
tables and surface plates. The main type of error in this apparatus are Wobbling, Instability,
Magnification of setup errors and Magnification of instrument errors. The main disadvantage of
this height gauge is used to measure only small objects. The vernier height gauge readings are
highly dependent on the ability of the operators, and its accuracy is limited by the Vernier scale.

2.7 Conclusion
This experiment was done to find the height of different objects. It is very accurate and precise
measuring instrument with the Least Count of 0.02mm. It can also be used to mark on the objects
like for marking the object center.
