ments, examinations and/or any other forms of assessment.

NB: Show your all calculations and state any theorems used. You must complete all questions. Only
selected questions will be marked.

1. Let P be the plane through p = h0, 0, 1i, q = h2, −1, 0i and r = h1, 0, 1i and Q be the plane
through x = p + q, y = h2, 0, 1i and z = h2, 1, 0i.
(a) Write down a Cartesian equation of the plane P .
(b) Write down a Cartesian equation of the plane Q.
(c) Show that P and Q intersect and find all the points of intersection.
[1,1,3]

2. Let L1 be the line through ā = h1, 1, λ2 −1i and b̄ = h3, 3, 0i, L2 be the line through c̄ = h4, −4, 0i
and d¯ = hµ2 , −16, 0i and L3 be the line through ē = h0, 1, 2i and f¯ = h0, −3, −6i.
(a) Write down a vector equation for each of the lines L1 , L2 and L3 using three different
parameters.
(b) Find all possible values of λ and µ so that all the three lines intersect at a unique point.
[1,3]

3. (a) Find all values of m so that the angle between the vector x̄ = h1, 1, mi and the vector
ȳ = h1, −1, mi is π3 .
(b) Find all values of p such that the vector hp3 , 3, 5i parallel to the line L = {h3 − 24t, 5 + 9t, 7 +
15ti | t ∈ R}.
(c) Find all values of s such that the vector h1, 5, 2s − 6i is perpendicular to the plane P =
{hx, y, zi ∈ R3 | x + 5y + z = 10}.
(d) Prove that if ā, b̄ ∈ R3 are not scalar multiples of each other then 0̄, ā, b̄ and ā + b̄ are on
the same plane.
