Homework 8: due on Friday (Nov 10, 2023) before class. Submit through Blackboard
1. Air at velocity of 120 m/s enters a 25.4-mm constant diameter steel pipe at 350 K and 5 x 10 5
N/m2. Assuming flow is adiabatic, for what length of pipe would the air leave at sonic
velocity?

2. Air at 25 °C enters a section of 2-inch Schedule 40 steel pipe at a pressure of 411 kPa and a
flow rate of 1,200 kg/hr. Assuming isothermal flow, what is the pressure drop in 60 m of
pipe?

3. Natural gas consisting essentially of methane (MW = 16 lb/lbmol) is to be transported

through a 24-inch inside diameter steel pipeline over flat terrain. Each pumping (compressor)
station increases the pressure to 100 psia, and the pressure drops to 25 psia at the inlet of the
next pumping (compressor) station, which is 50 miles away. Assuming isothermal flow, what
is the natural gas flow rate in cubic feet per hour measured at 60 °F and 14.7 psia?
