Biodiversity and Evolution

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students can:

a) define what is evolution;

b) differentiate two types of evolution; and
c) discuss the theories of evolution.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Biodiversity and Evolution
Reference: Internet, Books,
Materials: Power Point Presentation, Laptop, Picture chart, and YouTube.
Process skills: Observing, Describing, Classifying
Time: 1 hour

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
 Greetings
 Prayer
 Checking the Attendance
 Recalling the previous lesson

B. Motivation
The teacher will show 3 scrambled words that pertain to evolution. Then let
the student guess the correct words. The students that got the answer
correctly will get a reward.

C. Presentation/Discussion
The teacher will present the topic for the day and post the lesson
objectives.

 Define what is evolution;

 Differentiate two types of evolution; and
 Explain the occurrence of evolution.

a) Activities
The teacher will divide the class into two (2) groups. Each group will be given
pictures to assess. Then one representative will present their insights about
the picture.

b) Analysis
The teacher will play a YouTube video presentation. After that, she will ask
them some questions. https://youtu.be/X-XtZyHcck4
1. What type of evolution does the picture you choose imply? Justify.

c) Abstraction
The teacher will discuss:
 What is evolution?
 What are the two types of evolution?
 What are the theories of evolution?

d) Application
The teacher will divide the class into two (2) groups. The teacher will assign
the topic based on students’ group number. The teacher will provide a
cartolina and marker. The students will brainstorm about the words that
connected to their given theories. Out of those words that they have been
brainstormed, they will create a webbed map.
1. Theory of Lamarck
2. Theory of Darwin

sheet of paper.

3. Which of the following statements best describes the Theory of Natural Selection?
A. Developed characteristics of parents can be passed on to offspring.
B. Organisms develop necessary structures to survive in a given environment.
C. Organs that are not used may fade, while organs that are constantly utilized
may develop.
D. In nature, the organism with necessary characteristics may survive, while
those with weaker traits may not.
4. Natural selection states that
A. nature selects the variations within a species that are most useful for survival.
B. fitness gives organisms the ability to survive but not to produce fertile
offspring.
C. a change in a species occurs over time
D. all of the above
5. The following statements describe evolution EXCEPT
A. Evolution is continuous
B. Evolution refers to a change
C. The world is stable and unchanging
D. The mutation causes evolution only when it becomes heritable
6. Which of the following statements does NOT describe Darwin's theory of natural
selection?
A. The members of a population of the organisms will strive.
B. Populations tend to replicate in minimal numbers.
C. Members of a population have genetic differences.
D. Some members of inhabitants have adaptive behaviors.
7. Who is the proponent that states that organisms change in response to their
environment?
A. Charles Darwin
B. Jean de Lamarck
C. Alfred Russel Wallace
D. Thomas Henry Huxley
8. It is an increase in similarities among species derived from different ancestors as
a result of similar adaptation to similar environment?
A. Evolution
B. Fossils
C. Theory of Need
D. Convergent Evolution
9. What theory states that a parent animal could pass on their traits and
characteristics to its offspring?
A. Theory of Need
B. Theory of Natural Selection
C. Theory of Acquired Characteristics
D. Theory of Evolution
10. He suggested that changing environments leads to changes in the use or disuse
of a body part/organ.
