The graph below shows the number of overseas visitors to three different areas in a
European country between 1987 and 2007.

2
The line chart details statistics about foreign travellers to three types of tourist destinations in
an unspecified nation in Europe from 1987 to 2007. Overall, all categories witnessed an
upswing with the most significant growth being seen in the number of tourists to the lakeside
areas.

The coastal region welcomed the highest level of alien sightseers in the first year, at 40,000.
Despite dipping to about 35,000 five years later, it recovered rapidly and consistently to
approximately 76,000 in the final year.

Regarding the visitors to the mountainous attractions, this figure rose moderately from 20,000
in 1987 to 30,000 in 1997. Subsequently, it documented a period of stability until 2002,
followed by a rise of nearly 7,000 by the end.

Finally, starting at the lowest result of 10,000 in the beginning, the number of overseas tourists
to the lakes surged to 40,000 by 1997. In the next five years, it increased more sharply to a
peak of just over 75,000 which surpassed the coast, before dropping quickly back to second
position with 50,000 by 2007.

Question: Some countries invest in specialised sports facilities for top athletes but not for
the average people. Is this a positive or negative development?

ANSWER:
Many nations allot a large sum of money on athletic amenities for their elite sportspeople
rather than the general public. From my perspective, while there are admittedly a few benefits
this trend may confer, this is still an overall negative development to society.

The foremost reason for my belief is that this investment is exorbitantly expensive. Given that
governments only have a limited budget to spend on many different sectors, they may have to
reduce their spending on other more important areas of interest such as healthcare or national
defence. For example, there was a protest in Korea against a bill to divert monetary resources
allocated for funding universal education to prepare professional athletes for the Asian Games.
Thus, this reformation can significantly polarise a nation.

A further counterargument for my opposition is that normal citizens will have less space for
exercise. This is because expensive areas designated for high-performance athletes often
consume the land that would have been used for public purposes. Consequently, people in inner
city regions or less developed suburbs who have limited access to open space will find it
difficult to do physical activities, aggravating the problem of modern sedentary lifestyles.
Nonetheless, one pronounced benefit of this development is that it can bring accolades to a
nation. If their sportspeople can access top-level gyms and related amenities, they can develop
their innate talent to the fullest. As a result, they can improve their athletic performance as
well as reduce the risk of injury, thus having more chances of winning a medal in an
international competition. Countries like America or China are an example of having
facilities par-excellence for their most skilful participants to maintain their top rankings in
every Olympic Games.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that directing the state treasury in

building functional sports centres for world-class players is more concerning for the
community because of the budget deficit and a lack of training areas for the public. However,
it is justifiable that this practice can help a nation to raise their profile on the global stage. (344

The graph below shows the percentage of workers in 5 different European countries with
a day or more illness absence from 1991 to 2001.

7
The line chart illustrates the rate of employees who took at least one day of sick leave in
different European nations from 1991 to 2001. Overall, while the proportion of workers who
were absent by sickness in the Netherlands and Sweden increased over the given period, France
had a reverse trend. Additionally, the UK and Germany remained fairly constant during the
period examined.

France and the Netherlands started the period around 5%. One year later, the rate of workers
with illness absence in the Netherlands increased by approximately 0.5%, before plummeting
to just over 4% in 1996. The figure then recovered gradually to about 5.4%, being the highest
among the five nations. Furthermore, after standing at around 5% for the first two years, France
witnessed a plunge to 3% by 1999, followed by a plateau for the rest of the period.

Turning to the remainder, the proportion of laborers with sick leave in Sweden remained nearly
stable at roughly 3% from 1991 to 1995, after which it ascended significantly to about 4.7%
by 2001. Both the UK and Germany experienced almost no change throughout the period, with
the former being around 2.5% and the latter being relatively smaller at approximately

Question: In order to learn about the way other people in the world live, it is better for film
and video records than written documents. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
ANSWER:

In the course of studying about cultures worldwide, many assert that motion picture
documentaries are a more effective method than written materials. Personally, I only partly
agree as each approach has its own merits that compensate for the deficiencies of the other.
On the one hand, video clips provide a better overview and are more appealing for learning.
Primarily, the audience can perceive the broad perspective on the topic. Owing to the
commonly short duration of videos, the essential aspects of the subjects are condensed into a
single film, which helps individuals to comprehend the broad picture in a short time period.
Moreover, this form of material likely enhances learners’ comprehension of the subject as it
facilitates visual graphics, which assist the audience to visualize the matter in a vivid manner.
For instance, an Asian can easily understand the lifestyle of a Western country by watching
video documentaries.

On the other hand, written accounts tend to offer learners a more in-depth knowledge and a
high level of accuracy. Firstly, while an overall picture can be obtained clearly via motion
picture materials, readers can gain a deeper understanding through books. This is because
written language often documents comprehensive and extensive knowledge, which contains
detailed explanations of the subjects that learners seek to explore. Additionally, written texts
provide authentic information regarding civilizations since many of them were produced by
actual witnesses, rather than mere researchers. To illustrate, archives from ancient
dynasties around the world were documented by their respective historians.

In conclusion, many argue that films and videos are superior approaches for learning about
human lives around the world. I somewhat agree with this notion since they can enable viewers
to acquire a broader overview and improve their imagination over the subject, whereas written
records may provide more accurate insights into a topic of interest. (303 words)

The charts below show the percentage of time working adults spent on different activities
in a particular country in 1958 and 2008.

11
The two pie graphs detail statistics about the timetable of employed adults in an unnamed
nation from 1958 to 2008. Overall, most activities recorded a higher rate of time allocation
except for bedtime and spending time with loved ones which both saw a downswing. Moreover,
people in this country spent more time at work than any other pursuits.

Performing their work duties, having a sleep and going out with friends and relatives
contributed to the majority of time spent by employees in this country. In 1958, they allocated
a minimally higher proportion of time at the workplace than sleeping, at 33% and 32%,
respectively. While the former increased by 9%, a 7% reduction was seen in the percentage of
the latter in 2008. Meanwhile, accompanying friends and family members for entertainment
dropped from 19% to 6% during the recorded period.

Concerning other activities, downtime at home accounted for 8% at the beginning before
increasing to 13% by the end. Similarly, time allotted for other hobbies and sports activities
also rose, but more slowly, from 6% to 8%. In contrast, starting in 1958 at the lowest result of

Question: It is observed that in many countries not enough students are choosing to study
science subjects. What are the causes? And what will be the effects on society?

ANSWER:
In many parts of the world, there is an inadequate number of students who are interested in
studying science as their major. This essay aims at providing the main reasons for such a
tendency as well as illustrating how our society is affected as a result.

There are two underlying reasons why not enough students aspire to study science courses.
Firstly, this phenomenon is attributed to the challenges in majoring in the subjects themselves.
In order to understand and thrive in science majors that are based on complex theories
and reproducible experiments, learners are required to have high cognitive
ability and commitment, or otherwise it can be intensely daunting to continue. Secondly,
with the low employability of some scientific disciplines such as physical sciences, students
are discouraged to pursue them as a career when choosing their area of study. In the last
decades, increasing unemployment rates among graduates in physics and geology have been
reported.

This growing trend is going to have serious social repercussions. The inadequate number of
key science experts can deteriorate people’s well-being. A case in point is the poor quality of
healthcare services due to the physician shortage, especially during the Covid-19 period,
causing preventable deaths amongst mild cases. Another consequence because of the shortage
of workers in scientific fields is fewer major breakthroughs and inventions will be discovered.
Consequently, stagnant scientific productivity can hinder development in certain sectors like
economy, agriculture or education.

To sum up, the deficiency in students taking science subjects takes roots from the difficulty
involved in studying sciences and seeking relevant employment opportunities after graduation,
and I believe that this phenomenon has a number of negative implications including decreased
public health and a sluggish economy for the public and its country as a whole. (293 words)

day.

The bar graphs compare the proportion for males and females of an unspecified nation who
participate in and how much time they spend daily doing four household duties. Overall, the
percentage of both genders doing housework corresponds with the average minutes for these
tasks, with cooking being the most dominant figures in each chart. Additionally, a higher share
of men are involved in house repairs and pet care, whereas the opposite is true for cleaning and
cooking.

Regarding the involvement of each sex in housework, over 80% of women cook, moderately
higher than men at 60%. Similarly, the proportion of females cleaning the house, at about 62%,
is 12% higher than that of males. In contrast, while approximately 23% of men spend time for
pet care and just under 18% of them do house maintenance, the corresponding figures for
women are 20% and nearly 10%, respectively.

Turning to the time allocated on each task, women perform over 80 minutes for cooking and
about 70 minutes for cleaning, compared to men with 60 and roughly 45 minutes for these
chores, correspondingly. While both genders share an identical amount of time for their pets at

Question: Some people think that governments should ban dangerous sports, while others
think people should have freedom to do any sports or activity. Discuss both views and give
your own opinion.

ANSWER:

There are those who hold the belief that the authorities should impose prohibitions on these
sports, while others are against this opinion. I believe that the freedom to participate in any
sports activities is a matter of choice and should not be interfered with.

The proponents of this trend may argue that people who take part in adventure sports are more
likely to be exposed to injuries or fatalities. This is because these activities are often associated
with extreme conditions such as weather or complex terrain. For example, mountain climbers
tend to scale in remote geographic locations where medical assistance may not be readily
available in case of emergency. Therefore, due to all the risk elements pertaining to action
sports, outlawing this practice is a feasible measure to mitigate the life-threatening issue to
members of the society.

Nonetheless, I would argue that prohibiting people from practicing these sports is illogically
unrealistic and may even violate the unalienable right of human beings. Realistically, many
popular sports carry a certain degree of risk even in the presence of protective gear such
as muscle strain or concussions in American football. However, the government will unlikely
ban them because of their profitability and popularity. Moreover, a regulation to ban extreme
sports can lead to much controversy in public in terms of human rights. Hence, an
individual’s freewill toward playing dangerous sports activities should be upheld rather than
being forbidden.

In conclusion, people may support banning dangerous sports due to the high vulnerability to
accidents of the participants; nevertheless, I contend that this policy is unfair, and sportspeople
should have full autonomy to play any ones and activities as they wish. (276 words)

Task 1: The world health organization recommends that people should eat five or more

females in the UK by age group in 2006.

20
The bar graph provides the rate of men and women in the UK who included at least five
servings of fruit and vegetables into their daily diet in 2006, divided by age cohorts. Overall,
there was a general trend of increasing fruit and vegetable consumption with age which peaked
at the 55-64 age group for both genders. Additionally, the proportion of females who reached
the goal was higher than that of males in most categories, except for the 75 one.

Regarding men, the proportion of residents aged 55-64 consuming five or more portions of

Question: Some people think that if a country is already rich, any addition in economic
wealth does not make its citizens happier. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your
answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

ANSWER:

It is often believed that increased financial benefits in a developed country will

not necessarily result in more fulfilling lives for its residents. I totally disagree with this notion
as there are various merits of this that can positively impact citizens’ happiness.

The main reason for my disagreement is that further economic prosperity can provide benefits
to society. At first, this can provide the government with additional opportunities to enhance
the living standards of its community through the increased tax income from citizens. This
can include funding for education, healthcare and infrastructure, which improve the life quality
of future generations. Moreover, the increased financial capability can be used to address
greater societal problems. Profound research into complex global problems, such as climate
change, poverty, and inequality can be granted to develop solutions. Consequently, a greater
sense of purpose and meaning may be achieved by individuals, knowing that their wealth is
utilized for a beneficial influence on the world.

Further support for my view is the improved financial strength also offers personal benefits.
One justification is that it can provide inhabitants access to unique and exotic experiences that
may not have been possible with their current level of wealth. For instance, traveling to remote
destinations or trying new hobbies. These experiences provide them with a deeper sense of
self-awareness and personal growth. Furthermore, increased wealth can facilitate citizens with
more flexibility in their lives. It allows professionals to opt for jobs that are less extensive since
their financial burden is lightened. This increased flexibility can lead to greater job
satisfaction and a better work-life balance, which can positively impact overall happiness.

In conclusion, while many argue that the enhanced wealth in a rich nation does not lead to
increased happiness among its citizens, I strongly oppose this viewpoint. I believe it can
provide residents with the resources to contribute to society as well as access to new
experiences and flexibility, which positively affect their well-being. (325 words)

Regarding the countries with an upswing, Lusumalla dominated this category in both 1990 and

by 12 to 80 vehicles in 2000. However, Brazil and Jordan more than doubled and tripled to 135
and 157 vehicles respectively in the same year.

In contrast, the three remaining countries had different trends, and Bahama and Chile
experienced a drop in motor vehicle figures throughout. The number of vehicles per 1,000
Bahamian people saw a fall from 235 to 187, while that of Chile fell more slowly from 62 to
60 vehicles. On the contrary, Cambodia was the only country remaining the same with only 1

Question: Technologies have changed the way children spend their free time. Do you think
the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

ANSWER:
The development of technology has altered the manner in which young people allocate their
leisure time. While this development provides minors a source of extensive knowledge as well
as an incentive to study, I believe these merits will likely outweigh the drawbacks to their
wellness.

The foremost benefit of advanced technology is that it provides them with an abundant source
of knowledge. Students nowadays can use their free time to learn more on online platforms
about subjects they find appealing or simply conduct further research on what they have
learned at schools. For example, the internet can provide students with information regarding
aspects that are external to their educational curriculum.

Another possible advantage that technological advancements bring to youngsters is it possesses

the capability to improve children’s social skills. Online communities and messaging apps
can enable an avenue for the young to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. As a
result, they can learn more about different cultures and this helps broaden their horizons, as
well as enlarge their social circles to form new friendships.

Nevertheless, some negative consequences may emerge from the breakthroughs of technology
and one of which may be the adverse impact on children’s physicality. Instead of going out,
young generations can spend an extensive amount of time at home with modern entertainment
devices such as game consoles and movie streaming platforms. Repetitive exposure to the
screen will decrease the level of physical exercises and eventually lead to obesity or other
health-related issues.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that the benefits of modern technology, in terms of
providing extensive knowledge and improving children’s social skills, prevail over the
downsides such as posing potential health problems. It is recommended that parents
and educational institutions should encourage minors to also allocate time to energize outside
in their spare time. (302 words)

The line chart depicts the daily temperature range in Brisbane and Canberra, and the bar graph

warmer weather than Canberra each month and their temperatures both rise in the first and last
quarter. Additionally, Brisbane has more rainy days at the beginning and end of the year, while
Canberra has more rainy days in the middle of the year.

29
Regarding temperature, Brisbane’s and Canberra’s highest daily temperatures begin at roughly

Question: An increasing number of people are choosing cosmetic surgery. Why do people
have operations to change the way they look? Do you think this is a positive or negative
development?

ANSWER:

The phenomenon of cosmetic operations has gained traction in today’s society. The possible
causes of this development are mainly personal and I consider this to be a detrimental trend in
society.

Cosmetic modifications allegedly serve two personal reasons. First of all, many people feel
unhappy or self-conscious about their physical features, such as their nose, breasts, or stomach,
and hope that surgery can make them more attractive. By addressing these perceived flaws,
they may also feel more comfortable in social situations and relationships. Moreover, it
contributes to enhancing people’s career prospects. In the era of digital transition, a rising
variety of vocational possibilities, particularly in show business, is providing people with
methods to generate substantial income based primarily on their physical attractiveness. For
instance, an actor with an aesthetically pleasing appearance is more likely to receive a
contract in a blockbuster which can be an uplifting trajectory in their professional career.

However, I believe this trend brings more harm than good. The first problem relates to health
issues. These procedures have the potential to cause discomfort and involve significant risks,
including the possibility of complications such as infections, scarring, nerve impairment,
or even fatalities. One prime example is a renowned Vietnamese plastic surgeon who was
arrested for violating regulations of medical care for causing the death of one of his patients
during a breast augmentation surgery. Furthermore, the emphasis on physical appearance
may create unrealistic beauty standards amongst the general public. This can contribute to
the objectification of a society where individuals who do not fit into these narrow beauty
benchmarks may feel marginalised or stigmatised.

In conclusion, individuals opt for plastic surgery to improve their confidence by looking more
beautiful and to gain more employment opportunities. Nonetheless, this entails many negative
outcomes to society since it can be physically dangerous and lead to a community in
which superficiality outweighs other important personal attributes. (314 words)

school to work and/or travel. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of
this?

ANSWER:

Nowadays, taking a break from their studies to engage in activities such as traveling or working
after graduating from high school is becoming a popular option for students. This essay will
elaborate on the benefits and drawbacks of this trend.

There are several advantages associated with taking a gap year. At first, it assists students to
avoid academic exhaustion and provides time for self-development. Specifically, utilizing this
period to travel provides them the opportunity to gain new experiences that can contribute to
their personal growth. Visiting different countries, for instance, can expose them to diverse
cultures, broadening their horizons and assisting in their development as adaptive and
independent individuals. Additionally, working during a gap year allows students to
accumulate funds for college expenses which can lessen their financial burden upon resuming
their studies.

However, this pattern might also possess various downsides. Mostly, it may impede academic
progress since students may find it challenging when transitioning back to their education life.
Due to the disruption of study momentum, students may struggle to readjust to the structure
and discipline required for academic success. Furthermore, this approach may also lead to a
professional setback. Deferring college enrollment will delay students’ formal education,
therefore postponing their entry to the workforce. For example, if a student plans to become a
doctor and takes a year off after high school, they will likely be a year behind their peers who
went straight into college. This can have an impact on their potential earning and professional
development in the long run.

In conclusion, while having a gap year after graduating high school can offer several benefits
such as self-development and financial stability, it is not without its
detrimental ramifications including loss of study motivation and a deferred professional life.
When considering such a decision, students should carefully weigh its merits and risks, which
vary depending on individual circumstances. (311 words)

Question: The advantages brought by the spread of English as a global language will
outweigh the disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

ANSWER:

In contemporary times, the use of English has been regarded as a standard language in
many contexts. In my opinion, I somewhat agree that the merits of English as a global language
eclipse its demerits.

On the one hand, English has become a universal language in business, education, and
diplomacy. It enables people from different countries to communicate with each other
effectively. This has facilitated global trade and investment, which may boost the world’s
economy. For example, many trade agreements have been written in this language which
has streamlined communication and negotiations between countries and enterprises.
Moreover, English is an academic language. In many fields, research is published and

37
communicated in English. Therefore, being proficient in English is essential for individuals to
remain competitive in their careers.

On the other hand, the spread of English as a lingua franca has certain drawbacks. One
disadvantage is that it may lead to the extinction of other languages. With the increasing use of
English worldwide, some languages are at risk of becoming endangered. This may result in the
loss of cultural diversity and identity. In India, for instance, many parents prioritize English
education over native language education for their children. This has led to a decline in the use
of native languages, such as Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil which may erase an important part of
India’s cultural richness. Another disadvantage is that not everyone has access to quality
English education. This may create an inequality of opportunities and hinder the progress of
individuals and societies.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that the advantages of English as an universal language,
including enhancing the world’s economy and individual’s professional achievements, prevail
over its shortcomings such as the possible eradication of other languages and creating an
unequal society. Therefore, efforts should be made to ensure that everyone has access to quality
English education while also preserving the cultural diversity and variety of other
languages. (329 words)

The line chart illustrates variations in average house prices in Countries A, B and C from 1997
to 2014. Overall, house prices in all the countries experienced an upward trend, with houses in
Country A being the most expensive by the end of the period. Also noticeable is that housing
prices in Country B had a similar pattern to Country C albeit always higher.

Looking initially at Country A, although house prices started the highest at about $140000,
they were overtaken by Country B in 1998, but soon regained the leading status after 2 years.
From 2000, prices soared almost continually, reaching a high point of roughly $625000 in
2014, despite a notable dip from 2002 through to 2006.

Regarding housing prices in Country B and C, both maintained relatively stable growth
throughout. The prices in these countries both began at approximately $125000, but since 1998,
the gap started to widen. Country B rose dramatically, reaching its high of just over $500000
in 2012 while the other country peaked at about $300000 in 2013. Interestingly, both countries
saw a huge drop in 2008 and a marginal decline at the end of the period.

Question: Some people think that the increasing use of computers and mobile phones for
communication has a negative effect on young people’s reading and writing skills. To what
extent do you agree or disagree?

ANSWER:

Technology has become more pervasive in today’s communication. However, it is commonly

felt that this poses a threat to the reading and writing abilities of the young generation. I mostly
disagree with this viewpoint.

Admittedly, relying heavily on smart devices for communication can affect young
people’s literacy. In some countries where pictographic writing is prevalent, youngsters have
to use simplified language on their computer and mobile phone. For example, the young
Chinese generation often use Chinese phonetics on their device; as a result, over a long period,
some may forget Chinese pictograms. However, this issue is not too serious because they still
have to read and write Chinese symbols at school. Therefore, technology is not to blame for
the worsening reading and writing skills of young people.

Hence, the main reason why I disagree is that another factor is more important for its negative
impact on juvenile literacy. With the advent of online streaming services, teenagers often
watch videos when they need to search for something. Doing this can help clarify the matter
easier and save them a great deal of time. However, this can also make them reluctant to read.
This is because reading can contain a lot of plain text and require patience to comprehend the
content; unlike the easier watching options, they can be more appealing but shallow and do not
explain in detail. Therefore, as reading and writing have been closely linked together, watching
videos could impact the young’s reading habits and overall literacy levels.
In conclusion, there is little evidence to associate the excessive use of computers and
smartphones for communication with low literacy among young people, and the other factor
can also be the cause. In my view, I mostly do not agree with this point of view.

The line and pie chart illustrate the planned duration of stay of immigrants to the United
Kingdom from 2000 to 2008, and the purposes for immigration in 2008, respectively. Overall,
while the number of individuals who anticipated to remain in the UK for 2 to 4 years and at
most 2 years increased, that of people who planned to stay for 4 years or over remained stable

44
for the given period. Additionally, most immigrants moved to the UK for professional
purposes.

Regarding the length of stay, the number of immigrants who expected to stay in the UK for a
maximum of 2 years ascended significantly from 150,000 in 2000 to approximately 250,000
by 2008, whereas that of those who planned to remain for 4 or more years stabilized at 150,000
throughout the period. The figure for those with a 2-to-4 year intention was the lowest at 50,000
in 2000, after which it witnessed small fluctuations around this level until 2006, then surged to
roughly 250,000 by 2008.

As for migration purposes, over one-third of the immigrants traveled to the UK for
employment, which was the most common reason. This was followed by education at 32% and
family reunion at 16%. The proportion of people who provided other objectives and did not
specify a reason shared an identical percentage point of 7%.

Question: Some cities have vehicle-free days when private cars, trucks, and motorcycles are
banned from the city center. People are encouraged to use public transportation such as
buses, taxis, and the metro on vehicle-free days. Do the advantages outweigh the
disadvantages?

ANSWER:

In various metropolitan areas, residents are advised to utilize public transports on vehicle-
restriction days, when the use of citizen-owned automobiles is prohibited in the central area.
In my opinion, this regulation contributes more remarkable benefits than the possible drawback
it may pose.

The main advantage is that this method enhances the air quality for residents. Private vehicles
are a significant source of carbon emissions, which can have a negative impact on public health.
As a result, reducing the number of cars on the road lessens the level of air pollution, ultimately
providing a cleaner environment and promoting better health outcomes.
Furthermore, limiting private vehicles can also help establish a safer environment for citizens.
It can be assumed that fewer automobiles traveling on the roads leads to a reduced possibility
of traffic accidents. To illustrate, with the expectation of a less lower appearance of motorized
vehicles on the streets, pedestrians and cyclists can mobilize more freely and experience a
lower risk of injury from collisions with cars.

However, this practice is not without its demerits, one of which is the inconvenience
in mobility for citizens. Commuters may have to experience increased travel time to reach
their desired destinations because public transport modes are required to stop at stations along
the route. For example, according to its specified coverage, a bus must make numerous stops
before transporting them to their university. This may cause punctuality issues for passengers.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that the advantages of vehicle-free days in improving
environmental conditions and providing safer streets prevail over the downsides including
traveling challenges for residents. To reduce the travel time of public transport for citizens, the
authorities should design more direct routes for the convenience of passengers.

The pictures depict the alterations of the ground level of a specific building from 1958 to the

present day. Overall, the place has been repurposed twice, from an office to residential
accommodation and later to a florist. Additionally, the rooms were also rearranged to
accommodate the objective of each transformation.

The first reformation converted the office which had operated from 1958 to 1984, to an
apartment, which was first occupied the following year. The conference room and the
assistant’s office in the top left area was removed to build a spacious living room. Similarly, a
bathroom with a shower was constructed beneath the new living room at the expense of the
secretary’s office and the toilet, with a small gap between the two new rooms. The manager’s
office and the reception area in the bottom right corner were transformed to two adjacent
bedrooms, whereas the kitchen in the top right and the entrance in the centre of the lower wall
remained intact.

The second repurposing occurred between 2000 and 2001, transforming the flat into a florist
which has functioned until present. The living room and the bathroom’s size were reduced and
converted into a gift card section and a playing area, respectively, and flowers have been
displayed in the space between these rooms. While the bedroom in the center right was turned
into an office, the second bedroom below it was eliminated for an additional flower showcase.
Finally, the kitchen and entryway experienced no changes.

Question: Many people no longer read newspapers or watch TV news programmes. Instead
they get news about the world from the Internet.
Is this a negative or positive development?

ANSWER:

The internet has paved new ways for accessing information regarding worldwide events, which
is how many people nowadays choose to be updated with news instead of via traditional
newspapers or television. From my perspective, this is an overall positive development to
society.

The foremost benefit is that the internet offers an interactive platform for information
exchange. Internet users can interact with the news they are acquiring, for instance, comment
on articles and even engage in debates with those with other stands. This provides people a
diverse range of perspectives and helps maintain a well-informed and critical citizenry.
Another positive influence is that news acquisition from internet-based platforms is often
faster. This is because online news confers the ability of real-time coverage which allows
followers to remain current with the most updated events as they happen. For example,
this immediacy is often extremely valuable during the reporting of natural disasters, such as
the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria, when timely information is critical to public safety.

However, one pronounced concern is the proliferation of fake news and misinformation on
the internet. The rise of social media and other online platforms has facilitated
the dissemination of fake news, as the vast majority of information circulating on the internet
is not verified by the authorities. Given the sheer number of news outlets available, it can be
challenging for individuals to distinguish fact from fiction, leading to several news subscribers
being misinformed on important matters.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that despite the possibility of misinformation for
viewers, obtaining news from the internet rather than from newspapers and television is an
overall beneficial development because it encourages critical thinking as well as facilitates
faster information for citizens. (286 words)

Additionally, firefighters have the highest average working hours.

Regarding earnings, underground drivers generate the highest starting income among all given
jobs at nearly 50,000 pounds, which is moderately greater than that of firefighters at just over
40,000. Salaries for nurses and police start at significantly lower levels at approximately 23,000
and roughly 17,000 respectively. After a three-year period of working, wages for workers in
all selected professions increase by around 2,000.

Concerning average working hours, firefighters rank first at 55 hours a week, followed by law
enforcement officers and nurses with comparable figures at approximately 40 hours. Despite
earning the highest income, underground drivers allocate the lowest time per week for work at
only 36 hours.

Question: Some people believe teenagers should focus on all subjects equally, whereas other
people think that they should concentrate on only those subjects that they find interesting.
Discuss both the views and provide your opinion.

ANSWER:

The topic of whether adolescent students should dedicate attention to courses that attract them,
or allocate a balanced effort into every subject, has sparked controversy. This essay
will elaborate both viewpoints and provide the reasons for my advocacy for the latter.
Proponents of the sole commitment to preferred subjects assert that this strategy assists in
acquiring deep knowledge and wellbeing for teenagers. To begin with, it helps students
accelerate in excelling in their chosen field. By allocating extensive time and effort on favored
subjects, teenagers can grasp a more comprehensive understanding. This provides them a
firmer foundation of expertise compared to their peers in future professional endeavors.
Additionally, without the necessity of full attention to all courses, pupils can distribute more
time for leisure activities, which can positively impact their mental and physical health. For
instance, those who adopt this approach are required to only perform adequately in the
remaining subjects, allowing them to invest more time for sports or other hobbies.

Nonetheless, others believe that providing effort equally to all subjects can optimize
youngsters’ career prospects as well as personal growth. Specifically, this practice broadens
the range of prospective opportunities available to students. This is because distributing focus
on all subjects assists them with fundamental understanding of different domains.
Consequently, in their future professional life, they have the capabilities to apply for different
lines of work that they had not previously considered. Furthermore, similar distribution across
all subjects equips juveniles with various life skills. To illustrate, math facilitates critical
thinking ability, while literature improves communication skills.

In conclusion, while the concentration on only interested subjects provides positive effects
including in-depth knowledge towards the matter and enhanced health, I would argue that
distributing focus evenly between all courses provides greater benefits since it helps students
become more versatile in their career lives and facilitates the development of diverse skills.

The line graph shows variations in the production of timber, pulp and paper in a nation in
Europe over a 20-year period from 1980. Overall, despite fluctuations, the production of all
three products increased with paper dominating towards the end of the period, while timber
was produced the least for most of the final decade.

Regarding paper and pulp production, these products experienced a broadly similar trend. Pulp
rose from first place initially at about 5 million tonnes and remained higher until 1995, when
it was overtaken by paper. Although it slightly fell, by 2000, pulp manufacturing had finished
in second place at nearly 10 million tonnes. Papermaking almost exactly mirrored the rising
trend of pulp, starting lowest at 4 million and increasing to a high of approximately 11 million
tonnes in 2000, the highest figure in the graph.

In terms of timber production, the figure surged from around four and a half million tonnes to
its highest point of 10 million tonnes in 1985 but since then, it started to decrease marginally.
By around 1996, this product had dropped to just over 6 million tonnes. Despite having a slight
recovery to 8 million tonnes about 3 years later, timber fell to approximately 7 million tonnes
in 2000.

Question: The responsibility of schools is to teach children good behaviors in addition to

providing formal education. Agree or disagree?

ANSWER:
The responsibility of rearing a child is always an arduous task, regardless of whom it
is bestowed on. Some opine that schools are liable to instill good values and virtues into
children along with academic knowledge. I partly agree with this view as I believe that this
duty should not fall solely on educators, but family as well.

On the one hand, educational institutions are an ideal place for children to learn
about ethics and social norms as well as how to practice them since schools are the reflection
of real society. At schools, children are exposed to an organizational discipline unable to
be reproduced at home where teachers are the coach, the guide, and the companion. This
enables them to garner trust and respect from children, resulting in their impact on pupils’
mindsets and behaviors. Moreover, educational establishments are where youngsters can
interact with their peers, which makes a perfect environment for them to understand
and sympathize with people of varying backgrounds. Hence, with the instructors’ guidance
and friends’ interaction, juveniles are able to develop the right attitude with an open-minded
viewpoint at schools.

On the other hand, the formation of personality and the ethics framework of children starts at
home. Family is the first and the most crucial stage of socialization, the process where a
youngster learns to adapt and become a member of society by acquiring the expected moral
values and acting accordingly. Parents are children’s first teachers, leaving life-long influences
on them even when they have fully grown. As much as outside interactions affect children’s
worldviews, they become insignificant compared to the parents’ thoughts and behaviors. This
is because offspring usually imitate their parents, both consciously and subconsciously, as
parental figures are oftentimes the role models. There are many cases of juvenile criminals
where family negligence is the main cause, showing the importance of family in the
development of children.

In conclusion, I somewhat agree that educational institutions should incorporate ethics

education into their curriculum to enable adolescents to develop holistically. However, the
responsibility should be shared by the family as it is the most influential environment for any
child’s development.

The line chart compares the average number of tourists entering at different times, between
the summer and winter seasons in 2003, to a specific museum in the United Kingdom.
Overall, the museum experienced higher visitor traffic in summer than winter. Additionally,
for both summer and winter, the largest number of visitors arrived in the morning.

Regarding the winter, the museum welcomed no tourists before midnight, after which the
number of guests rose significantly to an average of 600 people by around 10:45 AM, which
was the highest point. Subsequently, it experienced a period of mild fluctuation around this
level until nearly midday, before plunging continuously and as of approximately 2:30 PM
onwards, the museum welcomed no visitors.

During the summer, the number of tourists began at the same point as that of the winter, then
ascended considerably to a peak of roughly 1,500 visitors at around 11:30, which was more
than double the highest figure for the winter. This was followed by a sudden drop to about

Question: Some people feel that manufacturers and supermarkets have the responsibility to
reduce the amount of packaging of goods. Others argue that customers should avoid
buying goods with a lot of packaging. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

ANSWER:
Many believe that manufacturers and retailers have accountability for minimizing the
quantity of packing used for their products, while others contend that consumers ought
to refrain from purchasing items with excessive packaging. This essay will discuss both
notions in detail and provide my own perspective.

Proponents of the first viewpoint argue that producers and supermarkets have the ability to
produce positive changes on a larger scale. Initially, the level of disposed packaging depends
primarily and firstly on goods manufacturers. An immediate reduction of packaging at the
production phase lowers the amount of waste to a large extent, as well as eliminates any
necessary actions from the subsequent chains. Additionally, retailers can contribute
significantly to the mitigation of negative environmental impacts by processing the excessive
packaging. This is because they are the medium to distribute the packages between
manufacturers and consumers. For example, supermarkets can remove unnecessary
packaging and perform recycling operations, before selling the products to consumers.

Nevertheless, there are others who argue that customers should refuse goods with heavy
packaging because they have an influence on both fellow buyers and sellers. On a customer
level, by avoiding these products, they can spread awareness to other consumers by teaching
them about the negative impacts that these packages may have on the environment. It can
create a domino effect of conscious consumer behavior, where more or them become aware
of the impact of their choices on the environment, as well as lead to a greater demand for
sustainable packaging solutions and more responsible consumption habits. On a business
scale, if consumers avoid products with excessive packaging, manufacturers and
supermarkets will have a financial incentive to reduce packaging in order to meet consumer
demand.

In conclusion, both sides have their own merits. On balance, I believe the responsibility
belongs to all parties in the logistics chain. This is because producers and retailers can reduce
and process the wasted materials before they are released into the environment, whereas
consumers have the capability to spread environmental awareness and financial pressure on
manufacturers.

The diagrams show the layouts of a theatre in 2010 and 2012. Overall, by 2012, it had been
made significantly larger by adding new facilities and relocating some existing ones, while the
main auditorium remained intact.

In 2010, the structure had two adjacent offices for admin and ticket sales and a cafe all located
on either side of the main door at the centre of the lower wall. Inside the auditorium, there were
two doors for entry, and one door for exit on the left next to the front-row seats. The main stage
was about the same size as the dressing room behind it and a storage room was at the left rear
of the theatre.

Over the next two years, the main door and auditorium with its entry doors remained
untouched, while the exit one was lost. However, the lobby was widened, making room for a
new restaurant. This means the admin office was moved a little up to the left in an addition,
and the ticket counter replaced the old cafe on the right of the main door. Notably, although
the stage was enlarged by almost double, the dressing room and storage were downsized and
moved around slightly. The dressing room and new showers were located on the left in an
extension, while the storage was on the right, all connected by a new long corridor at the back.

Question: Many companies sponsor sports as a way to advertise themselves. Some people
think this is good for the world of sports, while others think there are disadvantages of this.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion?

ANSWER:

Over the past few decades, the general public have witnessed a surge in the sponsorship made
by certain enterprises to the sport industry. While opponents of this trend claim that it might
exert many negative effects; nonetheless, I believe that funding sporting events is amongst the
most effective public relations strategies.

On the one hand, reputable brands contribute a significant amount of money to sports stars
which might have detrimental impacts on athletes’ performance. The reason behind this is that
as the number of advertising agreements increases, athletes may prioritise attending
promotional events over their training. Consequently, this will lead to a deterioration in their
performance on the field. Moreover, by aligning themselves with a particular brand, athletes
are essentially taking the risk of potentially compromising their own reputation. If the brand
has a negative reputation, for instance, if it is known for causing environmental damage
or exploiting child labour, this negative image could be transferred to the athlete.

On the other hand, multinationals sponsor sports will help them promote their
company labels to the public. This is because major sporting events are watched by billions of
audiences. Thus, an association with sports competitions or organisation such as World Cup
Football or FIFA, a business might increase its brand value, sales volume and revenue.
Furthermore, advertising contracts can be a significant source of income for athletes, as
some promotional deals are worth millions of dollars.

In conclusion, commercial sponsorship is an inevitable phenomenon in the world of sport.

Although it might have adverse effects on players’ performance and reputation in some cases,
I am of the opinion that brand advertisements will bring society more benefits in terms of a
more profitable income for athletes and a growth in the companies’ revenue.
