Homework 5: due on Wednesday (Oct 11, 2023) before class. Submit through Blackboard

1. A mixture of 40% sucrose (table sugar) in water at 60 °F is flowing through a 1-inch

Schedule 40 pipe. The mixture has a viscosity of 7.2 cP and a specific gravity (SG) = 1.3.

a. What is the maximum allowable velocity for the system to be in laminar flow?
b. Under the conditions of part a, what is the pressure drop in psi for 100 ft of pipe?
c. Suppose that instead of a 1-inch Schedule 40 pipe, the sugar/water mixture flows in the
annulus formed between a 3-inch Schedule 40 pipe and a 2-inch Schedule 40 pipe.
Repeat parts a and b for flow through the annulus.

2. A device for chemical analysis of small amount of aqueous solution has channels 100 𝜇m
wide and 10 𝜇m deep. With a solution viscosity of 1.3 cP and a density of 1050 kg/m 3, what
are the Reynolds number and pressure drop per unit length if the average velocity is 0.1 m/s?
Express the pressure drop in Pa/m.

3. Water at 70 °F is flowing through a 2-inch Schedule 40 galvanized iron straight pipe. The
psi
maximum allowable pressure drop in the system is 5 . What is the maximum
100 ft of pipe
allowable flow rate in gpm (gallons per minute) through the piping system?
