SURGERY

Coronary artery bypass surgery

Coronary artery bypass surgery is done to restore blood flow around a blocked
heart artery. The surgery may be done as an emergency treatment for a heart
attack, if other immediate treatments aren't working.

Risks
Coronary artery bypass surgery is open-heart surgery. All surgeries have some risks.
Possible complications of coronary artery bypass surgery include:
1. Bleeding.
2. Death.
3. Heart attack due to a blood clot after surgery.
4. Infection at the site of the chest wound.
5. Long-term need for a breathing machine.
6. Irregular heart rhythms, called arrhythmias.
7. Kidney problems.
8. Memory loss or trouble thinking clearly, which often is temporary.

NOTE: The risk of complications is higher if the surgery is done as an emergency procedure.
PREVENTION
● Eat a healthy, balanced diet
A low-fat, high-fiber diet is recommended, which should include plenty of fresh
fruit and vegetables and whole grains.

● Be more physically active

Combining a healthy diet with regular exercise is the best way of maintaining a
healthy weight. Having a healthy weight reduces your chances of developing high
blood pressure.

Regular exercise will make your heart and blood circulatory system more efficient,
lower your cholesterol level, and also keep your blood pressure at a healthy level.
Exercising regularly reduces your risk of having a heart attack.
● Give up smoking
Smoking is a major risk factor for developing atherosclerosis (furring of the
arteries).

● Reduce your alcohol consumption

If you drink, do not exceed the maximum recommended limits.
Men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a
week.
Always avoid binge drinking, as this increases the risk of a heart attack.

● Keep your blood pressure under control

● Keep your diabetes under control
